I've been using this oil for my Mazda 3 for a very long time and I highly recommend this.

It's still better than the crap that they use at the dealers to save some money.

  • Quick ques regarding compatibility for cars approx 10 years old

Would this suite Kia rio 2012 model and Honda accord euro 2008 model? is there a site i can check for compatibility - always want to purchase the best oil for the car/age.

    I see reference to approval on European cars: BMW Longlife – 01, VW 502 00/ 505 00, MB Approval 229.3, 229.5.

    • You can search parts and fluids via car model on the Supercheap Auto site

    • I remember hearing something about synthetic oils not being good for older cars.

It may be best to wait for some expert in here to confirm before buying for a car from 2008 which may have a lot of kms on it.

      • Think it is more to do with using the appropriate viscosity as opposed to not using synthetic oils for older cars.
I use Shell Helix Ultra 5W-40 on my 16y.o. car without issue.

@Airborne99, I use this in my 2007 Honda Accord Euro.

You can check compatibility here http://www.datateck.com.au/lube/castr_au/

Thanks for post OP picked one of these up.

  • Thanks OP picked up two, cheers.

  • Does anyone know if this oil can be used in a Mercedes W204 diesel? My manual says 229.51, but this oil is only 229.5

A quick google is giving me conflicting info… some says yes, some says no

    Any experts here?

    • Says on the bottle "Not for use in diesel cars with DPF" or similar. Thread here about model specific dpf issues: Link Diesel oil is usually higher weight and has different additives specific to diesel.

      • I only saw the front label where it say's it's compatible with diesel engines, but failed to see the back label about the DPF.

Thanks mate! Saved me a very costly mistake!

        • Any recommendations on a 229.51 oil then? *
        • Here's a list of approved oil:

          https://bevo.mercedes-benz.com/bevolisten/229.51_en.html

          You're welcome.

          • @mini2: Thanks mini2… I've seen this list, but here is where I get confused. On this list, it says Castrol Edge 5W-30 is compatible for my car. Yet when I look on the back label of the oil, it says it isn't compatible for Diesel engine with DPF.

            That's why I'm so confused!

            • @alautm: Yeah, sheet 223.2 is now missing from that link. That would have shown the vehicles/engines that match to the oil recommendation. Supercheap has a DPF compatible 5w 30 Edge but it is $78. In general, their recommendation is for thinner/performance oil compared to normal diesel oil (15w 40 etc). So guess it's going to cost more.

            • @alautm: There are 2 Castrol Edge 5W-30.
The one for sale here and the long life one which is more expensive and low SAPS and is 229.51 specced
              https://www.castrol.com/en_au/australia/home/car-engine-oil/…

So the short answer is this oil on sale is not suitable for your diesel.

              • @Trojan: Thank you @hyaspty and @trojan

  • thank you

  • Awesome , will get one

Remember when these were $2 each? Pepperidge Farm remembers.

  • The API Rating is SL (Cars from 2004 onwards), the newest rating is SN (Cars from 2010 onwards). A better engine oil would be Shell Helix Ultra 5w30 which is $37 when on sale at Repco.

  • Damn i paid $45 a month ago for this.

  • bought it then realised it's non-trivial to do it oneself (you need to jack the car up). Not a handyman myself, there no saving to speak of if I still have to drive the car to the shop for the risky work. Does it still make sense to take your own oil and ask the auto shop to change?

    • Yes at that price. That’s exactly what I’ll be doing. Mechanic charges me a little more than that for semi-synthetic. He can charge me the labour, but no need to charge me for oil and I’ll get the extended duty cycle of synthetic. So you’re still ahead.

    • You don't need to raise the car for most oils changes AFAIK. Most cars will have the drain plug at the front. You just need a drain pan, drain plug gasket and filter. The benefit is that you could do two oil changes for the price of paying someone to do it (depending on vehicle and costs).
