With so many new company popping up just to make and sell hand sanitiser, what guarantee will you get that this is truely 70% alc as they claim to be? Especially with the imported one. If the alc is below 70% it just a placebo hand wash.

    • +3

Sadly there is no guarantee, as if we ever did. To be honest, in past regular days, we wouldnt have questioned but we still did not have the guarantee.

        Username checkout, big time….:)

    • Are you saying there is no chance of beating Covid-19 with a China-made sanitiser?

I might be negged for my comment but I am trying to avoid anything made in China..

Same here, and I have been for years now, it's not a matter of racism or philosophical view.

For me it's a matter of quality:

Generally, the quality of products made in China is often questionable at best.

This (I suspect) is probably more a matter of how much a producer is willing to spend on quality control, rather than the capability of the Chinese industry to make good products.

I don't look at brand names anymore either (and therefore I avoid their brand name price premiums) because different brands can sometimes make the same product (except for the name) at the same factory in China, but their cost in Australia can be wildly different.

Unfortunately (as in this case for example) there is often no alternative, likely due to the fact that it's usually cheaper to make products in China, and ship them to a local market, than producing it locally.

          • +3

@BooYa: So you don't own anything apple or Samsung (or many other manufactures) that make a lot (most?) of their products in China. Not having a go, generally curious.

            • @Trantor: Theres

Chinese owned factories with Chinese or foreign design but Chinese quality control.
Chinese owned factories using say Aus or US design and quality control.
Or foreign set up factories using their own designs and quality control.

Sure China can make stuff well. But they tend not too and most people when they say they dont want to buy Chinese due to quality are referring to the first one, and sometimes the second if the foreign partner is interested in profit more than quality.

            • @Trantor: Of course I own products made in China, but Samsung phone is not one of them.

Samsung closed their last factory in China in 2019 https://www.sammobile.com/where-are-samsung-phones-made/amp/

I buy products made in other countries almost every time there is an alternative.

Last time I remember buying a washing machine, and to see where they were made I had to physically tip them forward so I could read the tiny label on the back, and see where they were made (they were stacked back to back in the shop).

The problem, as I said, that customers usually have no alternative other than products made in China.

Edit. I bought a Samsung printer not long ago, and it was made in China, so while they don't make their phones there anymore, they do make other products there.

          • +8

@BooYa: China do made high quality produces, the problem is ppl choose to buy the cheap and low quality one.

for example xiaomi air purifiers's filter, the one from xiaomi cost u $70, while other factories' only cost u $30.
they both made in China but the qualities ar not the same,
its ur choice, and im sorry to say this but u get what u paid for.

            • @samelight: China can make top quality products (as I said it is the producers who decide on the level of quality control).

I agree with you, people usually choose the cheaper product, and manufacturers/producers make what sells.

The problem, if you think it's a problem at all (I do because of the quality in general) is that there is often no alternative other than buying a Chinese product.

This is as much our fault as customers, as anything else.

Only we can change that, by not buying the cheapest products we can find (which are usually made in China).

          Why you kick my dog?

    • the cheeky part for 70% alc is not the Alcohol, industrial alcohols ar cheap to make,
its the bottle store it cost the most.
i can guarantee u that those cheap bottle won't stop it from evaporate, it may drop 10% every week after u open it.

      • -1

What do you wish to guarantee? and guarantee by what?

If the "cheap" bottle doesnt stop it from evaporation as you claim, alcohol may drop 10% every week BEFORE you open it. So your point is pointless.

If the evaporation "from the bottle" only happens AFTER you OPEN it…. maybe next time do NOT forget to re-cap the bottle.

        Brain is a good thing…

        • Dunno why you got downvoted, samelight made quite an extraordinary (and IMO very dubious) claim that 10% might evaporate every week after opening.

