Rego transfer from VIC to NSW

Hey, so you guys have been very helpful in previous recommendations (although I did buy a Kangoo).

I need help in regards to Rego transfer from VIC to NSW. I am picking up a car next week. What is the best way/easiest way to go about it?

There is conflicting information on Whirlpool forums and could not find anything recent of Ozbargain other than NSW to VIC which would be different.

    • trust the vic gov websites over whirlpool lol

There’s some non-conflicting info on the Service NSW website:

If you don't know how to Google then you can ring RMS or Service NSW and ask the same question so there is no room for any conflicting info.

This is why I hate posting anything on Ozbargain. Too many rude answers.

The links you have provided I have obviously already looked at them. It does not say how I can legally drive the vehicle back…

    Go for the negs….

If we can’t ask questions on this forum without receiving rude answers, what is the point of having a forum at all?? In life you will meet people who need guidance, even though in your opinion the answer is so obvious.

The point is to facilitate the endless and enduring pursuit of bargains.

Yes in the deals sections. Not so much in the Forum==> Automotive

      Yes it does.

If you’re buying or selling a Victorian registered vehicle (car, truck, motorcycle, caravan or trailer) and the vehicle will be garaged in another state by the buyer, the vehicle cannot remain registered in Victoria and should instead be registered in the new state within 30 days of transfer.

Ive bought from NSW and driven back to Vic 3 times and had no issues.

Rude answers? All I can see is people trying to assist you albeit frustrated you have done no research. You also never mentioned anything in your original post of driving the car back.

You didn't actually say you're planning on driving back. The only question I really see is how to transfer the rego which then got answered…

Make sure you look into insurance requirements otherwise you'll get roasted for the post if you have an accident.

      • Yes got insurance sorted thank you. And yes my mistake for forgetting to mention I would be driving it back. I did say I was “picking up” a car but perhaps wasn’t very clear.

    • It does not say how I can legally drive the vehicle back…

This is also NOT the question you asked in your original question…

To many Whirlpool opinion shoppers. Don't get the info you want to hear, so complain and bite back at everyone.

therefore….you can drive it back, no problem…and have 30 days to transfer the rego to NSW

      Bad information.

If OP already owned the vehicle and it was in their name, yes, but OP is buying a new car (to them), therefore they have 14 days to transfer it into their name in Vic, which VicRoads wont do unless OP has a residential address/Vic license and would require a RWC.

It would also be unusual for a dealer to sell the vehicle registered to an out of state buyer, as the dealer cannot transfer it into the interstate buyers name unless OP has a license from VicRoads. Possibly a private sale?

Also, if a vehicle is to be garage permanently in NSW, interstate registration may be deemed as the vehicle being unregistered. So, if OP cannot prove they have a valid reason for why their car is registered in Victoria, but garaged in NSW, they may get hit with with fines.

So, OP, that's what you get for information shopping. You get poor advice that you're happy with. Maybe you can screenshot @barbarella's information and produce it if you get pulled over.

Important to note that a vehicle that has not been registered previously in NSW will need to be Blue Slipped, as the different state registration departments aren’t linked.
In other words as far as RMS is concerned the car doesn’t exist. Get a Blue Slip, rwc, purchase receipt, 100 points of ID and a book to read while you wait at your local RMS office.

  • Is it already registered?

If not, get a unreg permit from Vic. You are allowed to drive it back and then register it in your home state. Bring as much stuff as you can to prove you are doing a legit trip as you might get some attention from the HWP… E.G.. proof you have gone to VIC to buy the car (eg receipt from buying car, receipt if you are staying overnight in VIC from a hotel).

Kangoo - get NRMA premium roadside assist for the drive back…..

That’s over 50% of the cost of the vehicle. It would be an economic write off just buying the road side assistance package. :D
