Laptop for AutoCAD under $1k

Hi Guys,

I am looking for a laptop that can run autocad, 3d modelling software like sketchup that under 1k budget? i was looking around and find out the HP zbook 14 g2 and HP zbook 15u g2 workstation but not sure if it can handle autocad and 3d modelling software?

Also found this HP Gaming Pavilion – 15-cx0154tx refurbish that cost under 1k as well

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

I reckon get one of those Asus TUF laptops with the Ryzen 5 and a GTX1650, can get them when eBay do 20% off sales for around $950. Otherwise you can get the 1050 ones for about $1000 normally. Personally I'd wait to get the 20% off and score a 1650!

Are you sure you need a laptop? Desktop can be had for much less with much better specs.

    • I wouldn't got for a Ryzen with AutoCAD. CAD is heavily influenced by single core performance, and Ryzen tends to fail there.

      • -1

Why's that? Aren't the new Ryzens pretty competitive? I have a R5 1500AF and I've got no issues in Fusion360

        • I've got a Ryzen 3800X on my home PC, so I'm not coming from a point of bias. The Ryzen line does not compete well in single threaded applications.

If it's your personal PC for a bit of CAD here and there sure.. but if I was building a bunch of CAD machines for work I would not dream of putting a Ryzen processor in them.

  • 3d modelling software like sketchup

Why Sketchup? If you're going to run ACAD then you might as well go Fusion 360.

(Unless you're building a house, then carry on.)

As far as specs, Fusion 360 will run practically anything.

    • To add to that, Sketchup will run on even less than Fusion. I was using it for 3D modelling before switching to Fusion. Also D C is correct! If you aren't doing it for architecture work, bite the bullet and Learn Fusion! You won't regret it. SO much time savings when you're designing things!

  • Whatever laptop you get, make sure it's got a dedicated GPU. Autocad is GPU heavy even for basic drafting.

The suggested ASUS w/ GTX1650 should do.

Next thing is screen size as trying to model on a 14" is quite tiring after some time.

    • AutoCAD is not GPU heavy- unless you're doing solids/rendering etc which is often better done in another program. For AutoCAD in order of priority you want: 1) single core processing performance 2) enough RAM 3) a dedicated GPU of any sort that is fairly recent (last couple of years)

      • i think i might need basic work done in autocad.

  • Does it have to be a laptop?

    • yes, i already has a standard desktop for daily use so i need a laptop to carry to client's site

      • Invariably then you only really need it to run AutoCAD viewer, do all the heavy lifting on the desktop? I've worked in the building and architecture industry for a long time and the only laptops I would even consider are mobile workstations at least 4 plus times your budget, but that's just what I find fit for purpose.

  • Something on sale with the best GPU you can afford.
10 series Nvidea are fine, not far behind 20 series.
