Recommended NBN router for TPG

Hi,

Have been connected with TPG NBN for about 2 years now. Have always used their supplied router - TP Link Archer VR1600v.

Lately connection have felt a little unstable at times, either slow ping, drop outs etc that require a restart. When I restart I restart both the tp link router and the nbn modem. Signal is also a bit weak, the house is decent size and I often only get 1 bar on the 5G band.

Regardless of whether it is the line connection or street connection, any recommendation on what better model routers I can get instead for TPG NBN?

Thanks!

  • I bought an unused Telstra router from gumtree for $20. Try that one if TPG NBN is same as Telstra.

The Telstra Home Gateway router I have doesn't allow you to set the VLAN ID on the WAN port which is required for TPG's HFC and FTTC setups.

I had issues with iinet worth a dlink modem. It worked great for 12 months, but after being restarted, it wouldn't connect. I exchanged it for a new one, and had the same issue.
After 3 calls, it ripened it to be a setting worth the vlan id.

      • FYI the Technicolor routers do support VLAN ID. Hack the firmware and install Ansuel/tch-nginx-gui for easy set up.

depends on your budget, a bridge modem like a Draytek DV130 or Netgear DM200 with a Mesh system like Ubiquiti Amplifi or TP Link Deco. Will get you full signal around the house. plus has a cool app for managing the internet to your connected devices.

  • Well this is OzBargain. How much do you wanna spend? :-)

  • Budget is up to $250 thanks!

  • What type of NBN?

    • I think it is HFC, there is a modem/box where the cable from the wall connects to with another lan port on it that connects to the TP Link Archer VR1600v.

      • Have you tried updating the firmware on the VR600V modem? I personally like TP-Link and always had good results and performance.
You can check your NBN type at www.nbncheck.com.au.

  • The Netgear Nighthawk R6400 or R7000 routers are great, however they won't work out of the box. You will have to upgrade the firmware to DD-WRT as the stock firmware won't allow you to set the VLAN ID on the WAN port which TPG needs. DD-WRT gives you plenty of other niceties so it's worth the upgrade.

    • You can on the R7000, but it's tricky to work out where to find the setting.
