TCL 55P8M Ultra HD LED TV $589 (+ $75 Delivery or $0 Click & Collect) @ Myer

140

Saw the TCL 55" (139cm) Ultra HD LED Android TV 55P8M55 on the Myer website for $589 (around $200 off RRP) and about $100-$150 less than other "trusted" stores (that I could see online).

+$75 for delivery is pretty steep, but if you are near one of the Myer stores still doing Click and Collect, then that is free.

From reviews appears to be an okay budget TV.

Hope this is an okay post… Long-time ozbargain reader, first time poster!

I have the 65 version, great TV for normal use. Android TV is also great.

  • 75" version of the same model for $1289 isn't too bad either! https://www.myer.com.au/p/tcl-75-190cm-ultra-hd-led-android-…

    • Good price. I'm waiting for a 75" UHD Android TV to drop below $1000.

I have the 50" version. I paid $436 for it 2 weeks ago from JB. Fantastic TV for the kid's play room. Android TV with all the usual apps. Picture and sound it great IMO and serves it's purpose. 3 year manufacturer warranty too.

    • I bought the 43" TCL P8m for $430 from goodguys about 7 months ago.So far perfect, no issues.

  • Question for those more informed than me: Should I consider Dolby Vision an essential? Will this still play all HDR content/will it look good?

Additionally, I can afford a low-end OLED but just don't know if it is really worth 2-3x the price.

    For my primary/only TV.

    • Depends how much you value watching your TV - get the OLED

I've recently done a whole bunch of internet research trying to answer these questions. Wound up waiting for a TV with full-array local dimming to go on sale. The cheap OLEDs have issues and all OLEDs run the risk of burn in (I hook a PC up to my TV so there's a huge risk of burning in the Windows taskbar) and size matters a lot on distance. If you're looking at a small distance then smaller is better, but a long distance you're probably better off getting a cheaper 65" TV than a 55" OLED.

Mostly what I learned is Australia gets crap models compared to the US. I thought Hisense TVs would finally be good this year but apparently they cheaped out and went with 8 bit panels, so my search continues…

Worth noting that all the 2020 TVs are being announced and rolled out, so 2019 models will start going on sale soon. I'm really hoping for a discount on the Sony X9500G, then I'll pull the trigger.

      • Yeah I've done a fair bit of reading too and it seems widely accepted that OLED is better. Those who buy them say it's absolutely worth it; those who do not say it isn't which makes sense but isn't especially helpful.

My feeling for now is that since I usually watch in a brightly lit open plan living/kitchen area and the key uses are sport and video games an LCD panel will be fine but I'd want one with Dolby Vision.

        • That's one reason OLED can be worse than LCD, a cheap OLED can still have issues with motion blurring and you want to make sure you get great input lag and response time for gaming. They also tend to be highly reflective. OLED will win for movies in a dark room absolutely every time, but there's never a fixed best solution.

The key selling point of OLED is absolute blacks, but full array local dimming can come pretty close in the high end Sony/Samsung TVs - https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/picture-quality/local-dimmin… (most models on that site are the US ones, so hard to find the exact equal here in Australia).

And with cheap TVs come issues. The Hisense models can have issues with Dolby Vision - https://www.techradar.com/au/reviews/hisense-o8b-oled-tv

Not to say OLED is a bad buy, but I've found for my specific use case (wanting low reflections, no burn in, PC gaming) LCD is actually a better buy unless I shell out for a high end LG OLED.

        • Doesn't the P8S have Dolby vision?

I cant imagine youll see a huge price cut on the 2019 models

        • Depends, there's already lower prices baked in (they're already cheaper than they were at release) so it won't be like we'll get these TVs for $600, but manufacturing of the new models would have started months ago, before the pandemic hit. And retail sales are down globally.

I'm not expecting to get a $1,000 discount, but one of the 2019 full-array local dimming models for less than $1,500, considering they tend to have the best of hardware inside, would be pretty good.

      • damn right sony x95g/x9500g is the one, either that or the q70r?

Does anyone have issues with backlight dimming inadvertently on dark scenes? Even with all settings turned off?

    • +1

I get the backlight dimming on certain apps (mainly Stan)

    • +1

Apparently the dimming is really bad with PronHub. so says a friend.

  • Aren't all Myer stores closed at the moment?

    • +2

Some are open solely for C&C.

  • Great TV. It's even listenable without external speakers. I've got one and convinced a few friends too

  • Great tv for the price. Above average picture quality too. Sounds great for a tv. My only concern is that Netflix quite often doesn't want to connect and you have to reboot the tv

    • I much prefer Netflix on my iPad or phone and casting to Chromecast ultra. That way I can download episodes in advance if the connection is going to be choppy. Also, it's way faster than any built in Neflix smartTV app I've seen.

      • You're kidding. Netflix on my Samsung TV is way better and more reliable than outputting from my phone to Chromecast. Flawless with a brilliant picture.

  • I have one unopened that I just picked up from TGG today (price matched Bing Lee at $548 collected). Sure from looking at 50" in JB a few months ago it has 3 HDMI and 3 USB. Box also days it comes with the extra "voice" remote, so that's nice I guess will spend the weekend installing.

When I collected they had "clearance" 55" LG OLED TVs at $1995. Beautiful but not 4x the tv for my use.

Good Guys has 55P8S for $645 (til 29 April)

    https://www.thegoodguys.com.au/tcl-55-inches-p8s-android-quh…

I don't know the differences between the two, but the S model has a $600 higher RRP than the M for about an extra $50 vs OP.

    $35 delivery or free C&C

Was keen to look into this and came across this:

      P8M – 43, 50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75.85 inches. UHD resolution with Quantum Dot elements. The color depth is 10 bits (8 bits + FRC) 60 frames per second

P8S – 55 and 65 inches UHD resolution, analogue of P8M, screen without Quantum Dot technology, 8bit color depth, 60 frames per second

In order words modem S is not better than model M… Perhaps S is the older one and the RRP has not been updated.

Folks. I am in the hunt for a new tv. I have $1k to spend. Size wise i was thinking of 55 inch. I was initially leaning towards maybe a Sony X70. Now i am not sure if i should maybe get a TCL panel with a decent external android box?

Any advice or recommendations on a new TV?

    Thanks!
