Poll: Good Laundry Detergent?

I've bought a giant tub of FAB and I can't stress enough how much I dislike it and it's performance, not too moved by it.

Any idea what would make a good detergent?
Powder or Gel doesn't matter, tho I find myself being way more conservative with powder 😎🤘

Cheers!

I like BioZet Rapid. $13 for 2.3L from Reject Shop. Apparently good for 120 washes. Made in Japan. Despite the name I use it in a normal wash cycle and it usually does a good job. Leaves a very slight scent on clothes when wet and no odour at all once dry. I don't like my clothes smelling like a potpourri dish.

    • +5

I used Biozet Rapid in the past - my shirt collars weren't getting cleaned properly.

Fab, Dynamo, Coldpower and Radiant all failed the shirt collar test as well.

Switched to OMO Ultimate and have had no problems since.

      • +1

Just made my life easier! as mentioned below was gonna tackle Dynamo or Omo! :)

I'm surprised Tide or any other major German brand isn't sold around O-o

        • +2

Tide is available in Costco if you are familiar with that brand.

          • @Tsuivan: There's a few jokes in there with what Trump has said recently… Twitter users calling him the Tide Pod president and what not.

        • I'm surprised Tide or any other major German brand isn't sold around O-o

Tide is an American brand though.

        • Dynamo is half price at woolies if that helps :)

        • +1

As a rule of thumb, gel detergents are better at cleaning but you get less "washes" out of the bottle.

I used to be on the cheap powder stuff, bought the pricey stuff and noticed the difference.
But doing 2-3 washes of the cheap stuff was still better and cheaper than the pricey stuff. However, for me getting a good wash the first time is more important because it saves electricity, water, and most importantly TIME.

For that reason, I do not care about the brand. I only care about the quality and price.
And with my experimenting, my conclusion came to the Aldi Gel Detergents. I buy a couple bottles of it, plus some softener, and don't have to think twice. I know the clothes will come out clean, fresh, and its much better and/or cheaper than many name-brand option *coughOMOcough *

        +1 on Omo Ultimate.

It didn’t seem to be reviewed by Choice.

        • +6

Choice had an Omo on there, I thought if the normal one worked well, Ultimate would work Ultimately!

I kid you not, grey/brown collar to nearly totally white again in one wash. This is on a TM Lewin non-iron white shirt.

          • @iampoor: The Napisan oxywash seems to be good for making things white, as well. I soak them before I throw them in the wash.

          • @iampoor: The shirt of ozbargain

        • We've used OMO Sensitive + Sard (not sure which one) for the last 10-11 years. Never any real issues with it, so haven't looked at changing.

      • OMO ruined some of my clothes. It is the cheapest detergent I found. 5KG for $10 or $12 always in BigW. I now pay more than that for Radiant (2KG for $8) but clothes seem softer than with OMO.

        • +1

You can get 5kg of Coles brand for 5 bucks or so

    • +2

I like the brand too, I think BioZet Attack. But I wonder if I just swapped to home brand liquid would i even notice the difference. I think I just read once it has an enzyme that neutralises cat urine.

      • Do cats pee on your clothes often?

        • +2

For washing the couch cusion it did pee on. And if it's good enough for cat pee, I figure it must be good for clothes.

          • @AustriaBargain: We use the CSI Urine spray. It seems to work well.

For some reason one of our little Girl cats decided to pee on our IKEA couch, twice. She’s been great apart from that and we don’t know what the attraction is.

            • @try2bhelpful: At a guess, it's where you sit so she wants to go over it with her scent, either to mer territory or so that you also get scented? Maybe a cat whisperer can tell us?

    • Hey me Asian aunt uses these didn’t realise it’s made in Japan.
Still have 2 whole boxes of omo capsule remaining from 2 years ago.

  • +11

You can choose one based off choice reviews:
    https://www.choice.com.au/home-and-living/laundry-and-cleani…

    • OoOo! I like that! Gonna keep an eye out for the top ones!
      That's hot.

      • +3

So confused why the heck did this comment got negative votes, literally said thanks.

        People are so freaking weird.

    • Yeah, Choice is awesome for these types of questions!

  • +2

It depends what kind of fabrics you are washing. Some are damaged by optical brighteners which most of the detergents contain.

