Flybuys/Coles is Requesting Mobile Number

Just noticed Flybuys is requesting valid mobile number otherwise you are not able to login let alone redeem points. I myself is reluctant to do so but I still have tens of thousands point waiting to be redeemed. What's your opinion on this? I would probably cancel my account if I didn't have that much points.

Let’s start by confirming your mobile number

Easier than typing in my 16 digit flybuys number to log in. Doesn't Woolies Rewards do the same thing? Half the time when I log into my dad's account, it sends a verification code to his mobile number

    • It's 2FA so you have to type your flybuys number, password as well as a verification code that they send to your mobile every single time you log in.

      • I thought the point of providing your mobile number was so you could use your mobile number/e-mail to log in rather than your flybuys number. Boo at that rate!

  • That is a dead link. Please update.
Your number will be used to verify and also receive 24/7 marketing calls :P

  • What if you don't have a mobile?

Could use The Rejection Line but it looks like the code is also censored going by that one from PayPal

Bit annoying, I manage multiple flybuys account in our household. Not sure if it will let me set them all to the same #.
Also not sure I can really trust flybuys. Prob start getting spam if I use a legit number.

  • I supplied my number reluctantly and it's never asked me for a SMS code to login since. So I don't think it's for 2FA.

The issue I have the login page continuously wants facebook access. The firefox facebook container goes nuts any time I type anything or click the login box. Which doesn't allow me to login when I say no.
I have to type the login stuff out in notepad and copy and paste and tap enter twice on the keyboard. lol :S

    • try a new browser?
      does it ask again?
if they only ever ask once, I can use some random Catch sim that I won't be using again haha. Although I may end up being stuck in the future.

      Don't like this.

      • A different browser seems to confuse it. I get the login screen completely fine. Next page my.flybuys.com.au/dashboard but it's completely blank. Seemed to log me in but decided to go nope no access for you! I guess that is a pretty decent security feature. :p

Flybuys and Woolies Rewards both have my phone number, I have never been spammed by either of them.

I just redeemed via app… App is still working without a phone no.

Is it to weed out all the fake/multiple accounts? Can't say I blame Flybuys after joining the loyalty card pages on social media, so many people making multiple accounts in non-existent names, pets names etc so they can be greedy with claiming multiple offers and freebies.
I can understand having a card in partner's name & then selecting the best offer, or even both offers if it's a low 4 week spend for 10000 points etc, but not juggling many multiple fake accounts.

    • I doubt flybuys will be strict on it. Many other websites allow one phone number linked to up to 5 accounts.

I think it is ok for now but later they will tighten it up. On the other hand, if they tighten this, they will lost millions of members so it won't looks good on their book

It's not too hard to get multiple burner phone numbers for situations where you don't want to give your real phone number. (I have 4 burner numbers.)

A $5 Aldi Mobile Sim has 365 day expiry & included $5 credit, and you don't need to put in any additional top-up when activating.

Edit: To avoid having to insert the sim every time you want to login to the account, you can use an app like Multi Parallel to create clones of the Flybuys/Woolies Rewards app.

hmm, had never heard of that app. will check it out.

        • Xiao Mi phones come dual apps function.

    • Burner SIMs are no good without burner phones otherwise all your numbers can be linked.

I keep writing to Flybuys complaining. There is absolutely no reason to collect mobile phone numbers except to spam and leak the number like Facebook.

The fact they are locking existing customers out of their accounts until they provide a mobile number is dreadful.

SMS authentication is simply the very worst form of 2 factor authentication. It cannot be used if you're outside local coverage even if you have Internet. It should never be offered as the sole means of verifying a login.

    • Yes, Woolies is much better, at least they give you the option of using an email address. I think they just want to limit the number of accounts people can set up.
