Question about Processing Insurance for Auspost Parcel Lost

**** 27/04 Update ****
YEAH!!!! good news they decided to process my claim!
I requested someone from the claims department call me and someone finally did. She was really helpful. Firstly, she explained that she is aware of the situation and this is from ebay and my claim isnt being fobbed off. They just need to have appropriate doc to go through the process. I still had try to provide some sort of manifest with my address, receivers address and the tracking#

eventually there was a screen print from ebay that has that and they were happy.
They will compensate me for the amount insured plus postage.

Lesson learnt:
Try to get the parcel scanned over the counter. try to keep a pdf of the postage label.
Keep trying to be polite to the people you speak to.

Background:
I sold something on ebay and the parcel was not delivered. 3 weeks later Auspost decided that the parcel was lost and are going to process my insurance that i purchased when i send the parcel.

They wannt me to provide my original proof of purchase when for the item. Not what the buyer paid for on Ebay. I started sweating as I bought the item quite some time ago and the I dont know if I have the original proof of purchase. It was my lucky days as it was on my old laptop that I was clearing the hdd. Emailed Auspost and I am waiting.

The item was sold noebay for 699 and insured for $699 at a cost of $15

Question/Discussion
It doe not make sense that I have to provide proof of purchase for something that I sold as a secondhand item. What if I sold an antique item that is not possible to provide proof of purchase? Technically the buyer can provide the proof of purchase/ebay invoice of what he paid me for the item. that is HIS proof of purchase as he bought the item from me.

Can someone share their experiance with insurance claim for most parcel or explain the rational for their of my proof of purchase for the item?

**Update 23/04***
got am email from the claims saying that because I do not have proof of lodging the parcel. They have closed my case.
I email them explaining my process and I am waiting to hear back.
Not optimistic. could be $700 down the drain.

  • Our experience is that the insurance will only cover the lesser of your cost of the item or the sale price.
Not sure where you stand if you cannot provide evidence of the cost price.

  • From their T&Cs:

[Auspost will] compensate the Claimant in an amount equal to the lesser of the following:
5.2.1 the Claimant’s direct loss; or
5.2.2 the amount of the Limit in respect of that article.

A claim for the loss of an article must provide, together with the claim form -
    11.2.1 a receipt evidencing payment of the fee charged by Australia Post for the Service in accordance with clause 7;
11.2.2 such further or other evidence as Australia Post may reasonably require including evidence of entitlement to claim including personal identification, and evidence of the value of the article; and
11.2.3 a statutory declaration as to the details and circumstances of the claim

  • I had the same issue a few years back, they accepted a screenshot of a price from a website that was still selling the item instead.

It is very hard to get auspost to accept anything that isnt currently on sale.
If you give them the original receipt, they will also use the time between purchase and now to reduce its value by depreciation, thats why they want the original receipt.

if you originally paid $700, and sold it for $700 on ebay and its about 2 years old, the insurance will likely only pay half that, if you bought it originally for $3000, and sold it for $700 on ebay, and insured it for $700, you have a very good chance of getting the full amount if providing the original receipt.

it doesnt matter what you insure for, it only matters if you can prove its current value. They will also refund you the postage costs.

    • they depreciate it? what is the point of insuring it for the value sold on ebay?

Anyway, thank you. that was really helpful.
I think I am going to have a big fight with them

    • This doesn't seem right - if OP insured for an agreed amount (as opposed to 'market value') they should have no right to try and beat the insured amount down after the fact.

  • I used an ebay invoice for Fastaways insurance

  • The flip side. Instead of me making the claim. the buyer makes the claim and use the ebay invoice to determine value of goods.

    • The buyer cannot make the claim, you are australias post customer as the sender, you paid for the postage and the insurance, they will only deal with you directly.

also something i found out at the time.
