Is This a Good Laptop for My Needs? HP Envy X-360

How does laptop suit my needs?

I need a machine for Python programming (beginner), running a couple of VM’s, web conferencing, multi tab web browsing, configuring network equipment, document creation and editing and light photo editing.

I don’t think it has an Ethernet port, but I assume this could be overcome with a USB-C hub.

Intel® Core™ i5-10210U
15.6" diagonal 4K AMOLED 400 nits, 100% (3840 x 2160)
16 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
512 GB Intel® SSD
16 GB DDR4-2666 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
512 GB Intel® SSD

I like the form factor and case design of this laptop. Does the multitouch take away from processing power? Also as it is a 4K display can the graphics settings be set at a lower resolution to save processing power and battery life?

  • OLED is not suitable for your needs.

    • Care to elaborate?

        • Battery life takes a significant dive
        • Unknown wear in an office/productivity environment
        • Non-linear colour shift with brightness settings
        • AMOLED pixel arrangement will not give you 4K sharpness but costs 4k rendering
        • Caveat when AMOLED laptop screens are mixed with touch panels
        • It is more fragile to impact

I would only recommend OLED Laptops for those who consume media as the primary usage.

        • Thanks so much for taking the time to share this info.

          • @Tightmike: Also a 1920x1080 screen is probably enough for what you need it for.

can the graphics settings be set at a lower resolution

Yes, but it'll look worse (sometimes much worse) and won't save you any power or battery life.

oled is bad. the screen turns on and off 100times a second and thats bad for your brain

  • Please be careful with HP I purchased a laptop from their online store. They called me the day after I placed the order & advised due to Covid19 they were unable to supply the laptop & would have to cancel the order. They then sent an email to confirm the order was cancelled. The next day they CHARGED my credit card. I emailed them & they advised that a refund would be processed & I would be notified again when refund was finalised. It has been 2 weeks since the last email so I have initiated a chargeback request through my credit card provider.
