Smart bulbs info needed

Hi, need to go for a holiday ha ha ha…

Smart bulbs, do they need constant internet connection or can I set them up to start at certain times and then turn off the wifi when going on my holiday?

Do they need a hub?

Some bulbs do need a hub/bridge like Philips Hue but others like Lifx don't. Why would you turn off the WiFi when going on holiday?

  • Pretty sure that won't work.

Leave wifi on and switch on and off at night, so people think your home.

    • This is one of the biggest advantages of having a smart house - you can make it look like you're home when you're not, even to the point of playing music!

No idea why you'd switch your wifi off when you go on holiday…

      • you don't actually need smart house/device to do all that

Just get a PowerPoint timer for a lamp.

    • Was hoping to be fancy but a timer might be the best thing ha ha ha…

  • In the majority of cases, yes, you need an active internet connection so the app can communicate with the bulb.

If you know someone technical its possible to flash different software onto most bulbs to allow you to control it exclusively over wifi…

  • Not bulb but i have an old dlink plug that set on daily schedule on/off, when i changed wifi login the plug still keeo its usual routine despite no internet connection, so apparently it has internal time memory, buy if you leave it unplugged for too long it might not work anymore
