Home Gym setup within budget

I am considering buying treadmill, cross trainer and home gym setup for Garage in order to save gym membership fees and flexibility. I don't want to spend lot of money but need something reliable. I have been looking on Facebook marketplace. There are some good brands within budget but out of warranty. I came across Kogan Products. They have got lot of items from Fortis brand. Has anyone used this brand and any feedback. Also, any other ideas to setup home gym without spending too much on expensive brands.

  • Kogan seems to have a bad reputation around here.

Fortis: some made up near English name (sounds more of French origin), only good thing is you are buying from an Australian retailer that will definitely make the effort to try to get away with responsiblities.

    • I am contemplating about Kogan as well. I tried to find Fortis brand on Google but cannot find anything.

I can imagine once gyms open back up, there would be an influx of second hand home gym equipment on the market.

In the long run it would be cheaper to buy.

I'd definitely go second hand, save a fair bit of money and people buy a lot of this stuff and never use it.

On the treadmill/cross trainer, why not just walk/run outside? That would be the cheapest option by far. For a home gym otherwise, I've often seen the squat rack, a barbell and some weights recommended as the bare minimum.

    • Treadmills can definitely be helpful in some cases. I used to try jogging outside but it always made my shins hurt. Treadmills absorb some of the bounce and my pains went away.

      • Probably the incline of the treadmill deck more than its suspension.
If you land with a flat foot/heel first the shock goes into your bone(shin), an incline makes it more likely for the ball of your foot to land first and the shock is lessened by your calf muscle.
Pretty much every runner gets shin splints at some point, but the bone heals stronger so they're less likely to come back.

  • I have been looking for second hand stuff as well. It is still expensive and doesn't come with any warranty. For a treadmill, second hand is around 600-800 for working treadmill.

I do walk outside. However, treadmill and cross trainer is for my wife. I am looking to buy multi home gym for myself and some weights.

  • It won't be long before gyms start opening up. Reconsider if you want to plant that much money into home equipment which will likely see little use before you decide to sell.

I have always had a pair of 8kg dumbbells and kettlebells (24kg & 32kg), which I use more frequently in the backyard now. Milk crates, tied together by zipties, serve as a bench of sort. I get my cardio by doing morning walks or the occasional jogs. Cost me next to nothing.

I may consider waiting little bit more. I expect people will put equipment for sale once gym open up.

As for lifting weights, have you ever thought about just getting dumbbells first and try the dumbbell-only routines? You can do a lot with just dumbbells. Just need to be creative with the movements and targeted muscle group. From there, get the heavier ones as you progress.

    • I can go with dumbbells only as do walk and run. Looking for cardio equipment under budget for wife.

  • Poles, buckets and cement from Bunnings !

    • Thanks. It is already happening every weekend with trips to bunnings.

  • What's the budget?

    • I am looking to spend total of 1500 - 2000 (Max). I want to do mix of cardio and weights equipment.

      • What about dumbells / kettlebells for METCON style training?

There's heaps of resources for those types of workouts online and the equipment won't take up anywhere near as much room…

I cannot say enough good things about the Totalgym. I used mine *for years, to the point I had to finally replace the wheels under the sliding bench! One of the best things about the equipment is: all members of the household can use it easily as it's easy to adjust. I only bought their lowest-level machine (cannot add weights), because I've always set it to the next-highest incline and that was perfect for me.

Add to that: weighted gloves (mine are 1.5lbs ea) and ankle weights (5lbs ea). Walk 5kms at a good pace (careful not to "sling" your legs forward) and find some hills. Come back and go on the Totalgym for 20-30 mins. While walking, do extended, controlled arm "circles" and bicep curls as you go. The muscle definition results after only a month are amazing. No kidding. I've had three people I know take me up on this and all of them now rave about this. *MVA has now made my workout pretty much impossible.

    Good luck!

    • Thanks. I will check Totalgym. I haven't heard this before.

  • Consider a bike and use it on a roller set up takes up much less room and is a lot more portable then a treadmill. You can also take the bike for a ride and enjoy the fresh air.I also find that treadmills give to much impact.
