From the website:

The 58th year of Shouwa, early summer
It’s June, and the summer heat has arrived earlier than it does most years.
By day there are crickets, and by night there are cicadas.

We’re in Hinamizawa, a small village in the countryside.
There are fewer than two thousand people here. But every year, there is an event.

This event is a mysterious death.
(The series has run from 1979 to 1983)

On a certain day in June, someone dies, and someone else goes missing.
The series of deaths is connected to the upheaval surrounding the dam construction project.
A murder case that was covered up is being reenacted.
Is it a conspiracy? A coincidence? Or perhaps a curse?

Someone who was supposed to be there isn’t.
Someone who wasn’t supposed to be there is.

Someone who was alive last night is dead now.
And someone who is here right now isn’t alive.

So, there is no way to avert tragedy. There is no choice but to give up.
But don’t give up.

Only you can stand up to this.

new season of anime is coming out soon too
    fyi

With New graphics. I remember playing this "game" (more of visual novel) with characters of only 2 digits and ridiculously large anime eyes. Anyway, I enjoyed it.

However, I believe it is highly overrated as a detective novel. And many events that only Japanese or those who are familiar with their culture would understand have been deleted with new releases.

If you get it you can patch it with 07th Mod to get voices and better sprites.

I started playing it earlier in the month and I think it improves the experience a lot.

Also I'm only 2 games in so far, but I felt like the first one is a bit slower compared to the next one.

Not necessarily a bad thing, but it definitely spends more time introducing the characters in Onikakushi than the second game.

  • So basically it's a demo.

    • +1

Not quite, it is the first of eight chapters and it does normally cost money apparently which really a demo does not.
But I see what you mean - kind of a taster for the game with full functionality.

Do you say that for any game or book with a sequel?

      • -1

        No, do you?

        • +1

Message wasn't directed towards you, but rather the user who thinks because something has sequels its a demo.

@NobalaKoba: Ah, ok. No problem. Have a great Sunday.

          • +2

@NobalaKoba: When it's listed as 'chapter 1' that sounds like a small portion of a book, not the entire first book of a series.

  • I finished this visual novel a long time ago. I got into it until 4 AM in the morning and I played it on a netbook.
I find Higurashi's story to be better than Umineko's but it really depends on individual's taste.
If you can't be bothered reading the visual novel, then Manga or Anime is the next best thing. But oddly, I felt really satisfied at that time when I finished reading the visual novel.
