Google Home Max for $138 - $153 [AmEx/DJs]

Just wanted to share how I got a Google Home Max for cheap - depending on your specific circumstances the achievable price is $138 - $153.

TL;DR:

  1. Get discounted eGift cards with Amex offer
  2. Go onto Facebook and ask DJs to price match
  3. Buy from DJs at their inflated price
  4. Wait for difference to be refunded

A few observations based on my experiences:

1) Buy DJ eGift cards using Amex deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/529647
(Get between $45 - $60 back depending on which offer you have/can "borrow" from friends - either $15 or $20 cashback off $100 spend)

https://www.davidjones.com/default.aspx?Z=c&action=displayvo…

btw you only need $200 'coz you can pay the remaining $100 direct on your CC. But if you don't have an Amex and you can beg 3 friends you can still get the full thing, but see Step 4 for a caution.

FYI my gift cards took overnight to arrive, although it should in theory be around 5 minutes - potential pitfalls is getting your order cancelled if you're obviously smashing the Amex deal with multiple purchases one after the other. Use different addresses/email addresses to minimise the chances of getting spotted.

2) Get Amex to price match Officeworks at $198 plus free delivery (no other place has free delivery)
(Only chalk is available. DJs is out of stock of Anthracite/Charcoal)

Use Facebook messaging. They're not responding to email, and I didn't even bother to try calling given COVID-19 has killed support pretty much everywhere. Also you'll have it in writing in case something goes wrong during the process. They'll tell you to go ahead and order from them, and they'll refund the difference.

3) Buy from DJs at $307 using the 3x Amex offers
https://www.davidjones.com/Product/22042562/GOOGLE-HOME-MAX-…

Don't bother with cashback. I already checked. It's gone "Temporarily unavailable" at Shopback and 0% at Cashrewards. No idea why.

4) Give them your order number and wait for refund to be processed

I'm still waiting on this part, so hopefully they'll just refund the difference to my credit card. If you paid entirely with gift cards they might issue the refund as a gift card, so be prepared for the possibility that you have to spend the refund at DJs.

Et voila. Best price ever.

Things to spend DJs eGift vouchers on in case things go south (e.g. goes out of stock while you're waiting for gift cards, or Officeworks pulls their offer):

  • Price match, but with shipping from JB Hifi, Good Guys, Harvey Norman, etc. and wear the shipping. Still an OK deal on par with Good Guys commercial.
  • See if DJs will price match 15% off iTunes gift cards and pay with eGift card, getting best discount achievable on those, short of Vogue Amex Fashion night and Shop Small
  • Get Lego. 20% off - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/539376

Happy bargaining!

  • Time is money mate.

    • Yeah I tend to waffle on a bit. For the record it probably took me longer to write that post above than to actually do the deed. I was just trying to cram every little piece of information into it 'coz I was scared of all the people saying it didn't work for them because of this or that.

  • You'd think the NSA would be giving them out for free by now?

    • The minis they gave away last year were only capable of listening. These larger models have the capability of defeating advanced thin-film aluminium cranial shielding, which doesn't come cheaply.
