Kindle - Sharing Books with GF (Amazon Household / Family Sharing)

I've just bought a Kindle paperwhite, also my GF the same one, before I bought I searched and seemed to think we could join the same "amazon household", to share books, but now I am pretty sure this feature is not available to AU amazon members, and only the US. We are actually currently both Prime members, with completely separate accounts.

Is there any easy way if I buy a kindle book, she can read it in her library rather than buying it a second time…and vice-a-versa? Ideally by having our own separate logins and not the same one…

Also, I am currently on AU Amazon/Kindle store, have bought 2 books, but wondering if I should've set up or migrated this to US Amazon?

Thirdly, I got my mum a Kindle as well, so any tips on how to unlock the most value out of these things in terms of apps, downloads, free e-books and the likes is greatly appreciated!

  • I have not looked into for ages (years) - but I seem to recall the Amazon Household being another US only feature :(

  • Probably one of the more frustrating aspects of kindle ownership. I’ve tried lending a book - a concept that’s allegedly permitted - only to be told (every time), “oh, sorry, you can’t actually lend out THIS title”. Haven’t tried for at least a year.

use calibre, and then just download the various ebook packs (NYT best seller lists for example), and then just convert it and away you go. Did it for my mum a while ago with 3000 books (took ages to convert and upload to though)

    • Care to share where to download those ebook packs from? :) thanks

Have a look at calibre, you can share books this way if setting up an account where you can be a household isn't an option.

You can also convert .epub books to .mobi to use on the kindle. It's good software even if you only use it for managing your ebook library.

    • Thanks for the advice. Do I just load my purchased kindle books from Amazon into my Calibre and somehow transfer them onto the other Kindle devices?

      • Hey sorry for the late reply. You can connect your kindle to the computer and copy whatever is on it to calibre. Then connect the other kindle and copy everything from calibre onto there.

side note - if anyone wants https://www.amazon.com.au/gp/product/B07NS63MP2?ref_=pe_2381… i have one.. you just need to pay for shipping. I bought it for my kindle, but it doesn't fit and amazon refunded me hte money

    • nice one, where are you located? What colour is it :)

      • I’m in Melbourne, it’s purple

        • Will pass, but thanks!

  • Thanks everyone.

This may be another noob question, but how do I download the book files from Amazon to my PC, so I can then load it to Calibre? It says Add Books but I have to browse to a directory and I can't seen to figure out how to download my purchased books from Amazon to my hard drive… :(

    • You can login to your Amazon account on your Kindle and the books should automatically be downloaded to your Kindle.

Only really need to use Calibre if you're getting your books from other sources.

      • I figured out in amazon I fonud: Manage Your Content and Devices, then click Content, then click a book and then Download & transfer via USB, I can then save to disk and then load it to Calibre. Following which a "plugin" I found can help with it and then I have not tested this yet but I believe I can then copy the book to my GFs Kindle manually through Calibre….

  • I don't know how… But when I bought my partner a Kindle… My library appeared on it. She is signed in with her account.
