What TV to get in a bright lounge room?

Panasonic Viera stopped working, sound is there but no picture

Looking to get a new one, too many choices out there and I went to good guys, JB & HN.

GG said hisense
JB said sony
HN said Samsung

If anything I got confused at all the different types. Just need a decent TV for a bright room at a good price.

I have a budget of 1500 - 2000 for a 55inch.

Help me out! Please.

I had a LG C9 and it wasn't bright enough so moved to Samsung Q90R and have been happy since, also found the Samsung to have less reflections too.

    • The guy mentioned the anti glare on is available on samsung q80 models and above, it may be worth considering.

      • After researching it's the q95. Not sure why he told me q80

If you got that much for a TV you don't need help. If you still can't decide by a $400 50" cheap TV until you can make up your mind and by that time you can buy the TV you've been looking a lot less and pocket the difference.

    Sony X95G / X950G / X9500G (same model different names)
    Samsung Q70
Hisense Q8 is not bad either but I'm not familiar with how this year's model compares to the above

www.rtings.com will help you pick the features you want - for example the Sony will do Dolby Vision but the Samsung can do Freesync if either of those a requirement for you
Sony can do Airplay 2 but reports are that it's still buggy

Wouldn't go OLED for a bright room even though their contrast is far superior in my opinion

I have a Sony, love the picture quality but I think it struggles a little on a really bright day.

If I could do it again I would go Hisense as I loved how it looked in JB Hifi and I have had past issues with Samsung which to their credit they resolved to my satisfaction.

Each brand has different models that vary wildly in brightness, so you cannot say that one brand is more suited than the other. That's like asking which brand of paint is a better colour.

From what I read, and have observed in the shop, the Sony X95G is very very bright. In a well-lit shop, its contrast was indistinguishable from the oled tv's on display, but its brightness definitely exceeded it.

  • Thank you all i think i have narrowed it down the below:

    Current pricings for the 55inch
Samsung education $1911 for the Q80 (For the antiglare)
Samsung education $1574 for the Q70
not sure if its worth the difference in price for the anti glare?

    Sony x95 $1895

Fingers crossed they're apart of a frenzy deal.

I actually got the X95G from this post - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/491583

Just under 2K for the 65 inch, I too had the same conclusion as Make it so at the shop, however when I came home and used it in the normal modes, not the demo mode the brightness just seemed a little dim for the living room.

To be fair to the TV it is in a living room with 2 big North facing windows to the right covering about 1/3 of the wall and the wall it is facing has floor to ceiling bifolds for about 3/4 of the length. Colors are fantastic and picture quality is amazing, especially with nice 4K content such as David Attenborough and Blade Runner 2049.

I thought the Hisense R8 that I viewed at a friend's house would do better in my situation but without physically bringing the TV to my living room there is no real way of telling.

      • thanks for your input, nothing against Hisense but Ive had 2 friends advise they had problems with theres. Maybe they got unlucky though because that can happen with all brands

    • hey where can i get that price for the sony??

      • I ended up getting display model 65 inch $1997 at GG

        • Oh hell naw, is it possible to get that price anywhere for new in box one? Or wait till eofy sale if any? The more I read the more I get pointed towards to x95g as the best non oled tv out there under 2500

          • @striker5950: Possibly, I got the display because I needed one by the weekend. It has been $2000 before so you could wait, but they aren't making them anymore so don't wait too long! They are $2495 at JB atm and they all had stock when I last checked so they would probably reduce further once the new Sonys come in. They're awesome, equivalent/slightly better would be the Q80r but that was $2800 for a display and also hard to find. Good luck!

If it's going to be in a bright room, you probably want to ensure it has a matte screen, so reflections won't be as bad. That should probably be a requirement you don't budge on.

  • Anyone know when the X95H will be available in Australia? Google search indicates it was once listed on Harvey Norman's site but was later removed.

  • X95G 55 inch $1895 with 12% cashback so $1667.60

    Or

Samsung Q75R $1895 with $80 store credit at GG so $1815

    $148 difference between the 2

Would you buy now at these OK prices, or wait? And which one would you go for?
These are last years models & this years model aren't as good as them.

    • Fairly Old Post but where was the 12% cashback at?

      • It was during click frenzy

I used to sell TVs. LG's selling point is their OLED panels, which obviously specialise in the blacks.
In comparison, Samsung focuses on super bright whites. So you'll want to go Samsung for a bright room I would say.

From my understanding, good blacks are only noticeable in a dark room with little ambient light. In a brighter room, not as noticeable or important. OLED panels with their inky blacks would be a waste in a bright room.