  • +4

    I buy Coles brand.

Surfactants and enzymes have been commidity products for decades at this point.

    • +1

Tried once but results didn't match with Omo to be honest. Omo is at the half price regularly, just like other brands.

    • The cheap one in the light blue box? I use that, can't tell the difference with anything else, seems to work fine. Also not too smelly

  • +8

Have been pretty happy with the Aldi one - switched from the super cheap Woolworths brand one in the blue box which started to make me itchy…

    • the liquid or giant thin powder box?

      • Trimat in the box is great. Look for the one which has won the Choice Award.

        • +1

          Trimat may have been reformulated.

It only scored like 50% on the perspiration test, versus the top brand "Omo with A Touch of Comfort Inspired Freshness Front" with 83% on the perspiration test…

I usually use the Omo Ultimate, we've used the trimat. The most recently (circa 3 months ago) didn't seem all that great. Easier to get the Omo ultimate delivered by amazon rather than stuff around in queues these days to get detergent…

Ymmv on the white collar, sleeve cuff tests.

  • +3

I've tried a few powders with a front loader washing in cold water

OMO - tried and true. Have been using this since front loaders were invented
Biozet - got this as a free sampler when they were released and didn't expect much. Turned out great and I bought a lot of boxes since.
Cold power - didn't seem to clean very well compared to OMO
Coles Ultra - recommended by Choice at one point in time and I don't know why.
Aldi trimat advanced - will try this next.

    • -3

      What OMO varient 🤔?

      • +4

OMO Ultimate powder, not the sensitive and not the base version. OMO Ultimate is currently on sale at Coles $11 for 1.8kg.

    • Coles Ultra

Was top of their ratings, but not tested this time because its being "reformulated"

      • Yeah, I don't know why they're messing with it. Coles Ultra was/is my go-to powder for price ($4.20 for 1 Kg or 22 washes) vs performance + lack of complaints from other household members. Hopefully they don't stuff it up.

  • OMO gel dual capsules are quite regularly 40% off at Coles so just grab a bag of those every so often. They're pretty good and no issues at all.

  • +1

Tried so many and settled on omo

    • -2

      What OMO varient 🤔?

  • +1

    OMO for me.

Combine it with Napisan Gold for the whites and work shirts and they come out great every time. Even gets out the nasty collar grime and underarm stains.

    • -2

      What OMO varient 🤔?

      • +1

Ultima t e sensitive for the baby and linen. The blue active for us :D

      • +1

        Just the regular 'active clean'.

    • See my post about Napisan (sodium percarbonate) below.

  • no takers for Dynamo?

  • Power of 4

  • +3

Aldi Trimat for me .. recently bought the bulk 5kg pack .. can't go wrong.. used Dynamo and OMO earlier .. but my washing comes cleaner .. washed everyday, have hospitality workers in the household with dirty clothes everyday

    • We use ALDI one at home as well. My wife bought it once and has been happy with it.

    • I forgot to add.. I also use Aldi in-wash booster ..

      • Me too. Looked at the choice selection a while back, and switched from OMO. Washing is just as clean, but saving money.

  • I've been using Omo Ultimate for the last year or so. We bought a couple of big things of the Aldi Trimat in one of their special buys and it was ok, but when I ran out and got the Omo I realised how much the Trimat really wasn't cutting it. We were paying $22 for 5kg on Amazon about 6 months ago, but more recently it's been sitting at $28 - almost about to open the last box but probably won't see it as cheap for the time being.

  • We've been very happy with the Aldi Trimat powder.

  • +1

    kirkland brand

    • I use this seems ok, whats wrong with it?

  • +2

Ecostore brand. Cheap, works, and makes me a feel a bit better about the earth (which is important).

    • -7

"eco-friendly" products are the only thing I rule out when it comes to cleaning…
I don't think flower-power is strong enough to remove stains or treat BF's work stanch…🤷

      • +1

eco store is bloody great. i suggest you try their body soaps.

        • I like my cleaning products abrasive :(

  • +1

Another vote for OMO. I mainly use the sensitive version in liquid form and it's good. Not the cheapest out there, but works well.

