New Foxtel streaming service launching Monday - Binge

Foxtels new streaming service will be launching on Monday 25th - called Binge.

Looks like the content is a lot of the Foxtel "exclusives" through their deals with HBO and WarnerMedia.

It'll be ad-free, and cost $10 per month (to access one stream in SD), $14 (2 streams in HD) and $18 (4 streams in HD).

Starting content listed in this NewsCorp article.

I haven't found what their app situation will be like - presumably the same as Kayo (that is - no Xbox, no PS4, or Fire Stick etc).

Who's going to get it? I might give it a go - but that'll likely depend on the app situation (if it's useless like Kayo I won't bother).

Looks like I’m still current, though.

      • Ill send them email today and may come back if they explain.

      • both included according to the telegraph article in OP

        • does that mean Foxtel Now Loses all of those shows?

          • +1

@Nalar: I would assume Foxtel now was a failed response to netflix etc, and this is now their new strategy. I wouldn't be surprised if Foxtel now ends soon.

      • That's just the "hit shows" silicon valley is listed on the page under comedy and Westworld under "recent hits"

    It'll be ad-free

    For now…

They take away freedom of choice of where to watch, outbidding rights to shows, stealing the F1 and others from FTA, make you pay for packs you don’t want, changing now won’t change my view, I’ll pass…. forever….on principle.

    • +3

Don't forget putting ads on pay-tv.

    • As much as I don't like Foxtel (on principal as well), there's enough there for me to put into rotation. It could also get them to lift their game in other departments as however late to the party they are, if this proves worthwhile for them, they could change strategies. I'm not holding my breath though :)

I always have Netflix, but will cycle through Stan and Hulu every couple of months. There are some crossovers, but for rewatching GOT, Walking Dead, Silicon valley and a couple of others, it'll be worth it.

    Murdoch I’ll pass

    • Triple pass

A bunch of old shows served in a restrictive way, no thanks.

  • Down vote for kayo comment, works fine for me, free too. Get foxtel now free too.

    • Kot sure what you're getting at here… Kayo is good, but it's absolutely rubbish in terms of what apps they have/devices they support. No Fire Stick, not supported on most smart TV's, not supported on Xbox/Ps4. Just not good enough in a world where even Stan supports more platforms…

  • +2

I'll definitely be signing up for the free trial..only attraction for me is the HBO content…

  • $10 per month (to access one stream in SD)

SD? Is this the middle ages?

    • +2

Should probably ask stan and Netflix the same question.

    • It's just so they can put spiel like "For as little as $10 a month" in their ads, nobody actually subscribes at that tier.

    • It's a bs way of being able to market themselves with 'it's from just $10/month!', knowing full well no-one actually wants the base option.

  • It’s should also be noted made for Foxtel shows will not be shown on binge until their end (even then not a garauntee)
Shows confirmed to NOT be coming to binge
    Wentworth
    Selling houses Australia
    Location location location Australia
    Great Aussie bake off
    Aussie gold hunters

These shows are still currently showing on Foxtel and they have confirmed they won’t be shown on binge while currently broadcasting (this includes all previous series)

Movies will premiere on Foxtel and transition to binge over time.
The fastest way to see the latest releases will be on Foxtel (their quote not mine)

So, classical Foxtel strategy, still completely failing to understand the market and its direction.

I'm all for competition but it really surprises me that content owners keep fracturing the market this way, rather than cooperating with each other.
This was exactly the reason why piracy was so rampant prior to Netflix and Stan, and with Disney+, this, and whatever else, people will return to giving up on making the decision of which they should use.

    • Yep. Agreed. Still torrent what's not on Netflix. And use Netflix when I'm too lazy to think about what I actually want to watch.

    • It's not quite as bad. I reckon pirating will go up but not back to the levels it was previously.

You can still sub to one subscription for a few months, watch everything and then cancel and switch to another. It's not ideal because you can't see things when they first launch but to be honest apart from GOT I've never really done that anyway.

Fun fact! Binge. was originally a channel on Foxtel, and they are repurposing the brand.
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binge_(TV_channel)

  • Looking at the their website https://binge.com.au it just went live

  • Surprise surprise, an even crappier level of support for devices than Kayo!

    https://help.binge.com.au/s/article/Supported-Devices-Browse…

    • Chromecast
      * Supported on Chromecast Ultra and latest 3rd Generation +
      * Chromecast 1st Generation is not supported on Binge

Any idea if Chromecast 2nd Generation is supported? Their website doesn't give a clear answer, lol. All 3 Chromecasts I have in my house are 2nd Gen, but work fine with literally every other app I cast from so I don't see the need to upgrade them.

  • I just noticed something odd about the Binge app, when compared to the Kayo app.
I have an LG TV, which is not supported in the same way as a Samsung is – so no native LG version of the Kayo app is available to install directly. Which sucks.
So when I got Kayo, I just cast it to the Chromecast that I have on that set, which is Gen I. But when I wanted to get Binge, that would not work, and I did not want to go through all the crap of having apps all over the place.
So I sideloaded the android version of the Kayo app onto my Vodafone (android) TV box (which is excellent and which I recommend). Took a bit of fiddling but it works just fine.
Then, I looked at doing the same with Binge, but before I looked for a version to sideload, I looked at the app store through the Voda TV box — and there was Binge. No need to sideload it. All I had to do was download and install, and input the code to verify the TV. It works a treat.
So Streamotion, which developed the software for both platforms, has put the Binge app in the app store but not Kayo. Hopefully they will tweak Kayo and put it in the app store, and do it soon, but it's kinda odd that they have different levels of access for what are similar streaming platforms…
