Wood Stove Fan Aluminium Heatsink Peltier TGA

Has anyone tried/got a recommendation on these peltier woodstove fans? I see them for about $150 locally or about $70 from the usual scumbags. I bought a pair of peltiers from eBay that arrived today after an eBay seller cancelled and refunded a complete fan assembly, so I can hopefully cobble together a stovefan in the meantime. What does the OzB hivemind say…?

  • I thought these were stirling (mechincal) engines, rather than peltier (electrical), but I see there are both.

Years ago I played around with a peltier (component/block/diode?) that I got on ebay for a few dollars. It was less than 1 cm thick. It warmed up a bit if I put 12v through it, but I didn't find a way to have a big enough temperature gradient between the two sides to generate enough power to do anything. From memory sticking it on top of the wood stove with an ice cube on top produced milliwatts. Not enough to run a fan in any case.

I'd be interested in what your multimeter says is the power output when you apply the heat.

    • Yeah will do, I have a passive heatsink on the way so I can get some idea. I'm thinking wood stove, passive heatsink fins down, two peltiers, some scrap aluminium, old cpu cooler. Mount a low voltage motor and a quad prop blowing across and out. Can run the peltiers either series or parallel and see what happens…

      • Perhaps you could power the cpu cooler from the peltier devices?

        • Nah CPU cooler wants 12v-ish. I haven't got enough parts on hand right now to check, but I expect up to about 5v off a peltier, maybe 2 or 3 watts… FWIW others have Instructables and sustainability blog posts on making these things, but they are all so overwhelmingly positive, my BS detector is slightly raised…

  • Just put a ceiling fan above the heater & it will throw out the heat

  • YouTube Cruising The Cut. One of his videos explains the fan on his woodstove. He's got several hundred though…
