Sonos will probably brick this soon with the release of the arc. Will never buy any of their products again.

      Great comment #sigh.
Sonos aren't bricking any products, have a decent read first ;)

The beam/base/bar aren't losing support yet.

Although this is true @deva22, having to run the old kit and new kit on 2 separate zones with no integration in the future (at an undefined point with a SW update) has put me off personally from purchasing new gen product. Consumers would have to replace all their products or relegate them to those 2 independent setups.

        • I have one, they are decent, and considered S2/current gen. They definitely have a purpose.

        • +1

They should provide some update to the Playbar or at least something to bridge it to the latest tech.

        • Damned if they do and damned if they don't. On the other side many complains about not supporting Atmos, High Res and Lossless audio.

Many of these legacy products were released 10 years ago or more.

Personally not aware of any other tech based provider stretching out the life of their hardware for this long, especially at the price point / feature set they operate in.

    • Mate. At least get your facts right before bitching about it

I've never seen that number before.

  • Man, I hope I could get the SUB with that price

New Sonos products released this week.

These ones might go further down on price with clearance soon.

  • I just bought two google max and connecting with TV.. I wonder which one will be better

    • How do you have them connected to the telly ? Is there any audio lag when watching something ?

      • I am still waiting for my delivery.. I will connect through cable with splitter

    • +1

The playbase will be much better compared to the max for TV use.

If anyone is seriously considering this, I would proceed with caution and do your own research.

With the release of Sonos Arc, Playbar and Playbeam are essentially discontinued products (No formal announcement that I know of, but neither are on the Sonos website anymore).

If you like to receive support for as long as possible, it's best to either consider the Beam or buy the Arc instead.

When S3 comes around in the not too distant future, don't be a fwit and complain about being blindsided.

    • -3

Especially since the Sonos Arc seems to be targeting a $799 release price

    • +1

I think you meant play base rather than beam? beam is still on the website.

      • +2

ah crap, my bad, I meant the playbar and playbase (this deal).

Yes, the Beam and Arc are the current Sonos line up

    • Playbar and Playbase are superseded but the Arc is intended to be the "big brother" to the Beam. So the Beam shouldn't be considered a discontinued product. Beam and Arc are very different.

So tempted by the Arc but not at that price!

  • Reading all these comments about losing support in the future etc. if I were to buy this, use it with my LG C9 and not use other Sonos products, is it likely I'm losing any functionality in the future?

    • -1

Ignore those posters. You will not 'lose' any functionality and it will work as it does for as long as it works. You may not receive upgrades or enhanced operations later on, but thatwill not impact on what it does today.

    • +1

Don't ignore these posters but try to "understand the problem". :)

Sonos was always advertised as "multi-room audio system". And for me this the greatest feature.
And that's what is getting broken with "legacy devices support changes".

If you have a single Sonos device you are not going to use "multi-room" feature anyway…

But my personal opinion (do your own research :))…
If you need just a soundbar for your TV and you don't have and your are not going to get any other Sonos products…
There are other soundbar options available.

Picked one up this morning while everyone was leaving the comments. The 65" C9 looks a little strange as the base hangs over both ends (B9 would be better) The C9 is so low that owners have very few options when it comes to soundbars (pretty much none) This is one of the only things available. Magic remote won't work with the volume because its Bluetooth. I have the non-magical remote handy ($15 from the good guys) and it works fine.
Sound is great and I don't care about DTS. The sound is clear and the bass is fine. Plenty of volume and the sound is bright. Sound separation is better than expected. Easy to connect and get working. Sound works with everything I have plugged into the TV. Sonos functions work fine. I don't use multi room so I don't care. I like the way the sonos stuff sounds and this is no different. Happy with the purchase. Happy I was able to pick it up within an hour locally.

I have a Playbar and the key thing that irks me is the restricted codecs that Sonos choose to use. I don't think they have any compatibility with DTS and so everything I play from Plex that has that ends up needing to be transcoded.

From what I gather Sonos have never had any interest in supporting DTS (at least for the legacy products, not sure about their new range).

The Playbar is a great bit of kit but limited codec support was disappointing.

      Yes!
I remember when Sonos released Playbar they were promising DTS support with firmware upgrade.
Until DTS Inc. requested licence fee based on total number of Sonos devices sold by that date.
At that point Sonos change their mind to "actually, we never wanted DTS".

Lack of DTS codec support was the only reason I didn't buy Playbar.

      • +1

Not sure about the history here, but DTS is almost dead when you look at all of the streaming providers and new releases.

Also a lot of high end TV's, Amps, Players and even Kodi can transcode DTS to DD or whatever you need.

I guess a bit like the format wars where technically DTS was slightly better but lost out to better marketing and licensing.

        • Sounds like their greed is killing them (DTS). :)

    • Do you have Chromecast or Kodi? I’ve noticed that both of these can process DTS with no need for transcoding. On the other hand, my Samsung TV‘s audio needs to be set to PCM if I use the built in Plex player. I’ve the Sonos Playbase for audio output.

  • probably discounted because the playbase is getting replaced by the ARC next month. ARC will support Dolby Atmos but still no DTS or multichannel PCM.

  • Anyone buy a black playbase and decided they don't want/need it? I could be interested. Only seems to be white available in store..
    Cheers
