New Laptop Hunt - Budget $1600

I am in the market looking for a new laptop. Budget is around $1600. Not too fussed if not 2 in 1, although touch screen yes.

I have been on the Dell eBay website with the 20% off and came across the -

-Dell Inspiron 13 i7 10th gen, 16gb ram and 512gb SSD
-Dell XPS 13 i5 10th gen, 8gb ram and 512 GB SSD

Also have been into JB hi-fi and been recommended -

-HP spectre x360 i5 10th gen, 8gb ram and 226 SSD
-HP envy 13 i7 10th gen, 8gb ram and 512gb SSD
-HP envy x360 amd ryzen 7-3700u, 8gb ram and 512gb SSD

They're all around the same price so I would like to ask what are your thoughts on these or would you recommend others that are equally as good if not better for the price?

UPDATE: Purchased the HP envy 13 i7 10th gen, 8gb ram and 512gb SSD 4k screen for $1400. Impressed so far.

  • All I can say about the HP’s is go in, and use the touchpad for 20-30 minutes.

If you can stand it, it’s a beast of a machine.

Gaming is average on it, even with the 1650, you’re just not going to get top line in a 2in1 system.

I’ve used the tablet mode perhaps 2x in the past 2 months I’ve had mine. I should have gone for something with a beefier GPU and more memory.

    • The design of the HPs did interest me, when I was in JB I had a bit of a feel with the touchpad and seemed okay, didn't take much of a notice though.

Yeah I think I'll be okay with traditional clamshell as I'd hardly would need the tablet mode

  • Check out the Lenovo education store, usually some great deals. Can get the Yoga C740 i7/16gb ram/512gb ssd for $1605 atm.

    • Okay thanks I'll check it out

  • What are you after?

Highest spec laptop you can afford?
    Premium build quality?
    Most portable laptop?
    Dedicated GPU for light gaming?

    • Mainly best for my buck. Easiest one to navigate through with really good specs.
Not going to do gaming on it

  • I'm running on my x360 aw0111tu from deal posted before. Impressed so far.

  • Merged from Need a rock solid laptop for under $1600

A friend's HP dv6 finally packed. Needs a new fan, but not worth the hassle.
    Anyway, looking for opinions.
He does not care about games etc, but he wants a rock solid laptop without know issues like overheating, whistling etc.
I was looking at T480,490,495 but open to suggestions.
Needs something that is quick, does not overheat and will not give issues for the next 3 or more years

    • Dell Inspiron or Latitude. Only because XPS can have coil whine issue.
Go Lenovo ThinkPad if you like that retro look. Just not the Yoga.
Dell Outlet or wait for good laptop deals

      • I have a work Dell Lattidute 7390 - overheats as hell. Looks great though.
Wife has XPS with a bit of whine, but otherwise is great.
He does not care much about the looks, although new Zenbook looks fantastic. Just not sure about durability and warranty

If you like this friend, stick with Dell. In my previous company we had 10+ years old Dell laptops (various models) and are still being used.
You eventually need to replace the HDD/SSD and the thermal paste in the future but Dell makes it easy to do so.
With ZenBook, you'd be lucky if the hinge didn't break first.

    • Microsoft Surface Laptop. Can't go wrong!

But nothing in the OPs budget