          • +3

@deadpoet: for a new bottle of shampoo (with pump) u need to twist the pump head to make it pops out.
its fully sealed only when the pump head is in the retrieved position.
so unless u ar going to re-seal it every time after used or it will leak becoz its not designed for store something could easily evaporated.

this is the regular pump u having.
            https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-pezP0p9OrTg/WnB6YgC3XeI/AAAAAAAAA…

when u use it to store alcohol, the pressure will build up as it evaporates,
eventually it will push the ball up to release.
its going to leak thats for sure, how fast is depends on the quality of the bottle (how strong is the spring how "fit" is the ball)
thats why i said "10% MIGHT evaporate every week after opening".

bottom line, this kind of cheap soap pump is not designed to hold pressures from inside the bottle, its going to leak, i can guarantee it!

and btw i don't want to reply to that guys coz he just trolling and tell ppl to use ur brain.

        Proof?

        • +1

aren't u supposed to disprove first when u making a doubt?

    • +1

I gauge it by my eczema's reaction.

If my interdigital folds arn't red and angry, it's not good enough!

    • Light it on fire as "prove" to yourself that it contains enough alcohol.

      • The question is how to prove after opening, it still has 70% or 65% or 62% or 53% left?!?!

  • +1

Thats a shiploads of Hand Sanitizer.

  • anyone heard of Zoono?

    • The stuff with secrets to its ingredients they claim is good but wont prove it… sure Ive heard of it.

      • +1

It's good and there is no secret to the ingredients. The active ingredient has been used since the 1930s. Their propriety technology is supposedly to be able to extend the longevity of the active ingredient. There was a company in Australia called Stayzon that used Zoono in their own bottles and sold in Woolies for a short time. Unfortunately they obviously didn't market their difference and as I understand it, made less than $50k in sales before it was deleted as a line. There was also some sort of legal action between the two. I then moved onto Zoono and unlike all my other teacher friends, I only had to apply once a day, rather than multiple times a day. And believe me, there were lots of sick kids leading up to the shut down. My favourite one was when I was on verandah duty and someone snotted on my leg as I walked past.

It's good stuff, but once Zoono reopened after running out of bottles, they jacked the cost of shipping to Australia. Previously they had been losing money and last year their stock price was down to 9 cents. Suddenly they could sell everything they could make and their share price went up to $1.80. Unfortunately for Stayzon the coronavirus came too late to save them and they relocated to Malaysia. I told Zoono when they jacked the price of postage that I would find an Australian alternative, and I have, for half the price. There is also plenty of evidence that the active ingredient works. I have read several scientific papers about the active ingredient, to make sure it was safe to use for my family. That's the teacher in me I guess.

        • so what did you find for half price?

  • Picked up a couple. Mostly just the 236ml for $7 left at my stores.

    • But those I read the back and seem didnt say the alcohol level (along with the other ones there).

  • No need any more

I've noticed sanitiser slowly making it way back on shelf. Lots of the small travel size ones along with hand wipes at Chemist Warehouse and scored 1lt from Priceline.

    • Hand wipes are my preference but not seen them as yet, so thanks for the heads up. Fortunately we had plenty of the handwipes before the virus hit, but running low. Found small packs are best for bags and pockets; have found the larger packs (in cars etc.) seem to dry out quicker, with repetitive opening.

      • Yes, I just visited quite a few of the Chemist Warehouse and saw heaps of stocks…a pack of 30pcs hand sanitizing wipes for $6.99.

    • Yes, but they are still greatly overpriced (I'm not talking about this deal, just talking in general).

I've seen a 60 mL bottle for about $9 recently from a well known pharmacy chain.

      • Local Amcal tried to sell me one single 3-ply mask (not sure its VFE PFE BFE properties) for $3 each…talking about rip-off…unbelievable especially from pharmacy giant like Amcal.

        • You want a P2 mask (European standard) equivalent to the US N95 standard, or higher (P3, N99, or N100).

    • +2

Yes, I just visited quite a few of the Chemist Warehouse and seems it is true that 500ml ($8.99) and 60ml *($2.98) are very much so in stock.

      • That's good to know. I've been avoiding Chemist Warehouse lately due to their size and how many people shop there.

I avoid medical centres for the same reason (I have both my parents in self isolation, to minimize the risk).

  • I only use sanitiser in / out the car and at home just use soap water. So 2x 300ml bottles have been plenty
