Aussie Broadband and Internet Lag Issues

Hi all, I'm having lag issues withy internet and wondered if someone could offer advice. Been with ABB for a couple of years now. Family of 6,everyone on their phones, 3 boys gaming, Netflix's etc. We're on FTTN 50/20 plan and my son calls ABB 1-2 times a month (even before lockdown) due to lagging issues, even when there's only 2 of us on. I don't get involved in the calls as I have no clue when it comes to IT.
Our modem is a couple of years old, not sure if updating would help and then what do I buy? Or should I pay an IT person to check things out? Speed test history is all over the place (I took a screenshot but don't know how to upload).
Any help will be greatly appreciated, happy to provide further info if needed.
TIA

Is speed a recent issue with everyone home. Its probably your bandwidth with everyone on at same time. Try doing some internet sharing schedule.

ABB CS is helpful. Give them a call.

Lots of variables/possibilities, hard to isolate/identify without being there… Does it still lag if you use a wired connection?

Perhaps leave it to your son then? Sounds like medium to heavy usage? Try going up a speed for one month to see if that helps?

Call an electrician or an antenna installer. Ask them to cut all phone extensions in your house, and run a single Cat6 ethernet cable from the phone cable entry to the phone port where you currently plug in your modem. It'll take about 20 minutes (assuming you don't have weird access arrangements), and cost about $150. You should see a marked improvement in your speeds.

Use a wifi diagnostic tool to make sure you don't have any PCs sitting in dead spots. Consider running Cat6 into those rooms. The electrician can do it while they're cutting cables.

    • Thanks for your reply.
So if I run cable, should I just run it to all rooms (while he's doing it anyway) ?

    There's your issue

      Not always.

I'm sitting here quite happy at ~87 down and ~40 up on FTTN.

        Op isn't though.

Doesn't mean that FTTN is their issue. Could be a crappy modem, crappy setup, congestion downstream (i.e. congestion that'd be there regardless of FTTN or FTTP) - you can't just say that FTTN is the issue. You don't even know what their speed or latency is, you only know what plan speed they're paying for.

          • @MynyMouqe: Their issue is likely in the copper, whether on the nbns side, or in their house. This wouldn't be an issue with fttp, therefore it's a fttn issue.

  • I'd not jump to wiring issues yet… that's the old Whirlpool response, and often it was found the wiring was fine but the modem etc was rubbish.

You need to define a couple of things first:

    • what are you calling "lag" - is it in internet gaming, connection to Netflix, pages opening slowly etc - because this could all point to different things
    • does it happen all of the time, or only at peak times (i.e. are you affected by the ~7PM Netflix logon where the a backhaul may be getting saturated
    • what sort of modem do you have, how old is it?
    • what has Aussie said in relation to this? What have their line tests shown?
  • Hi,
Lag mainly in gaming but also slow to play a video on facebook, kicks me out of MYOB online at times and yes occasionally Netflix.
Can happen anytime of day, even when there's only 2 of us accessing it.
Modem is about 3 years old. It's a Netcomm Wireless VDSL/ADSL AC 1600 modem router NF8AC ? bought from ABB
ABB just reset/reboot. Have called many times and only once have we been told to update modem.
I have a screenshot of recent tests but don't know how to upload it ? Can you explain how?
    Thanks for your response

Speed test done just now with only me using the internet

    • Ping is great. Your download is slow if you're on 50, but your upload is ok.

    • Other channel?

      • Hahaha that's what I call it.
We have 2 different Wi-Fis on our network?

        • Oh right, yeah you probably have 2.4 GHz and 5GHz

They both look OK (to me).

  • There shouldn't be that much difference between your 2.4ghz and 5ghz. Is the modem in a central spot in the house? Which one is showing up quicker?

    • Yes it is in a central location. The 2.4 is showing up quicker
