Replace Router/Modem looking for suggestions/options

Hi all,

Here's my Scenario, want to replace the original IINET Router/Modem (TG789 V2, FTTN, 3 years old) as it keeps cutting Wifi for some reason.

I'm open to:
- use the existing TG789 as standalone Modem and buy a Wifi Router
- get a Modem/Router combo that works with the existing Internet
- buy a Modem and Router

3 options I'd like to see:
- Wifi 6 (futureproof?)
- VPN (not a must)
- USB and/or Sdcard extension for network storage

Budget - Ozbargain

Any suggestions/opinions/input is much appreciated. TIA

Tg789 uses a broadcom chipset for modem and i believer is still a recommended option for the modem side of things.

use the tg789 bridged and just buy whatever wifi router you like. It is always better.
Even the great router companies like asus make dud devices when the modem and router is combined. They dont get as frequent firmware updates and dont have 3rd party firmware.

  • Thanks, any brand/brands I should avoid?

Another option: turn off wifi on tg789 and replace with a wireless access point.

  • just checked AP's, not a lot of options there. Guess Im going with a Router. Cheers

    • Did you look at Ubiquiti APs?

      • just did thanks, the price range is same as a Router.

Ubi APs price range is the same as a consumer grade router, but their reliability and support is business grade. Your money, your choice, but you should consider more than just price if hassle free Wi-Fi is your goal.

        • TG789 modem is a good combo with Ubiquiti APs.

Synology or QNAP for network attached storage.

access point wise: the unifi stuff is great, they have routers and things as well
routers: the asus rt-ac86u / rt-ac68u have good support
the tplink stuff is cheap and cheerful

  • That is what I'm looking at the moment, Asus ac68u/ac86u or Netgear equivalent. Turns out Wifi6 is not fully developed at this stage, so I decided to drop that and buy something different.
