At this size it's a great arm workout as well.

I have a Lodge Cast Iron pan at home - I love it

      Your one is 5cm smaller.

      • +20

        That escalated quickly…

      • 2 inches extra is a lot.

        • every inch helps

    • +4

It's made in china , prefer not

      • +5

thanks for pointing that out, giving you a +
i'm not too fussed on the country of origin, but i am alittle misled in that the Company is called "Fresh Australian kitchen"
and i thought it was Australian made

pays to read the fine print!

        • Look what they write in the description of another pan also on Amazon:

"As the only full line of American-made cast iron cookware, Lodge boasts quality that has been unmatched for over a century."

And then it is made in China.

          https://www.amazon.com.au/dp/B00008GKDG?smid=A4XRJ8S0WXSO0

          • @Lysander: Where did you see the made in China info on that? I know their enamelled ones are made in China…

            • @Dealhunter967671: Not on that one but the one in this deal.
If the say the full line of cast iron cookware is US-made I expect every single piece to comply to that statement.

I certainly won't ever buy that brand again - rather pay mre for quality and health safety.

          • +3

@Lysander: That's wrong. It's all made in USA

            • +1

@dassaur: Sorry, referred to wrong link. The Fresh Australian one is made in China. But FDA (US agency) approved allegedly.

      • +4

Then you probably have to throw out most of your stuff at home lol

    • +3

This one, without the long handle, is great if you want to be able to use it in the oven.

The alternative answer is: get both.

Personally grabbed a chain mail scrubber @ $17.99 + 5 piece kit @ $178.75 (Local stock) here for a good deal IMO:
    Amazon

    • That 5 piece combo usually $95 ish when it's on sale. $178 is too expensive

      • If people are happy to spend $38 on 1 pan, I figured looking at pricing $178 for 4 pans plus lid is an avg unit price of $35.60 a piece.

The $95 price I saw on camelcamelcamel as well, but it’s not that price now and who knows when it will be with the AUD/USD Rate and logistics costs as they are?

    • +1

I didn't know that 'chain mail scrubbers' existed before your post but looks perfect to clean our cast griddle pan.
Got one for US$2.16 via AliExpress.

i bought this one combined with the 8" ($19.69) from here to get me free delivery

I am waiting for the 12" skillet to drop in price. How can I set up a price alert for that? I got the 10.25" for ~$35 delivered a year or so ago so can't justify $85 for the 12"

  • How to find US shipped items to add for free deliver?

    • Buy another one of these - i think u can use it as a lid

    • When you search click on the left to filter to "Prime Imports into Australia"

When you see the items, it might now show the imported option as the primary one, you may have to choose your buying option

  • +2

I like that it has handles on each side - there's nothing worse than when your hands have mismatched burns.

  • Any good deal on a lodge carbon steel skillet? Looking for something lightweight to replace my Teflon coated skillet

  • What's better for steaks, this or the ribbed one?

    • +2

IMO this. Ribbed ones don't have enough contact area to cook properly.

  • What are the uses of this pan ? tempted to buy but not sure what to cook in it :)

    • +1

Steaks and deep dish pizza are two that come to mind!

    • Anything that is not acidic, although once you have a solid seasoning built up even that would be OK.

I haven't used my CI for a while (switched to something lighter, and superior IMHO, and Aussie made - though more expensive) but when I did I used it for EVERYTHING: frying any protein, pancakes, eggs (with the right temperature control and oils), pizza, roasting, fritatta. They are great. My only concern would be the quality of the iron used in manufacture. Check out the castiron sub-reddit

      • Heya what's the brand you use now

        • +4

solidteknics.com. They actually have another Kickstarter just launched for their new 21cm iron pans (AUS-ION), which is how they launch all their new products. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/solidteknics/solidtekni….

Their ION stuff is great and indestructable. Cast iron will crack if you drop it, this stuff is wrought iron and will just bounce. Their Noni range is a bit more expensive (No Nickel stainless steel) but really popular too.

          • +1

@webified: I'll check them out thankyou

            • @otter-raptor: If they are in your price range you will not regret it, especially with the prices on that Kickstarter. They really are solid, multi-generational cookware.

I bought the 30cm skillet but sometimes wish I went with the 35cm BIGGA. The long handles on the 30cm means it won't fit in my oven.

              • +1

@webified: I was planning to pick up a 8 inch lodge to make early breakfast for one when going to work early and I think the 21 cm would.be perfect( though prices higher) thanks a lot mate

                • @otter-raptor: You're welcome. Have you seasoned cast iron before? Biggest tip I can give you: when it says to apply a small amount of oil, do that and wipe it off as though you are trying to get it all off. You want the thinest layer possible.

I also keep my pan smooth by scrubbing it with steel wool. It takes off any burnt bits and bad seasoning, leaving behind the good stuff and a very shiny smooth pan. You'll also need only half the heat you normally would.

Enjoy, and check them out on FB.

                  • @webified: Yes I've learned it after a lot of mistakes :) I do smother it with oil at times and then let it cool and then clean it with a paper towel to clear the excess

After getting my Lodge griddle to make crepes I can't go back to non stick , will try the Aus-ion next :)

  • Weird that I just watched a 'how its made' cos youtube put it in my recommendations.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RM5YRNxv0aM

  • Has anyone tried to season their brand new lodge pan before?

    If so, any tips?

    Thanks heaps xx
