97pts Huon Hooke - Wine of the Week - 8th April 2020:

I tasted this stonking pinot alongside wines priced at least AUD $100, and it was better than most. It has a powerfully expressive spicy, smoky bouquet with delicious cherry fruit and a dash of charred-oak. It’s full-bodied, flooding the mouth with exotic, hedonistic flavours. Good tannins; excellent structure. A serious pinot. (Screwcap)

Ageing: drink now and for at least 12 years

Food: Pan-fried lamb fillets with pesto

Ranked: #1 of 69 2018 Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley

    Which $100 Pinot?

    • I guess only Huon knows.

Apart from Bass Phillip, are there any Aussie units over $100?

      • Ranked: #1 of 69 2018 Pinot Noir from Yarra Valley

        • Yarra Yering Pinot Noir 2018
        • Toolangi E Block Reserve Pinot Noir 2018
        • Rochford Premier Pinot Noir 2018
        • Thanks.

Of course, Yarra Yering is expensive. All their wines are expensive. They are good, though. I should have thought of that one.

Toolangi has new owners and the Reserve has gone AFAIK. Estate and Paul's Rd only, now (?) I'm surprised it was ever over $100, though as their wines were always reasonably priced IMO.

The Rochford wine is new to me. They never struck me as being a top Yarra producer, but if their marketing department thought a $100 wine would boost their image then it all makes sense. Kind of.

      • By Farr releases an $100+ Pinot

      • Mount Mary pinot has been above $100 for several years now.
Same for Bindi Block 5 and the Yering Station Reserve.
All three are spectacular in the right years

  • It's less at Dan;s, like $29 a bottle.

    • That is the standard range Pinot Noir, not the single vineyard 'Deer Farm' pinot

      • Confusing with all the different ranges lol
