B450 boards not compatible with new Ryzen 4000 series (Update: AMD Reversed decision)

So the news has just come out that the cost effective B450 series boards aren’t compatible with the new Ryzens coming out at the end of the year . Only X570 and the new B550 will . Be warned!

This decision has been reversed. Several media outlets are reporting the news

Is it not able to be updated by firmware?

  • Luckily I got a x570 ITX from CA for a steal right before COViD.

  • I was tossing up between the B450 and X570 when building my 3600 PC and went B450. Seems like I made a bad decision… That X570 Tomahawk looks extremely enticing right now.

I feel you. I was tossing up b450 myself, only went X570 as I had to have wireless AX built in .

Welp. So much for making this claim.

I knew AMD would pull off something like this, one of the main reasons I decided to skip B450 when my B350 became faulty and go right onto the X570 chipsets.

The timing is also not good since R3 CPU's just released and people might be buying B450 MAX motherboards in anticipation that they were building a future-proof midrange PC only to find that their choice of motherboards may not be so great afterall.

    • I think the R3 CPU's are awesome value and I am struggling to see what new gen CPU's will offer for the person interested in a mid-range build. (esp when you factor the extra cost of x570 board)

Unless the 4000 is much cheaper for equivalent performance I wonder if people wanting mid-tier system will stick to B450 and R3?

Very curious to see what the 4000 series will offer

Don't need a new board anymore, current cheap-cheap B450's will support 4000 series.

        • Lol. Oops. Im im living 2 weeks back in time

  • There may be some hope:

The article notes that XMG will enable 4000 series compatibility on the B450 chipset. Now is the time to lobby your respective motherboard manufactures.

I think I have no hope, being on a X370, but it has taken me through generations of CPU, and, I think I might just wait for the AM5 switch over, and make that my new starting point…

I'm not fussed by this. I built a cheap PC out of cheap AMD parts. If I wanted to upgrade I'd be choosing a Ryzen 5 or 7 from the 3000 series. I have a crappy Asrock 450 steel legend.

450 boards are cheap. I'm also of the feeling that many companies will pull a miracle and support the new 4000 series anyway.

I get that. I think the problem lies with those top the line B450 motherboards that run close to X570 pricing, and yet they can't be upgraded…..

      • i didnt even buy a cheapo 450… i bought a mid spec

my question is why people even bother to buy an expensive 450

just move to a 570 lol

I think because high tier b450 motherboards would include things people want (WiFi, good vrm cooling, overclocking options, bios GUI, etc) whereas a bottom tier X570 wouldn’t (necessarily).

          • @blergmonkeys: i bought a bottom tier X570 ITX, as there were only 3 ITX (Asus, Aorus and Asrock) at the time. Got the Aorus for less than 300.

  • Good thing I waited til b550 rather than paying for the b450 upgrade with techfast

  • Really awful that those pretty new MSi B450 MAX mid-range boards (e.g. Tomahawk MAX and Mortar MAX) are left out in the cold.

They performed very well and MSi increased the capacity of the BIOS chips as part of the MAX revisions so they could potentially support larger BIOS versions for future CPUs

  • "AMD executive confirmed to Tech Deals that they could support Zen 3 on older motherboards, but decided not to do it “for business reasons”."

is he an ex intel exec?

  • AMD reversed course.

Zen3 will now work on 570/450.

    • X470 and 450.

  • Lmao I just stumbled upon this thread and thought they then stopped supporting 400 series, was about to have a heart attack.
