Kogan Acquires Matt Blatt Furniture - Now Online Only

Reports this morning that Kogan has acquired the Matt Blatt furniture business
https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/kogan-acquires-…

"We essentially rescued this business and we're going to run it as an online-only operation which we think is exactly what a business like this needs," Mr Kogan said.

Apparently no inventory was included in the $4.4m purchase, although the website has already been rebranded and is now selling the designer furniture replicas, along with dishwashing detergent and re-usable shopping bags.

Would you be tempted to buy furniture online?

Dick Smith online is also owned by Kogan.

Look at what is happening with Kogan website itself. Kogan sources some products but others are market place sellers. Essentially their plan is to basically do an Amazon without the same level of service.

The difference between furniture shops online is essentially the packaging and assembly instructions. It is IKEA vs the rest. 99% of the time non Ikea is badly packaged and some bits damaged from delivery with bad instructions that lead to problems.

    • I've had good and bad experiences with Ikea and with their direct competitors, but only with pick-up (not online).

I like to see / touch a piece of furniture before purchasing.

But, couriers / delivery seems to be the industry to get into if this trend continues.

We all know how sub contractors get treated. I don't think it is going to get any better.

I find it interesting the individualistic dog eat dog mentality is still going strong. I went up to some vegetable seller proposing if I ramp up value menu to my customers if they gave me 10% off their retail price 99% of them didn't want to cooperate even after their sales are down 20% - 30% because everyone is going to Woolies / Coles or getting deliveries. They had zero interest in what the business is about, some of them are just smug about being able to get JobKeeper because they are both owner and employee.

No they ARE doing a amazon…..

Catch is also doing the same thing.

and ebay is a hybrid of amazon/gumtree (yes ebay owns gumtree). ebay is basically a massive 3rd party seller doing it a massive scale using really tiny sellers.

      • Even Bunnings has a marketplace now.

        • Oh yes keep forgetting about them! I assume its based on the catch backend/suppliers maybe? As they have the same parent company.

          • @JimmyF: Dunno how Bunnings run it's marketplace. I always though it was a bit odd for them to even have one, given they're only just gotten around to online ordering for their own products.

Hmm I wonder if that replica eames is any good.

    • Reasonably popular I think; worth the $?

he's demonstrated he knows this market and understands how to make a buck. kogan established milan direct for those that remember, quickly ramped up to $10-12m revenues before flogging it off to Temple & Webster pre ipo.

    • Kogan was a part owner and Dean was the one who drove the expansion in acquiring new products etc. Back when MD was first getting its legs I was the customer service manager among many other things. We had a lot of fun back in those days during what was the Wild West of e-commerce.

Temple and webster should have snapped up mattblatt to add to their portfolio, kogan basically just bought the name(same like what they did to Dick smith) selling some non relevant cheaply made stuffs , another iconic quality brand gone down the drain…

funny enough Kogan created a link some time ago..

I've looked at this site a few times, and honestly the reviews are mixed.

For me, the ONLY reason I would buy from Matt Blatt (if I did, I haven't yet) would be I could go instore and look at the products before I did buy them.

  • kogan designer furniture. oh yeah …

Kogan is pretty craptastic for furniture, but it's super cheap when on sale and is functional, just don't try to move it with all the legs touching the floor.

  • I don’t mind Matt Blatt, some of it is at the end of the spectrum
In terms of taste (like that horse thing they have), but some of their furniture is decent looking and when on sale, its decently priced. Also, a lot of their stores have pinball machines to play for free

all the matt blatt stock ended up on graysonline -i took advantage and got some cheap pieces. the matt blatt stuff is alot better than ikea (but not flat packed so was a bitch to pick up and move). Note

the stuff being sold on the matt blatt website at the moment has nothing to do with matt blatt, its all stuff that kogan normally sells which is likely of inferior quality.
