  • Wrong price on the Pirate Life sours, website says $11

The Pirate Life was on Member Offer last month as well (I picked some up for $10 a few weeks ago - can confirm it’s $10 in my area).

FWIW, I didn’t really rate it. A bit bland and watery…not the most flavourful sour.

    • +3

What sours would you recommend? I was really against them at first but they've been slowly growing on me. I had this passion acai on tap and thought it was quite refreshing, I can't get into the super sour-ey ones.

      • +2

Boston raspberry gose if you're in WA

        The Stomping Ground sours are a nice place to start;

        Hope sours are pretty good as well;

        And their imperial if you want a bit more kick;

        • These all look tasty, I'll try and hunt some down.

The regular Colonial Sour, with the handy big mouth can, is a very approachable sour that has good flavour depth and pretty broadly available.

Boatrocker makes plenty of good sours, but a lot don't suit cans (Miss Pinky really just tastes like the aluminium from the can), so look for bottles if available.

        • Thanks, I think I've see the Colonial at my local. I'll give it ago. I don't think they have Boatrocker but I'll check out a few of the specialist places in my area.

        • +1

          +1 for Colonial Sour

        • +4

Agree with what you said about colonial sours, great starting point and solid brew, but saying that something tastes like the aluminum from the can is complete BS because all food grade cans are coated. Beer in a can is always closer to the original brew because there's no light exposure. The aluminum flavour is psychological.

          • +1

@Beefking: Fair point, I was being a bit facetious.

But something about lighter flavoured sours doesn't seem to agree with cans (that I've tried). I drink plenty of Boatrocker from the barrel room and bottles, and the canned sours had something off - no, I'm not suggesting it was aluminium particles.

And I'm a proponent of canned beer and anything that makes sours more available, so if there was anything psychological, it should have been pushing the other way. But could always just be bad luck on the few I've had, albeit different venues and brewers. No issues with fuller bodied sours.

But hey, if in doubt, try it. Better than not trying it.

I’m not the best person to ask - I usually drink stouts and porters, and only drink sours randomly when there is nothing else on tap that interests me! I don’t really remember any names (I would probably need to see the labels).

The only other one I’ve bought recently is the Bridge Road Brewers Mayday Hills Table Brettanomyces Sour - I liked that one!

Only other one off the top of my head that I’ve had recently was Wildflower x Ester Daily Bread (sourdough sour ale) - that was great!

I also had a tart raspberry sour recently (just before lockdown), but nfi what it was!

And everything I’ve had from La Sirene, I have enjoyed - can’t remember specific ones sorry!

I’m probably in a similar “starting to explore” sour beers stage (I’ve always enjoyed them, just haven’t dedicated myself to exploring them), so sorry I can’t give any other suggestions! :)

Btw, don’t get me wrong, I find the Pirate Life perfectly drinkable - just didn’t really knock my socks off, so not something I would buy a slab of. If someone offered me one, I definitely wouldn’t turn it down! :)

Thanks, I'm a bit more of a seasonal drinker and usually prefer porters and stouts in winter. My go to is the zywiec porter as it's super tasty and quite cheap for what you get. Coopers best extra is a regular too.

I'll try the other Sours you mentioned here. Looks like I'll be putting together my own personal tasting session with all these recommendations!

          • @GrimCheaper: I’ve been getting into stouts and porters lately, I’ll have to give Zywiec a crack. A few I’ve had recently and loved are Temptress Choc Porter, Ballistic’s Mexican Hot Chocolate Stout and Dainton’s Cherrywood Smoked Rye Baltic Porter.

            Anyone got any other recommendations?

            • +1

@Pulseidon: Exit Milk Stout or Exit Double Milk Stout.
Belching Beaver Peanut Butter Milk Stout.

Moon Dog’s Milk Stout was disappointing.

            • +1

@Pulseidon: Highly recommend Founders CBS & KBS, if you havent tried them. Or even the regular Breakfast Stout (anything by them should be good!).

I had the Modus Operandi Silent Knight Porter the other day, which I quite liked. And one of the Evil Twin Aun Mas Jesus Imperial Stouts (can't recall which one).

