That's right. It's not guaranteed. Typically if there was a critical security vulnerability, Google may issue a fix for the specific problem. Other OEMs have such policy too.
But as for general expectations of updates, don't put your hopes high.
Google did stop providing updates for Pixel 1 in Dec 19. Well, ok, 1 month longer than originally scheduled

I have a 7 year old phone with Android 10.
Bought this phone when it came out. Very happy with with. The missus is also happy with her XL version.
Meanwhile the Pixel 3a is still $649.
So now you've got flagships either side (Pixel 3 and 4) being offered for less than the midranger.
Hurry up 4a.
I see the appeal, but at that price, I wouldn't take the bait. $399 is more like where it's at.
I had my Pixel 3 sent in for warranty repair twice within the first 10 months. First fault was with the display & bluetooth @ five months. Got sent out a refurb which lasted for two months with a charging port fault and currently with Google awaiting return. Funny I've owned Nexus/Pixel phones before without issue. This one has been a POS! Also poor battery life that can barley last a full day at moderate use.
So about 95% negative reviews in the comments and 114 positive votes.

But quality of the product is much more debateable.

Haha loving the "I hate it" / "I love it" variances. Maybe Google has two factories and one of them produced absolute duds.

Clearly White is showing as low stock, 1 available as of now, enquire with your local JB as online stock info may not be accurate. Plenty of Not Pink version still available. There was a black version as well for this price, but JB has pulled down the page, don’t know if they were in low stock.

"No guaranteed Android version updates after 2021." is not the same as "NO MORE UPDATES AFTER 2021."
