Opinion for 65inch / 75inch Smart TV

Hi Guys, thinking about getting a Smart TV. Hoping to take your opinion please. I've attached image for Sony 65inch and Samsung 65inch from Costco but thought:

  1. Take opinion which Smart TV for playing Youtube, Airplay, Netflix etc you would get for yourself

  2. Value for money in the 65inch to 75inch range

I would pick Sony over Samsung as preference. Value for money is a Hisense.

I would generally put a pretty low value on "smart" features
Get the one that looks the best to you. Budget?

  • Budget under $1500 if I could please

  • What are the model numbers you are looking at?

Down in that range, Sony or Samsung is pretty much the same, it's down to the OS and what feels better to you (Android TV vs Tizen). Both will do almost anything fine,

Personal view is to avoid Hisense, you're not spending a heck of a lot more for a much much better OS and TV experience from the more established brands.

We bought a Sony 65" late last year.

A major deciding point was Android which not only gives access to a huge range of apps but also the ability sideload many apps that are not available through Play Store for that device. Can also run a VPN to watch content normally only available in other locations.

We had a Samsung 55" which cost a small fortune at the time. Didn't have half the apps we needed and we purchased a chromecast but that was a hassle to watch certain shows.

So we just bought a TCL 65" model 65P8M for $760 a couple of weeks ago from JBhifi. It has android so we easily downloaded apps we use like Stan, Disney+, Hayu and Kayo in the future for sport.

The quality seems great for what we paid. Super impressed.

Personally I ignore the “smart” functions when TV shopping. I’d rather outsource those jobs to a device of your choice (like an Apple TV or Fire Stick) that is more easily swapped out over the (hopefully longer) useful life of the TV

    • I bought a Samsung (it was by far the best TV on offer in my price/size range) and it's kind of changed my mind. The convenience of everything just being on the TV had me really change my opinion on the importance of smart tv apps.

I'm not sure it would be the absolute driving force behind my selection of TV (that will always be the best panel I can get for games and sport) but I'd be willing to pay a bit extra for a well developed TV OS now whereas I would not have before.

      • Which Samsung did you get please and for how much ?

I got it last year, the NU8000. The RU8000 was the 2019 model, now the TU8000. But they've progressively made the models slightly cheaper while also removing features, so the TU8000 is a bit hobbled relative to the previous xx8000.

  • 2 weeks ago I purchased a SONY KD-65X8000G (65")from Costco. ( with $400 off ).
Good smart TV.valued for money. Recommend.

    • How much did it cost ?
