  • Is this the same as a6000, what's the difference?

    • +4

      It is the a6000

    • +10

this is the a6000, there is no difference as it is the same product. the ILCE is just the Sony product/model number (I(nterchangeable )L(ens )C(amera with )E(-mount)6000B(ody only)), a6000 is the product name. A L at the end is single lens kit, a Y is dual lens kit. Colour isn't usually listed but this one would be /B for black.

      Same as the Alpha 6000.

      Model Number from Sony Australia:

      Model: ILCE6000B

    • +1

Yep it's A6000 (same model I have) - ILCE just refers to interchangeable lens camera (e-mount), and the B at the end means it's black.

I was going for cheapest deecent APS-C combo I could get a while back and the best deal I could find on a 2nd-hand A6000 was $300 so this seems like a great deal to me.

As Wilburre notes, you need to factor in the cost of a lens though. Teds sometimes has kit zoom available separately for $99 used with warranty, but I wanted a prime so I went for the Sigma 30/2.8. Very light, very sharp and should be able to get one for $150-200 with a bit of searching. Sony 50/1.8 is also available for a bit more, but the field of view is pretty restricted with a 1.5x crop.

yeah one thing that put me off the a6000 is the price of lenses. They aren't crazy expensive, but I found it easier and cheaper to get lenses for my canon, and a friend had the same experience with nikon. canon 50mm prime f1.8 can be had for under $100 new, and there is a 300mm zoom lens for ~$150. Sigma and others have great support for canon and nikon too, and the used market for lenses is huge. the main reason i never jumped on the 6000 though was my 600d kept kicking and I was holding out for sony to refresh this model line - and they still haven't (which really shits me tbh).

        • Canon DSLR lenses are indeed cheap and plentiful, but I was comparing A6000 with Canon M6 about a year ago, and the lens selection/availability for the EOS M line wasn't great! Not into using big lenses with a converter btw.

I sort of miss the flexibility of my full size DSLR and bag full of lenses, but then again I love the compactness and light weight of my current kit….

          • @Extremophile: yeah eos m feels like a bit of a step back, would have been nice to be able to use aps-c "standard mount" lenses without adaptor.

          • @Extremophile: M user here. While you're right that there aren't a lot of native lenses in that series, they're all good lenses at the bare minimum, while the 11-22, 22 f/2, 28 f/3.5 macro, and 55-200mm are excellent performers. The 32mm f/1.4 is simply exquisite.

And they're all competitively priced. Sigma have a trio of nice primes as well, and there are rumours of several more primes to be released by Canon later this year.

        • +1

They did refresh this line. Since the a6000, there has been the a6300, a6500, a6400 and more recently a6100 & a6700. Of all of these, the a6100 is what you'd probably call the the successor to the a6000.

  • really good entry level mirrorless camera for beginners.

  • +2

This is actually the cheapest this has ever been. Search for Sony Alpha A6000. Most of the time it is sold with a lens - investigate the lens cost before purchasing as a body alone is not a true indication of cost. These are starting to get long in the tooth, released Q1 2014. When I looked into getting one to replace my aging 600d they looked to be well featured and good performers for the price with way better low light performance (in their consumer tier) than anything from Canon or Nikon. Its been years though so there may be better options at this price point now.

  • How much is the lens cost?

    • $100 to $10,000 it will accept any Sony E Mount lens, there are heaps to choose from.

      • $850 at Harvey Norman or Ted's Cameras with the 16-50mm lens. Is this more worth it with the lens? I can't seem to find these lens online as a separate item for comparison

        • +2

The 16-50 is a particularly cheap kit lens and worth certainly no more than $200 in my opinion. Mine is useful on occasions as it is very small.

          • +1

@luny: Just checked yes you can buy kit lens for less than $200, personally I'd get the 18-135 if you can stretch that far, that may cost you $800 ish

            • @luny: thanksss - was about to pull the trigger but now its discontinued :( oh well next time

Delivery doesn't seem to be available. I tried 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, and 6000. It looks like only C&C from the Burwood store is available.

