New Laptop Recommendation for a Bit of Everything for under $1600

Hey everyone,
I am looking for an upgrade after using my laptop for 6 years. I want a system with the following requirements:

Under $1600 AUD
Good battery
RAM: 16GB
SSD: 512GB
Touchscreen preferred
Good trackpad, hate loose trackpads
Able to handle some gaming (LoL, CSGO etc)
Able to handle CAD, Photo editing etc
Don't want a full on gaming laptop design with RGB everywhere

Not sure if this is impossible in today's market, so I am willing to extend that budget a bit more.

Thanks!

  • Hmmm when you try to include the touchscreen capability the price usually jumps quite a bit.
I was just casually browsing JB with your criteria and came across this: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/microsoft-surface-pro-6-i…

It's on sale at the moment if you're willing to spend a few hundred more for full tablet touchscreen functionality.

Otherwise without the touchscreen this was what I came across: https://www.jbhifi.com.au/products/acer-nitro-5-an515-43-15-…

If neither of these are what you're after, maybe consider a second hand/refurbished laptop?

    Hope I helped!

    • Sure did help, cheers!

      • On top of this, I've noticed a few people are recommending the Dell XPS series. I recently got a Dell XPS 9575 (14inch, 4K) for $3k on the Dell website (sale). It's an amazing 2-in-1 laptop. I use it from note taking, gaming, graphic design and heavy web development. Haven't had any issues with it (except I wish the webcam was on the top!).
Looks like you may be able to get a lower spec model a little above your price range.

  • I think you're asking for too much for $1600.
Particularly touchscreen and ability to game on (i.e. a dedicated graphics card) are difficult to find together at low cost

    • Yes, I agree. Was just hoping for the slightest possibility that there could be something.

I have a dell xps 13 for more than 4 years now and been doing photo editing (Lightroom and Photoshop) and some video editing on premier. Video editing is not the best but nothing to complain about. They can be a bit pricy but have a look at the dell outlet, they have brand new ones (filter by as new) that are much cheaper and might fit in your budget.

It was possible around 6 months ago: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/522759
From my experience that laptop will fulfil all your requirements, but sadly the deal is over. I would suggest waiting for another deal like this if you can.

  • 20% on dell ebay shop…you might be lucky
