A properly fitted N95 respirator will block 95% of tiny air particles – down to 0.3 micron in diameter, which are the hardest to catch – from reaching the wearer’s face. But surgical masks, designed to protect patients from a surgeon’s respiratory droplets, aren’t effective at blocking particles smaller than 100 microns, according to the mask maker 3M. A Covid-19 particle is smaller than 0.1 micron, according to South Korean researchers, and can pass through a surgical mask.

    • So that means no medical protection product works on block of Covid-19?

It depends… Are they better than nothing - probably. Sort of like dust covers for air intakes, PC fans, etc. It will collect some dust and some dust will get through.

If somebody is infected and sneezes/coughs, then there is going to be plume of 'stuff'. Some Virus may be attached to heavy / bigger particles, like gobs of spit, bigger water droplets, etc. These are going to probably land onto the ground pretty quickly.

Some of it may get aerolized (sp?) and floating around - floated around in the air by airconditiong, wind, etc.

        https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2546863/
A study investigating the natural excretion of the FMD virus (25 to 30 nm in diameter) into the air by infected pigs, using a multistage liquid impinger sampler, showed that 65% to 71% of the virus-laden particles were over 6 μm in diameter, 19% to 24% ranged from 3 to 6 μm in diameter, and 10% to 11% were under 3 μm in diameter

The mask isn't impenetrable. You may get lucky and get some stuff hits the mask fibres and sticks. Some of the bigger water molecules will get caught.

Not sure if the 'raw' virus is actually floating around in the air. If they are, then they could come through the weave of the mask. Some will get stuck, some/most will get sucked through.

If you want to be 'safe', wear the face visors, eye goggles and very tight fitting n95 masks. The space suits are even better.

The mask won't stop you touching stuff with your hands and touching eyes/nose/mouth if you don't wash hands. The mask may stop you touching your nose/mouth. May not stop you rubbing eyes…

The mask will probably stop some Virus particles coming out if you are sick…

Health care workers with n95 masks have caught covid (maybe through eyes, or improper hand care, or bad luck). When the doctors take off the PPE, stuff gets flicked everywhere. Air conditioning may circulate stuff around.
17% of chinese health care workers got sick with face mask only.
7% of chinese health care workers got sick with n95.
        7%. N95 >> 17% surgical masks >> ???% no mask?

Where ??% is unknown. If you flip it around, n95% is 2-3x better than surgical mask and surgical mask is most likely better than nothing… A lot of these diseases if you live with an infected person, you are probably 50-100% likely to catch it.

        Ymmv…

That's true. But it's a bit difficult to get contacted the nude virus in the common community. They often combine with the droplet float in the air. I think a mask is a best single protection in the common daily life. Anyway, better than nothing, and at least protect the surrounding people. The result can be seen between Singapore and Hongkong. Confirmed case already reduce to 0 for few days when Singapore over 10K.

  • Maybe good enough to protect from common flu with double layers

Just sew your own. More environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the long run.
