2011 Giro Ionos for $133.19 USD + Postage

42
CC20AP

The helmet itself is actually 50% off from $235 to $119, but unfortunately postage is $37.99. Even so, it's still a pretty good deal for a brand new Giro Ionos. I'd check out the apparel on sale as well and it may ease the sting of the postage. http://www.competitivecyclist.com/sale/

Edit: Helmet doesn't meet Australian Standard Sticker on them and is technically illegal. You may have problems with the police or insurance company if that was to be found out. From a safety perspective though it will protect your noggin'.

Sorry, I completely forgot about the AS stickers.

It wont have the Australian standards sticker on it so it is useless for racing in Australia. But if not planning to race its a bargain

Still illegal to use in public in Aus, for racing or any purpose.
No insurance coverage in any form.

Just picked one up for US$133.19 including delivery. You can use the code CC20AP for 20% off the item.

    • Hey n1une, I know its probably right in front of me, but where do I put this code? I'm up to the entering CC details and can't see it. Thanks

      • It's at the checkout where you see the 'Shipping Options'. It's just below the 'Payment Options', you can see 'Use Promo Code'. Great code by the way, I wish I knew about it when I ordered.

        • Thanks de_st1jlinator, I knew it would be somewhere obvious and I just wasn't looking hard enough. The code must just be for certain things as I tried it on a bike and it didn't change the price. Damn, that would have made the bike really cheap.

        • If you're looking at buying a bike from CC then you should also be mindful of additional tax on goods over $1000.

  • What's the difference between a $150 helmet and a $20 helmet? Does it give
More protection or is it an image or comfort thing? (serious question)

    • Basically all of the above.
It looks cooler and is very light and strong. The cheaper ones could probably actually provide more protection because they are heavier and made of denser materials. But you don't want to wear them when racing.

Also keep in mind that once you have a stack on one, you'll need to replace it. So a $150 helmet is a bit more costly to replace.

    • The protection is on par with a $20 helmet, all helmets need to meet a safety standards to begin with. What you're really paying for is comfort the Ionos provides.

  • If you get hit by a car wearing this helmet there is a chance that TAC will not pay out on anything as as said above it does not carry the aus standards sticker. Not as much of an issue when mountain biking etc, but its a no go for anything on the road. Is it really worth the ~$100 difference to loose much more than that if you are in an accident? Also if the police pull you over and check the sticker in your helmet (they do spot checks in melbourne and sydney CBD) its about a $160 fine

Would the police really pull you over even when you are already wearing a helmet?

      • They would rarely pull you over, but they do these spot checks on all commuters and check lights/reflectors, bells helmets etc. Its basically a cash grab but I do know people who have been fined

        • do these spot checks on all commuters and check lights/reflectors, bells helmets etc

bells on bikes are mandatory ???

how are people supposed to know this ?

    • I like that you neg based on a hypothetical situation, yet didn't take into account that you not guaranteed to live after the accident to get a payout from the tac!

in Melb CBD, bike helmets are only $5 from 7-eleven… and they conform to Aus. standards…

    • yes - and they are very uncomfortable compared to the listed helmet (or my cheaper Giro Stylus and Las Victory)

      • +1

ahhhhh… the good 'ol "comfort vs cost" tradeoff…

        shame we can't have both…

  • I think I will stick with my $20 Kmart helmet as it is a good fit and Im not cool enough to wear lycra so an expensive helmet wont fix tht.

  • Most of the cost is just to look "cool". Getting a reasonably cheap and adjustable/comfortable helmet is all you really need.
I have a bell volt that came with my bike and it's no better than my old $50 helmet other than looks.
