MacBook Air - No USB Port

I now have an MacBook air 2020 and did not realise it doesn't come with usb port. Can anyone please tell me what affordable option I can get adapter wise to enable me to still plug in usb? Is this possible? Also not sure what to use to back up now as what I was using in the previous MacBook air uses usb and probably need to upgrade anyway due to bigger storage capacity on new mac. TIA :)

  • I'm no Mac user, but I'm assuming you can get a lightning to USB adaptor quite easily.

Edit - they don't use lightning, they have a USB C connector. Amazing what you can learn from Google.

USB C to USB adapters are readily available.

FYI the physical connector on the Macbook Air (and others) is USB-C. Standard, full size USB ports are called USB-A, plus then there are a bunch of USB-B Mini/Micro connectors.

Technically your Macbook has 2x Thunderbolt 3 ports: higher bandwidth than USB-C 3.2 Gen2x2 or whatever the hell it's called, even though it uses the same physical connector. Thunderbolt will give you more options for higher res/higher refresh rate monitors etc.

Get yourself some USB-C to USB-A dongles or a cheapo USB-C hub if you just want to take it with you, or consider spring for a decent Thunderbolt 3 dock if you plan on setting up a docking station with large monitor etc

since USB-C carries much more power than your standard ones, I would be a cautious buyer, maybe better to invest into well branded USB-C hub instead; You don't want to fry your expensive lappy do you? I've recently purchased Satechi , so far so good. But curious to find out if there are cheaper and reputable brands?

Electronic components will only use as much power as they need (in general). USB-C PD (Power Delivery) standard can handle up to 60W over a standard USB-C cable and 100W over a specially designated cable.

What you're probably thinking of is the Google Engineer (Benson Leung) who evaluated a whole bunch of USB-C cables and has a list of recommended ones: https://buyandroidchargers.com/list-of-benson-leungs-usb-c-google-engineer-usb-c/

I'd still recommend going for a decent brand, but your reason isn't exactly true and just muddies the already cloudy waters around USB-C and USB in general. There will be other reasons why a crappy USB-C dock will fry your laptop, but simply using a 100W charger with a 60W laptop is not one of them.

Wait I just understood what you were trying to say - clearly haven't had my coffee this morning yet. Yes because there's high power being delivered over USB-C, then the consequences are higher of something going wrong due to crappy quality. Therefore buy a decent brand

$29 at Apple: USB-C to USB Adapter

    • Not very good reviews. Snaps off on first use 😬

Just take it back. No point having something so useless.
You shouldnt have to spend extra money to perform a standard connection.
Like when Apple took away the standard earphone socket from the iphone 7 to force you to use their technology.

Another example of Apple telling us how we should run our lives!

      Old news. I don't know why you're so surprised….

Like when Apple took away the standard earphone socket, and everybody bitched and whined and moaned it was the end of the world, and Google mocked it in 2016 then removed it from Pixel in 2017, but somehow nobody says that Google was telling Pixel users how to run their lives?

Here's a clue - don't like Apple? Don't buy it. Guess who's forcing you to buy it? Nobody. Guess who asked you to have a big cry every time somebody else exercises their free market choice to buy whatever the hell they feel like? Nobody.

      • Absolutely, GrueHunter! I hate the removal of consumer choice, the headphone port in particular. When time for a new phone came, I ordered a Moto G8 and e-mailed Motorola advising I purchased their phone because they retained it.
iPhone, Google Pixel, and OnePlus - all were excluded from my purchase considerations.

Vote with your wallets. Personally I hate wired headphones and have only used bluetooth headphones or audio connection for the last decade or so, so the removal of the headphone jack from both Apple and Google got a barely registering "meh" from me. I'm guessing the majority are in the same boat as me, which is why it's a dying feature. Camera, battery life and screen are my highest priorities - to the point where I'd probably even be comfortable getting rid of the charging port and having inductive only if it was reliable and quick - both for charging and file transfer

          • @chartparker: Agree. If China are going to start playing silly buggers with barley and beef - time to start looking at things that are not 'Made in China'. As hard as it might be - we should be looking for other options.

    • The only reason they run your life (as you said "our" lives) is because you keep being compelled to post crap on an Apple based thread.

Simple - get your life back, refuse to read and comment on an Apple thread.

      🙏

Spend $1800+ for an Apple, and then another $29 for an adapter where many other laptops' connectivity comes standard
Soon you'll pay separately for a charger and a box.
.. Then when something goes wrong out of warranty, the Genius store charges you more than the laptop to fix :P

Didn’t you go through a similar issue with Charging Air Pods Pro?

Lol, obviously op still can't identify USB C.

    • I have a lot of issues 😀 Charging the AirPods wirelessly. That was a little stalky BTW

      • No stalky intended.

Just if you are in the Apple Ecosystem and they have switched to USB-C on AirPods, it would
seem highly likely this would be adopted across other products.

  • Bought a $1800 laptop but too stingy to buy $29 adapter?

Did I say how much I was willing to pay 🤔

I just bought a converter off Amazon for about $30. Does USB, HDMI, SD cards etc. It only gets used when I get out my DSLR, which isn't very often now as an iPhone generally does the job unless I need to use zoom, play with shutter speeds etc.

I also bought a USB C to lightning connector for my phone off ebay for about $5 so I didn't have to bother with converters if I wanted to charge my phone. You can also put it directly into the computer power adapter so it's one less thing you have to carry if you are travelling.

Maybe I'm in the minority but I don't really even notice it "missing" the old USB ports since everything is now wireless and storage is on iCloud.

$29 at officeworks for the Apple brand adapter or $22 for a cord at target.

Officeworks does have a $6.50 adapter but I wouldn’t buy that one.