  • +1

I was a long time user of OMO and I was happy with it but then a friend introduced me to Aldi Trimat and I haven’t looked back since. Used together with the booster (on whites) it’s amazing. Whites come out looking brand new and on the plus side, it’s way cheaper than OMO.

    • Actually interesting considering IT IS alot cheaper - and it doesn't seem like Trimat does half bad according to people just that Omo was "better"…

      FOOD FOR THOUGHT :D

    • Could have saved commenting earlier 😊 Same as my experience.

  • +3

Euca laundry detergent is the best. buy online or Repco sells it as well. Euca laundry powder. Grey water and septic safe. Low sodium and phosphorous levels - safe for soil and plants. 100% biodegradable. No synthetic detergents, insolubles or fillers which clog your soil.

Totally dissolves in hot or cold water. Low allergenic - great for eczema and allergies. Eucalyptus oil to loosen stains.

    • +1

I use this too. Got it from Mitre10 (Bayswater, Vic). No complaints.

  • +1

I have used Euca laundry liquid (and lots of their range) for years. Recently they decided to remove the blue food colouring they had been putting in for decades. I use a quarter of a cap in my front-loader and it's been great.

  • +3

Euca, we've been using it for years, buy the big tubs from Blackwoods: https://www.blackwoods.com.au/hygiene-cleaning/laundry-deter…

Am I a sock puppet too Kundi?

    • +1

Genuinely do not believe you, you could be the OG user with the multiple accounts :) wouldn't know.

      • Please do not accuse members. Just hit report and let us investigate.

        • -1

          I won't - but they asked… lol

  • Front or top loader?

    • -4

I'll tell you a little secret , they're the same and both can use the same products 🤯🤯🤯

      • If this was true then all products would claim to be suitable for front loaders.

My understanding is that front loaders need a low sudsing detergent and top loaders are not particular.

  • +2

Tide or Kirkland, are very good.

    • Any idea about local stores that sell Tide? Been wondering where they at :(
      CBA To wait for AmazonUS

  • +2

I use the Earth Choice brand (powder, double concentrate) without an issue. It does need to be gray water safe for us.

Will check out Euca from above comments.

  • Has anyone tried the new Attack Zero from KAO.

  • +1

What's a good brand to inject myself with as a covid cure?

  • +2

So glad i never have to concern myself with stuff like this. I just buy the cheapest brand at Aldi along with a quick cycle and job done. Not sure how dirty people's laundry gets.

    • +2

Mate I was going crazy reading through the comments. I'm the same, buy it from Aldi, it's in the cold cycle and it's back on my body when it's dry.

Have never had any complaints, not sure what I could be missing out on?

      • +1

Yea who knows but not surprised. I can barely relate to most people around me with overcimplicated lives. Happy to be an outlier though, life is good.

  • Omo Ultimate is very good but far too strongly scented. Omo Eco was my fav but I think is discontinued now. Currently use Loveables Dark Wash for blacks (it does actually work wonders on dark clothes) and Biozet/Odour Eliminator for everything else. Stay away from the Fabs/Radiants/Surfs etc.

  • +1

    FAB IS CRAP!

I'm too lazy and self-entitled to read all the above comments, but Choice reckons Coles Ultra performs really well (like 3rd out of stacks tested, but I can't remember exactly).

Basically long story short, go the Coles Ultra. It's cheap and it works great.

    • +1

      Picked up Aldi's Tridmat Advance!
      6$? Maybe.

Yeah Fab stinks, literally, always stank the laundry and never dissolved :(

Where were you when I was originally looking for detergent :<

      • Trimat also another one that scored well!
Just never in stock near me.

  • I use the black Aldi liquid one right now. My mum and Auntie both use it.

Always buy liquid since John C. Dvorak from the No Agenda Podcast said liquid is better than powder.

Reason was whatever is done to make the detergent into a powder removes some properties that a liquid detergent doesn't.

  • Love the green bottle from Aldi - > $2 per 1.5L I believe? Green apple scented. No issue with skin or clothes.

  • Korean housewives be like.. .OMO MOMOMOOM

  • +1

I have used the Earth Choice Laundry Liquid for years. It works well and I love that it is cruelty-free and environment-friendly.

    https://naturesorganics.com.au/product/earth-choice-natural-…

It is only $2.55/1L at Coles.
