Looking for Ideas for Side Projects

I am a software dev with a bit of time on my hands. I want to start some side projects and looking for some ideas.

My skills mainly lie in developing web applications but I also have experience with mobile app development. But part of this is about skills development so I'm up for learning and trying something new as long as it's interesting.

Is there something you kind of wish exists on the web? A problem which you wish had a solution? Even if you don't know the exact solution, let me know the problem and maybe we can discuss how it could be solved.

I'm looking for ideas which I can develop an MVP in about 3 weeks (about 30 hours part-time). What that means is I'd have to be able to break the idea down into something I could build in a quick and dirty fashion to test out whether the idea has legs or not. If there's potential, I'll keep going.

  • I got a list of 20 ideas but wouldn’t be giveing them to strangers.

    • Hope none of them are an AI

    • I once had a student on day release from jail - a low risk of violence, etc.

As this was an intro computer class, he shared with me that he'd been keeping secret his big idea for a computer program that was gonna make his RICH !!!

I said to do what - he started to explain - I quickly realised the functionality that he thought he was gonna sell for millions of dollars - was already available in a free app

that's a problem with keeping big development ideas on the back burner for too long - they can get overtaken by history

      • As wise man once said, success is 99% hard work, 1% idea.

The social network movie makes people think it was the other way around, but the idea of social network has been there in friendster and MySpace, the exclusivity of Harvard is nothing but great execution plan. His success is in his simple perfectly executed site.

When you go around and see the success stories in this world, you will find that most of them does not have the original idea.

  • one example I heard popular overseas was an app to find where masks were available

dunno whether you'd link that with google maps data or what

    • Not for Australia plenty of cheap ones on Kogan etc now. Still about $40 for 50pc. Potentially cheaper if you can risk it from AliExpress

  • How about game dev? I've always wanted to make one of those .io games myself.

  • Late to the party, but I would love a staff rostering app.
I run a Service Desk where we rotate staff on a two week cycle (8 members in the team). There are a variety of shifts including weekends, early mornings, lates etc and we have to give priority to certain shifts (ie the 9-5:30 shift can be lower priority to fill because if it's missed, we still have someone doing 7-3:30 and 11:30-8, so we still have coverage.)
The real challenge is making it as fair as possible and rotating it evenly through the team WHILE still allowing people to go on leave (which messes up rotations).
We're yet to find a tool that can do this easily and it requires a lot of manual manipulation.

There may be something out there that works really well for automation, I just can't find it yet!

  • 2 platforms
Airbnb for Warehousing, allow everybody to lease their spare room/garage/shed for distributed warehousing. delivery times become a lot less.
Uber for delivery, allow everybody to take up jobs to deliver mail from warehouse to receiver, doesn't matter if you want to walk, bike or have a van.
