What's Happening with PSU Prices?

Noticed that power supply prices seems to have skyrocketed over the past week or two and a lot of the lower end to midrange units are out of stock at major retailers.

I know the exchange rate is crap now but the kind of almost 50% jump in price appeared to be excessive. Are people panic buying PC components? Or are we having some further supply chain issues?

Nah not panic buying. Upgrading or building new PCs. International freight prices have increased too.

A power supply is an essential part of a computer, there were alot of people saying pc components were going to increase in price not just because of the aud, but also covid, if you are buying other components to build a pc, and everyone needs a psu to power it, thats going to push demand up significantly.

When you add supply channels are dead atm, and all components come from overseas, add those 3 things together, plus people spending time at home, possibly needing a work pc leads to an explosion in demand while supply is only based on whats on hand at most suppliers in australia.

I guess people are wanting to build PCs because of the lockdown, it does help the fact the AUD and the USD has been fluctuating quite a bit.

Supply chain for just about anything electrical is stuffed at the moment. Wouldn't expect this to change for a few months yet. Combine this with excess demand and Bob's yer mother's brother.

  • I recently bought one and noticed they have gone up a bit. Picked up an EVGA-P2 650W Platinum for $188 from a local bricks and mortar store.

    It isn't just PSU's.

There are still occasional deals to be had, just need to look carefully for them. Managed to get a Corsair Vengeance 750W 80 Plus Silver Semi-modular PSU for around $112 a few weeks ago on eBay. They're highly rated on the PSU tier list (uses Japanese capacitors and is said to perform at Gold efficiency) and can still be had for $128 delivered on eBay (RRP ~$169)

Good find! I'd have bought this if I'd known about it.

So I bought a high end techfast computer and am looking to change the psu on arrival. I just bought this for $135 shipped on eBay. Thanks mate! That was the best deal I could find for a high wattage and well reviewed semi modular psu. You just saved me some $$$. <3

    Prices Soaring Upwards.

  • Printer prices are up too. Been trying hard to find one…

I think all the reliance on the Chinese supply chains will make all of us kick ourselves.

  • Just use old PSU's, they are always being thrown out during curb side cleanup.
