Good price, but by no means a premium pet food. No supermarket brand is.

This is probably the best of the crap dog food, so if you want to feed your dog crap food this is top of the pile.

    • Why do all the dog food posts need snooty comments like yours. Get off your high horse. I'm sure plenty of dogs lead a healthy and happy life despite being fed this "crap" dog food. Next thing you'll say is "if you cant afford to feed your dog earthborn holistic, then you cant afford a dog!"

Agree my dogs don't like the expensive stuff at all but love supercoat

        • my dogs don't like the expensive stuff at all but love supercoat

my kids don't like veggies but they love fries

veggies are more expensive than fries
          veggies are healthier than fries

my kids don't know any better
if it were up to them they would be eating fries all the time
as a parent the onus is on me to ensure that my kids eat their veggies and that fries are an occasional treat

@docians: Wow.. two thumbs up your comment
Choose good meals or give shit food for them
No more by product, whole grain, and salt in pet food
Buy costco pet product if you are considering food cost
It cost 3.3 dollars per 1kg, similar with cheap brand food

This is the dumbest thing I've read all day. The quality and ingredient list is garbage.

Wholegrain Wheat; Wholegrain Barley; Poultry oil and/or by-products; Meat meal and/or by-products; Wholegrain Corn

Fillers and low quality meat by-products shouldn't be in dog food and are not good for the animal. Better quality premium foods indeed do have an impact on a dog's health.

        • -3

You must not read very much…

        • In fairness, chicken nuggets and sausages don't look great on paper either! But us 2 legged idiots love them. As long as this isn't their sole diet (but some dogs you can't chop and change too regularly either), woof could do worse than Supercoat. I personally use Stockman food at the moment which works out similar or cheaper /kg.

          • +1

@tunzafun001: Yet people still buy chicken nuggets and sausages knowing they aren't good for them. Animals don't have a choice so why buy garbage that isn't good for them when they can't decide for themselves?

        • What do you propose instead of whole grains?

My guess is lentils, sweet potato or peas. None of which dogs naturally eat either, and most of which make up the holistic brand ingredient list, and which have been tied to heart health issues by the FDA pending further scientific study.

Grain free diets are the ultimate fad. There is no evidence to suggest whole grains are problematic in dogs. They are likely lower GI than much of the alternatives too. Allergy chance is very very low. Dogs have evolved the capability to digest them throughout human history for obvious (domesticated) reasons. Dogs aren't wolves.

Tldr: people love fads because it makes them think they are on the leading edge of pet health. It's a shame they are more dangerous than the alternatives.

More premium brands (supercoat is midrange) would indeed do away with by products for pure meat meal: higher density meat material.

Holistic brands use unproved ingredients in order to capture the "grain bad MMKAY" upper middle class drone market, and to compete with the big brands.

          • @Binka:

What do you propose instead of whole grains?

I think you’ve missed the point

The objection is to meat by products and poultry by products which this product has

For a similar price you can buy a dog food without meat byproducts and poultry by products

      • I don't understand why you're getting negged. Every dog food review seems to have its fair share of critics and negative reviews, even top brands like Black Hawk and Meals for Mutts. Seems like every dog owner is a veterinarian these days.

My family dogs have always lived for more than 10 yrs. We always bought affordable supermarket brands. Most importantly, our dogs were always outside getting rigorous physical activity (we live in a property).

        • I know why. Cause people like shaming others for buying what they may only be able to afford with no consideration that it may form part of the dogs diet - I’m sure plenty give their dogs ‘crap’ food supplemented with raw meat, raw/cooked Veges and other goodies.

It’s always the nanny brigade who insist their way is the right way. Next thing you know they’ll be telling me not to drink an occasional soft drink as it may cause tooth decay!!

          • @flashi007: I had a work college tell me something is wrong with her dog, she said he was loosing weight, stealing food and started to misbehave. This went on for a couple of weeks before she worked out the poor dog was starving because she was feeding it Woolworth brand dry food. She loves her dog but just did not know anything about pet food.

That is why i posed my comment, had nothing to do with shaming anybody.

that's just like saying anyone who eats healthy must be a doctor or a dietitian

          Simple not true

I don't think anyone is saying go buy a more expensive food
My 2c is for a similar price as this deal, you could get good that doesn't contain by products, than what is the justification for feeding this?

          • @docians: Pretty much my thinking as well - most premium brands you can get at online retailers for the same $$ per kg as the crap you can buy at Woolies.

            • @aligind4h0us3: Can you point me in the direction of some?

              I’m genuinely keen to know

              • @flashi007: Personally I buy my dog Instinctive Bite Grain Free Kangaroo (15kg bag) from Pet Circle which comes to $5.28 per kg however you can get Black Hawk Original Chicken and Rice (20kg bag) for $94.99 which comes to $4.75 per kg which when you compare it to supermarket food it might be slightly more but the quality and ingredient list is far superior. I'm also not saying go out and buy grain free dog food either. There are plenty of other premium brands and products that are better than supermarket food.

Best advice is to shop around online and do some research. Nothing beats checking the ingredient list and not seeing grains/corn and meat by-products.

  • How's this compared to Kirkland?

  • No supermarket brand is.

    I thought Applaws is

I'm sure plenty of dogs lead a healthy and happy life despite being fed this "crap" dog food.

Pet dogs eat what their owners feed them

As a pet owner I would try and feet my pet a food that gives best bang for my buck.

So for a similar price I could get a food that doesn't have stuff like poultry by products/ meat by products then why not.

  • People get their knickers in a knot about dog food. I top my good food up with stuff like this when they're having lots of fresh chicken (I get it cheap from work), as they're getting plenty of good gear elsewhere.

That said, my dogs go nuts for the cheap stuff and especially canned dog food, they get very excited when they see it. They must just like the chemicals.

    • Canned dog food smells delicious, I'm sure it's better than a lot of the crap we eat

  • Any cat food deals?

  • same price at Coles atm.
