What to Know about Getting a Puppy and Training?

I'd like to get a German Shepard Puppy, I know I should adopt but I've got a 5 year old cat who I want the dog to not chase, and having the dog grow up around the kitty seems to be the best way to let them be friends.

This will be my first dog, and I'd like to ensure he is well trained and looked after.

There are plenty of resources online for this, the trouble is determining which ones are legit! Does anyone have any recommendations for training and generally making sure it has a happy life?

Thanks.

  • I can recommend the Mr Burns guard dog training techniques.

    • I don't know if they'll like bees in their mouth though…

Just a note that if you are doing this because you are home more now (wfh, etc) so have the time to train it properly, your dog may struggle when you do go back to work. Be mindful to leave it at home alone frequently so that shock doesn’t become a thing

If you are at home as much as normal, ignore my comment :)

  • As a positive dog trainer I can highly recommend Dr Ian Dunbars free ebooks google him he has two books online for free Before you get your puppy and After you get your puppy. Dogstar daily is his website. Please don't ask for training advice here. Get real advice from a professional.

It’s highly likely a puppy is going to chase your cat. Some adoption places test dogs to see if they’re cat friendly.

Zak George on youtube. He has so many puppy training videos, as a current owner who had to gone through some gruesome dog training couple years ago, that helped a lot. Also check out reddit r/puppy101, lots of great advices there and the community is super accepting.

    • Thanks, I'm on reddit for a fair bit of the work day anyway, so I'll subscribe.

    I see you're in Perth?
We used Alert DOG Training with our GSD and they've been great.
If you want to do a board and train type thing to take out the hard work, have a look/chat with Precision K9.

Robert Cabral has lots of good stuff on youtube if that's your thing.

Ours gets along fine with two rabbits and a cattle dog, so the cat will be fine in time, just may take some patience if you get a pup.

GSD's are very pack orientated so it will want to be where ever you are. They can get quite anxious if you are away for long periods of time. Ours gets a walk every morning but otherwise lounges around the house most of the day. Depending on the dog, be prepared to walk it every day, sometimes twice a day if they're full of beans or they will get destructive if they are bored and have a heap of built up energy.
Generally just spending time with it and doing things with it will ensure it has a happy life.
Buy from a reputable breeder as they can get problems with their hips, elbows and of course temperament.

    • Thanks for all the info. Yep, definitely planning on giving it plenty of attention and hopefully cuddles!