Also had the Stillwater Critical Thinking Imperial Stout, which I remember being pretty interesting.

Sorry, my memory is very short term with beer names - probably from drinking too many imperial stouts! aha. (Need to go back to my photos on my old phone to jog my memory!)

Edit: Sorry, it was the Mikkeller Kaffestout I had recently, not the Evil Twin (although I have had that before). Had to look up the labels! aha

              • @caprimulgus: I saw a lot of Imperial Stouts when I was last at my local craft beer bottle shop. What are they like?

                • @sween64: They are great! Imperial stouts are stronger and more flavourful than other stouts (more alcohol/hops/malt). I believe the name comes from the style of stouts made for Russian royalty, that were generally much stronger than others.

The sort of beer you sit down to really enjoy as a beer. Rather than a social beverage to get drunk - although the high alcohol content means it does that rather effectively too! :)

      • +2

Highly recommend white mischief by garage project. It is what started me on the sours.

      • +1

So my intro to sours last year is very hard to get (limited run), but it’s the 8 Wired Cucumber Hippy. It’s from NZ and if you ever see it on a menu some place, buy one!

      • +1

Give La Sirene - Citray Sour a go, won't be dissapointed

    • Big fan of the Pirate Life Sour - I've bought 4 packs on 3 occasions in the last few weeks using this special (obviously extended) and was regretting not stocking up at those prices (only have a couple of cans left). I'll be sure to pick up more. I think it's $11 in NSW due to return and earn although that only gets you 40c back…

    • @caprimulgus. Agree,Pirate is indeed a tad bland and in my opinion very watery. Not at all a flavourful sour. It might be good for those looking for a light beer with a twist. It was my first taste of a sour and was disappointed. Looking forward to something with more flavour.

  • +1

Seems it’s $11 for the sour in queensland. Picked up a few of the 4 packs. Not the best sour out there but it’s nice.

  • Beerfarm do some awesome sours as do Batch.

  • No pirate gags? Disappointed ozB lol

    • +10

There were but they got deleted.
      They were rated RRRRRRR.

  • Good deal to stock up the beer fridge, cheers

  • Pirate Life is a bit of a pisstake given how much they charge and that they only sell it in packs of 4 (for the same price as a pack of 6 similar beers would cost).

Bought a 10 pack of some random Moon Dog beers from Aldi on the weekend for $25, quite nice for a generic quasi craft beer (which is all Pirate Life is). will probably grab 1 each of the cricketers arms too for shits and giggles. thanks OP!

  • Is it just me or is sour beers reminds me of Cider.

    • +2

It's just you. Nothing like sour.

  • +2

The Pirate Life is a good 'entry level' sour if you'd like to make your first steps in that direction. Has some flavour (but not heaps) and isn't going to punch you in the face with too much sourness. I actually really like it as a post-mowing the lawn beer on a hot day - very refreshing drop and only 3.5% so not knock you around too much. Definitely worth grabbing if you're 'sour curious' at that price…

    • +2

"post-mowing the lawn beer on a hot day" :)

I've been having some post going for a run. Very refreshing. I tried sours for the first time last year at a bbq (South West Sour) and thought they were OK but didn't like it enough to buy my own until trying them again when I was really thristy

      • +1

Absolutely. May have also used them for post-cycling 'hydration'… :-)

Hoegaarden 4 pack is for $10. A great wheat beer for the price of it!

    • +2

Have been getting cartons of this consistently under $50 (as low as $38.40) through OzBargain deals so keep an eye out for those!

      • Wow a 24 pack for that price is amazing. Enlighten me please!

        • +1

Search Hoegaarden to see previous deals, usually buy through CUB eBay with discount code and free delivery!

  • Looks like Modus Operandi Sonic Prayer IPA is still on members offer from last month as well ($18 for a 4-pack in my area).

Not a bad drop that one! OP, I suggest adding it to the deal list! :)

    • $21.99 in SA

  • Cricketers Lager & Pirate Life Sour have both ended.

    • Weird. Thanks.

      • I know… I wanted to try the sour but too slow.
