Recommendations for an A4 Document Scanner or MFP with Good Scanning

I need to scan 60 to 80 page documents weekly for a home business.
They are single sided A4.

I'd prefer not to spend a lot, but also want to avoid poor quality paper handling with lots of misfeeds etc.
We have a colour laser printer, so printing features are not a consideration.
Any recommendations?

    • Which of the results do you recommend?

      • Any in that table that pops up that says "the best MFP of 2020. I reckon if you read the table/article you'd have the answers. It's the first link on the results. It is amazing how easy and good Google is to use.

    • imagine if we had to google for our own bargains too?

      • I know right? If Google is good for one thing, it is review of tech items and "best of" tech item lists.

I got a brother MFC-L2750DW for home office set-up a few months ago after bit of research. The two sided auto scan has come in handy. I searched for cheapest competitor that officeworks would match and got it for $250, might be a bit overkill for your situation given you don't need printing though.

    • ^^^^^ Get this one…. The MFC-L2750DW does double sided scanning and its handy as!

Scans fine, you can setup a heap of shortcuts using the web interface for near one touch scanning, mine scans to my NAS, you can scan and send via email from te unit etc.

Printing is good, also duplex printing.

Only con is it comes with a starter toner cartridge (like they all do), so after about ~400-500 pages and you have buy a new toner cartridge.

      • Came here to say the same thing. +1 for the Brother range of MFC. I love the duplex scanning and use it all the time to scan in older service manuals and the like. And the duplex printing is good feature as well.

Also, it’s got a shorter toner from new, but even so, it still prints heaps of pages and is so much more economical than an inkjet. I think my last toner cartridge was a “long life” cartridge and it still only cost something like $36 delivered.

Another thin I like about this is that all the copies and paper loading is done from the front. You don’t need any room either side of it to load paper or documents in the side of it…

        • Another thin I like about this is that all the copies and paper loading is done from the front

Oh yes that too. Its a full size paper tray, none of that crappy paper half hanging out the front.

Like everyone else here it seems, I priced matched mine @ Officeworks, it was $250-260 from memory.

        • Can you recommend a generic cartridge?

I've ordered some previously from eBay and quality wasn't good… i.e. lines.

          • @JimB: I don’t really know. I have just bought mine from eBay. I have mine, my parents, my friends and the printer were I volunteer all they all take the same cartridge and I have only ever bought them from various eBay sellers and never had any issues with them.

If you’re always getting streaks or lines, it may need to be cleaned or something else may be the issue.

            • @pegaxs: lucky you.

It's a new printer and worked perfectly with the original printer.

Not much you can clean.. I guess I'll run the gauntlet again on my new printer.

    • I just ordered this one last week. How did u get Officeworks to match to $250 ?

      • Go in store and ask them to price match (beat) from another store, i.e. https://www.umart.com.au/Brother-MFC-L2750DW-Laser-Multifunc…

I got them to price match another store that was selling it for $250 at the time, so paid like $237 at Officeworks.

I generally prefer to buy at the original store, but it was interstate, so went to Officeworks.

      Duplex colour scanning is handy.

      Cheaper than a dedicated scanner.

  • I use HP DJ 2130 MFP (no auto feeding) which I got for $15 from a previous OZbargain deal for general home use if that helps.

We've been using the Fujitsu scanners (1300 series) with great success. Maybe this model maybe suitable at 12 pages per minute (scans both sides, just load the pages and it auto feed through) https://www.fujitsu.com/au/products/computing/peripheral/sca…

    • Have one for the office..

Quick, nice quality and is very compact.

    • I loved my S300 until they decided not to support Windows 10.

If you are after a heavy duty scanner then don't even bother about SOHO MFCs as the scanner unit is not made for continues heavy use. They will do a decent job for an occasional scan but will start developing issues over time and on most cases the feeder units will fail or start having quirks resulting in misaligned pages, etc.

Get a dedicated document scanner as these are purpose built for the job and would make your life a whole lot easier. I've had a client who had multiple accountants working there and all of them had canon document scanners sitting on their desks and the scanners were in use all day as it was as a requirement for the nature of business they were in.

If you don't have the budget to get a floor standing office copier then these are the next best thing. Look at cannon dr-c225 or dr-c225w as these are the ones I've had experience with. Similar products from other brands have to be equally good too.

If $500+ is not an issue for you, Fujitsu IX500 I think is the best scanner - I use it almost everyday for the last 5 years. There should be newer model out there though. It cannot do glass scanning however. It can handle multiple pages A4 and anything smaller than that including receipts easily. Rarely jammed. It has option to either producing single pdfs or multiple pages in one pdf. I use the wired option even wireless is possible.

I have had the Canon DR-C225W for ages (6 yrs+) now and scan about what you do. It was a solid choice at the time and cost about $400, but I couldnt comment on current equipment. Epson Workforce series is what we have in the office, and it is a pretty decent unit (albiet a lot more expensive!).

  • My old Dell V313W from 9 years ago is dying and I am only using it for scanning documents these days. I am only doing ~50 A4 pages a month. Looking for cheap & durable solution (that will hopefully last another 5+ years). My wife said she saw Canon MG3060 selling for $29.95 at Aldi. Would that be a good substitute? Or should I look for something on FB Marketplace / Gumtree?
