Not so much for males; my neighbor is 79 years old, German background and got his 38 years old Asian wife pregnant twice already.

        She should hide his viagra.

Edit: … and the turkey baster, for good measure!

        • Correction: Viagra is for dysfunctional erections, pregnancy is for fertility.
They have to stop having sexual intercourse if pregnancy is an issue.

          • @LFO: He can't get her pregnant if he can't even get it up. No correction required.

            *whoosh :)

            • @[Deactivated]: For the likes of it yes, he does get it up.
Wouldn't have this one, his fourth wife otherwise … that's a big lot of money …

              Next:

        79 + 38 = Down Syndrome

        • +1

more likely, but still unlikely. I have a mate who's in his 60's who knocked up a 30 year old, ha.

Rod Stewart's average is 1 child per decade, so far so good.

        • +2

I had my perfectly healthy baby at 38. Many women now are having babies in their late thirties and 40s. There is increased chance of having miscarriage or one of the chromosomal differences like Down syndrome, but still more likely not to. There are also lots of children with Down syndrome who are very loved.

          • @morse: Yes genetics (and health) have a lot to do.

Some men and some women are "old" a lot earlier than others.

Ruling by age, by a number, is nonsense.

Congratulations, by the way!!! Boy or girl?
Bet your life has changed dramatically … for the very much better!!!!!

@LFO: We had a boy - and love him very much. Life with him is great although I don’t necessarily know if having kids is the be all and end all. There are lots of amazing people, living amazing lives without kids so my attitude has always been, what will be will be. The others in my mum’s group thought I as in my twenties and one of the “young ones”, yet there’s some people from my school year becoming grandparents. There are lots of mum's my age and older - but yes I’m on the older side.

          • @morse:

There are also lots of children with Down syndrome who are very loved.

True but there are many more children born with a disability who ends up in residential care because their parents no longer want or can look after them.

Source: I volunteer as a music and swimming instructor for children with disabilities. Most of them have little to no contact with their family. Some of the things I've seen and heard are truly heartbreaking, a far cry from all those insta-perfect pics on the 'gram and Facebook.

@[Deactivated]: Without going into my role and profession, I’ve also worked in the health and disability sectors and what you say is true, unfortunately some people with disabilities are not included as part of the family in the same way they would have been without that disability. I guess I’m saying it’s just not a reason to rule out having kids for those in their late 30s.

Depends on gender. As pointed out men really don't have much to worry about. You're either fertile or not. Potency may do down slightly with age but it can still remain high.

Now women, naturally speaking, have virtually no reproductive value after their early thirties.

      • +1

Not true. I had my baby in my late thirties without any help. Half my mum’s group is over 35. Only one in the group had any IVF at all and actually conceived naturally in the end. All bubs in the group born to the older mums are healthy and thriving.

Sandwich bag + freezer…this is OzBargain after all…

  • Wrong time to buy a freezer

You don’t need to freeze sperm. Total waste of time and money. Unlike girls, guys can have babies at literally any age. Getting it up when you're 90 will be more of a challenge than actually impregnating a woman. But don’t worry, there’s Viagra for that.

    • Came here to say this. Not literally ;-)

This is pointless for men, you can father children at any age.

Almost pointless for woman too, why would you want to be 70 at your kids 21st anyway?

Just have kids when nature intended, it is literally what we were 'designed' for.

    • +6

I would wager that there's a good reason for having kids early. Nature wouldn't demand it for no reason. I said this openly to a bunch of women at work and they got totally wrecked since they're all over 30. Hadn't seen them that mad since a few months prior when I said children of married parents do better than in life than children who come from single parent households.

      • @SlavOz lol that's a controversial topic these days, like talking about politics or religion

        • +2

Politics and religion are totally subjective and based mostly on personal opinions (coming from a religious person). I can understand why they'd be controversial but are we really heading down the path of having controversial facts or controversial medical data?

          Scary world lol

          • +1

@SlavOz: They're what I'd call "non-work topics". It's rarely productive to have that sort of conversation and you'd they'd likely be unhapppy.

          • +1

@SlavOz: Did you present a fact, or did you just state it without any supporting evidence at all?

hesitant to freeze or go through ivf as do not want twins.

    • You're getting picky now. Most kids would appreciate a sibling. I do understand though, you would like what you would like.

    • Most clinics will only transfer one fertilized egg and you have to give consent if you want more than 1 egg to be transferred.

    • Not sure why you’re being downvoted. Yes perhaps it is picky, but not wanting twins is reasonable, they are an insane amount of work. After 2 kids I can’t even fathom the work involved with twins.

  • I read Freeze Eggs/Spam momentarily, which I thought was unnecessary.

Men produce sperm. Women produce eggs.

    Prices quoted in other posts.

Men can reproduce most of their life. Please talk to a doctor about your particular concerns as their can be issues.

There is zero chance of a biological male getting pregnant. To find out success rates for females using frozen sperm, again, please consult a doctor.

  • Start by getting some ice cube trays. not sure next step.

I've had friends who've done it and ones who have also gone through IVF. Let me tell you, you better be very sure that you want kids and also be totally ok with losing all that money as well and not look back and regret it. You'd likely have to fork out 10-20k yourself, and then the IVF process is expensive as well.

Your post on this is 3 short sentences missing capital letters and grammar.

Do you have the energy for kids?

  • How does a man who can clean his own nails https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/517041 not have children already?

    • hey i also learn to wash behinds the ears at late stage too

  • World's overpopulated as it is. I'm sorry that's a no from me dawg.

    • no. . that's mean they need more for couple s to happen

  • I read on the news a while back, there was a malfunction of one of their machines and all the egg/sperm is gone for all. Just keep that in mind

getting old, bio clock ticking and needing to extending chances of getting pregnant..

I'm pretty sure there is no procedure at the moment that will increase your chances of getting pregnant, as a man.

    • Not with that attitude!

  • I've heard freezing ovum and IVF is extremely expensive, can be up to $15,000 in total with no guarantee to work.
That's why you should be skeptical of people treating their mid-late 20s as their last chance to have children, there is an industry surrounding the fear of missing out and it doesn't align 100% with the actual stats and science behind infertility.

I paid about $500 for my first year and about $250 for every 6 months.

At another clinic I paid $350 for the year.
