I personally use the NETGEAR WNDR3700 which I bought for around $130 at Centre Com a week or so ago. It is pretty good, lots of settings and features and can broadcast at 5ghz so it is fast. The "Ready Share" feature allows you to connect a USB hard drive or flash memory so you can share media around your home network or via the internet with HTTP/FTP, good for 1080p video streaming. Problems is that I couldn't get it to work with the Seagate 3tb hard drive (Most hard drives do work) nor can it share USB printers (network printers are ok though).

Mind you these are pretty much run-out models, and will be replaced soon. But it does what a dual-band router should do, not bad if you need a wireless N router.

  • Eh, AFAIK you usually get those free with the netgear modems anyway.
I got them when I got the modems free with the internet plans.

LOL "Valued at up to $119"?
I must be too tired, I don't get this.
    Aren't they worth like $5?

    • Nah more like $9 lol

      • +2

so where can u get a dual band n stick for 9 bucks?

        • it was a joke. noticed the "lol"?

  • Bear in mind the WNDR3700 comes in 2 versions - V1 is the old version (which I have) and V2 is the newer version (V2 came out about a year ago).

A lot of shops with low turnover are still stocking the V1 model. I don't know the exact differences but I know the firmware is different for the 2 - get the V2 if you can…

    • I believe the white/blue box is the v1 and the red box is the v2.

    • V1 is supposed to be better than V2

  • Issue 1

This router runs on the AR7161 chip, using the madwifi driver. This driver has known issues that are difficult to troubleshoot, and lead to the router to stop broadcasting SSID after random intervals, depending on client wireless card hardware. There are many ways to resolve this temporarily, but as long as you are using the same cards/hardware the problem will return. Ways of fixing it temporarily include a hard reboot, hitting 'apply settings' on the wireless page, or ifconfig down / ifconfig up the appropriate interface (in this case ath0).

Here is a link to the madwifi project page with some information about the issue: http://madwifi-project.org/wiki/StuckBeacon

  • You can get a nano Asus USB wireless N for $14. These stick out and break easy, no deal here

    • Sigh, people can't seem to tell the difference between a dual band stick and a single 2.4GHz band stick. The extra 5Ghz does make a difference if you live in a congested 2.4GHz area.

  • +1

These do retail at $119 as they are the dual band ones. You can pick it up from MSY for $60.

If any one is aware of Dual Band 300m stick for $5, $9 or even $14 please let me know where.

  • On the centre com website these are $187($145 form msy/cpl). How did you pick it up for ~$130?

    • Centre Com has a new catalogue out that ends the sale on the router.

  • Yeah, I wouldn't use a USB wireless card to try to reach 300Mb but here is an alternative:

  • i was reading this a couple of days ago, but i didnt post it up.. =)
i helped my uncle buy the WNDR3700 for 153 at harvey norman, price matched with the cheapest on staticice at the time. =)
he has a wireless N300 i believe, which did not reach to his lounge room
but the 5G has full connection in the lounge =), the router omits both 2.4g and 5g signals at once =)
so u can use either one at any one time =)

    • "the router omits both 2.4g and 5g signals at once"

hopefully it EMITS both at once, lol

      • lol..thats why i chose engineering instead of journalism lol
