Vic-low income healthcare card

I lost my job 2 months ago due to covid. Fortunately I have now found another one. However I did apply to centrelink in the interim for assistance go which I just received a low income healthcare card. Now I have a full time job I will notify centrelink and my low income card will be come invalid but is there anything I can use this towards before I hand it back? E.g rego/insurances?

  • Medications?

    • I wouldn’t use it for this. Many pharmacies will input your HCC number when arranging your script. If they do this and you have earned above the limit, this could cause some problems.

You should only really use a HCC in instances where someone just needs to sight the card rather than input your numbers.

  • Rego, utility bills, public transport concession?

Low income HCC is not valid for transport concessions in Victoria
All the other things you mentioned are valid though.

It is definitely valid for concessions. And yes it’s a great one to use it for because they just check it’s the current colour. There’s no inputting of data or anything to confirm it’s still valid.

As soon as you advise you are working Full Time the card will be cancelled.
services that use it will check validity when its used (pharmacy, power concessions etc) and as such unless you plan to keep the card some how you are unlikely to benefit from the concessions

Also the list posted above while correct does state "may be eligible for a concession"

A lot of services seperate Low income (LI on card) and Jobseeker (JS or NS on card)
For example, Transport concessions are not valid with LI cards.

    • For example, Transport concessions are not valid with LI cards.

In Victoria they are. Inspectors just sight the card to make sure it’s the valid year based on its colour.

      • Better half is an Inspector on the railways in Vic.
LI is not valid for concession and if she sees you travelling with a concession ticket and using a LI HCC as your reason she will fine you

        • The PTV website says nothing about what type of health care card that you can use to get your concession, just that you need to have one.

I was using one for a full 12 months a couple of years back, and a current colleague was using it from their start of employment until before coronavirus without anyone questioning them, yet always being inspected.

Either your partner is the only one that knows this rule, or it’s not the rule.

Centrelink customers have 14 days to update their information. The card should be valid until the stroke of midnight on the last day.