    • Wont ship to tasmania either.

    • yeah the product page says "limited stock" - generally means store stock only. I checked for Canberra and the nearest stock is Burwood in Sydney.

Sold mine and kind of regret it. It took supurb photos with the right lenses. My samyang ultrawide took the best landscapes. It is important to note that this camera has pretty rubbish battery. I find that I want to use my rx100 iii more on holidays so I sold it. The body is compact but the lenses are not!

    • How did the a6000 photo quality compare to the rx 1000 iii?

      • You can't really compare a fixed lens compact with an interchangeable lens mirrorless without at least listing what lens you want to use. Also there's inherent differences in the sensor size that affects images.

      • +1

I find that a6000 photos definitely have more dynamic range than the rx100iii. The colours were also quite nice with the samyang lens and I use a lot of the photos for wall papers or large prints. This varies from lens to lens though.
I also found that unless you spend large amounts of money on a fast prime you may as well have an rx100 for night photos. My main issue that I found was I would have to carry around a bag of interchangeable lenses and it was quite bulky. I am into backpacking holidays and I feel that you attract thieves by having a massive cannon strapped to your chest! Keep in mind this model of a6000 does not have image stabilization built into the body so the nicer lenses that have it are bigger.
I find that an rx100 iii can do about 80% of what I want on a holiday and will fit in a pocket. It is wide enough and is bright enough over the zoom range to satisfy my needs. It is much better than a phone and not that much worse in terms of image quality compared to a mirrorless, particularly in the day. I hope this helps, I feel better about my decision now!

        • Cheers, thanks for the comparison

Can confirm poor battery life. OEM batteries are really expensive too. I bought some Wasabi spares. One was defective but got replacement - CS seems good.

They beefed up the battery for the latest A6600 IIRC, but at $2k+ they bleeding well ought to have!

      • Can't believe the cost of the new models hey. I'm assuming the a6500 would be a bit cheaper now pretty good with a cheaper lens without image stabilization. That would be a nice package actually.

  • Tried calling up good guys and jb HiFi, they don't have the body only a6000, therefore can't price match, this deal is only for Burwood stores and that's it as mentioned previously, got me worked up for nothing 😢

  • It's coming up as 'Discontinued' and back to $999 again.

  • They probably only had one, it's not a bad deal but it's a pretty dated 1st gen camera from 6 years ago

  • This thing is ancient old - I think it was released in 2014!!! But it is one of the best selling mirrorless cameras of all time and still holds up well today from all reports. Definitely a beginners camera at this stage and the need to buy a lens separately isn't so beginner friendly. Probably for ozbargainers, finding a second hand 16-50mm pz could be found pretty cheap or a prime lens like the sony 35mm f1.8 would be a great place to start. But for this reason I find I'm recommending m43 for beginners because there's dime a dozen cheap awesome lenses for that system that usually works out better than sony apsc cameras

  • I got this camera last year from the Amazon US Prime Day for US$101.xx including a 16-55mm. lens

    Excellent camera Btw.

Great camera, had the cam with one lens for $600 back in 2014. Thanks for my former colleague with her SONY employee price. I think it's pretty good value considering after 6 years the body itself still costs $329.

  • +1

Wow this is really cheap! I was lucky I got a second hand one with <~1000 shutter counts for $300. This is my first compact mirrorless and I can tell you that its amazing for what it can do. The downside is that the lenses are quite pricey.

    • Don't get a full frame :P

  • Woah I just got one off gumtree recently for 530 with the kit lens and a few spare batteries! Can't believe the body is so cheap

  • +1

I've had a6000 for a few years now, but every time I use it to take photos I smile at just how nice the photos are (vs a smart phone). It's just an amazing camera, especially for that price (too bad it's expired, but I hope they are in the hands of people who will appreciate them)

  • +1

Great camera got one with a Lens kit before we went on holiday OS a few years ago.
It's super easy to use, I am a photography noob and the photo quality is great.
The wife is a Nikon SLR user and she likes the quality of photos the Sony takes.

  • Darn…. i missed this one. ;(
