Fetch TV Alternative

I have iinet subs that I'm going to disconnect in order to join Aussie broadband.

If I'm not mistaken, the fecth tv box cannot work with another ISP, and therefore it is just a useless box.

This is why I'm looking for another alternative PVR. Obviously it has to be cheap. I'm open to any suggestions, including building diy raspberry pi or similar, as long as it works very well.

Thanks mate, but this doesn't record or have up to date TV guide.

      • Oh, I didn't know people still watched TV. Let alone record it. My bad.

@[Deactivated]: I would probably say vice versa? There's nothing on TV but garbage 'reality shows' and non-stop ads with repeated old shows sprinkled in between.

Level up and control your own media and watching experience. Whether you choose legit streaming solutions or your own Linux ISOs.

  • Do you just want watching, or record too

I record a lot, often multiple channels at once. This is where I love fetch. I hate fecth limited hard drive and non expandable usb. Also it's rather slow.

      • Out of interest, are catch up apps impractical for your situation?

        • +3

          Never use them.

The nice thing with fta pause record is I can just turn it on and see what's on, if I like it I record the series.

Sometimes I do plan when I know shows I like, but most of the time I just want to watch whatever.

      • Yeah.. I'm in the same boat. Not for me, but for a family member whose stuck in their ways. Fetch was brilliant when we had it, very slick.

Sad to say that I haven't found much in the way of options, and the stuff that is out there, isn't cheap. Main device I'm watching is the HDHomeRun CONNECT, in either dual or quad tuner configuration. On paper it's good, a network tuner that can broadcast TV channels to any device on the network, but I fear it would take quite a bit of fiddling around to get it setup so that it was idiot friendly.

        • I was looking for this but can't find the item in Australia.

@[Deactivated]: Scorptec (aussie computer store) sell it. They have an ebay store that has it too

If it worked alone I could probably swing $400 for a once off expense, but the bloody vultures want a subscription for the recording ability, and then to really get it working you need icetv, which is another subscription fee. Where does it end..

@outlander: Hmm yeah way too expensive.

I wish someone jailbreak fetch tv. Can you believe this thing has been around so long and locked with such limited features?

              • @[Deactivated]: That's my dream too =)

I wish I knew hacking. And that hacking was easy.

    Foxtel Now

    Edit: can’t record tho

    • Thanks, I love foxtel channels. But they are expensive. This box combined with a basic pvr should be good I think. Except that it uses more hdmi ports.

Aussie Broadband also offers Fetch TV Services

Can bundle with your nbn services.

    • thanks!

You can also just become a "Retail" fetch customer and buy your own Fetch Mighty. I'm not sure of hwo the money works out, but that is what we have (1 x mighty in the lounge for recording etc + 1 x mini in the bedroom that we can watch the recordings stored on the Mighty).

    • That is ideal scenario, but really I don't want to buy another box that is the same.

Can't believe how this thing still not jail broken

      • Technically, when you leave the service you're supposed to return the box, and then Fetch uses it in refurbished units. But many times the ISP doesn't bother/forgets to ask for the box back. Thats how it was with me.

FYI my box continued functioning for 6 months after I exited my contract.

Thing is I paid outright on iinet fetch tv. You can still do that if you use them too. Doesn't make sense to me if it's locked. I think I will call them up on that

    • Same here. I have frequent problems with the mini being unable to play recordings made on the mighty. Refreshing the connection between the two boxes in multiroom doesn't help. One day it works, one day it doesn't. Bizarre.

  • Aussie has a fetch tv plan.

I use an HD Home Run with a Synology NAS running Emby (but could just as easily be using Plex, I believe). Practically unlimited storage as it also can compress every recording to H264.
A free XML data stream is available for TV guide too.

  • Fetch is RUBBISH
You are stuck with the apps that they let you use.
Cant download any apps from any library

If you are just after a PVR there are plenty around.
But ALL TVs these days have a built-in PVR.
Just plug in a portable hard disk.

IMPORTANT: Your contract probably says that you must return the Fetch box as it doesnt actually belong to you.
There may be a "No-return" fee for not doing so.

    • Fetch I find is very good than basic pvr. It is just faster and smoother and have updated TV guide.

I checked with iinet, they said I don't have to return the box, but tehy also can't unlock it for me despite already paying $340 for it. Note that current brand new fecth tv is $300.

  • i've been looking for a simple cheap solution for a while too. I'm still running an old windows 7 media centre to record FTA that i'd like to get rid of. was wanting to move recording to plex but they charge for the EPG now. i was trying to consolidate all my stuff on NAS and using Shield TV for streaming

    • There's a free XML service available for Plex & Emby in australia

I looked around for the same, and ended up just buying a new Fetch TV. They are reasonably cheap (<$300) and there isn't another product that has the same feature set at the same price point…

  • Get on a emby or plex stream so no need to record anything.

I bought a Fetch Mighty on one of the recent Ozbargain deals for the TV in the second room I get relegated to. I'm very impressed with it. It came with 3 free months of the full package and I'm currently overdosing on the Turbo car shows, BBC Top Gear episodes as well as the new fta Channel 96 Rush.

Recording is easy and the epg really good. I'd recommend it to anyone requiring a good pvr to record fta TV. The extra Fetch TV Channels, Netflix, catch up TV etc are just bonuses.
