  • sweet, normally that means that Lavazza will have a similar special soon!

    • Why would you want Lavazza when you've already stocked up on Vittoria?

      • Sorry, meant that i will wait for Lavazza.

    • I bought lavazza beans from woolworths a few weeks back for $16 per kg. (2x500gm beans for 16 bucks) bargain. I noticed on the weekend lavazza is on special for $27 kg now!

Wheres the usual Woolies and Coles catalogue post?

  • What's better:
    1. buying whole beans and grinding them at home with a crap grinder; or
    2. buying pre-ground coffee?

I currently have this grinder: http://www.sunbeam.com.au/products/kitchen/em0430/ and my coffee doesn't taste that great.

      Buy a good grinder.

well.. if you're REALLY into it, then definitely grind it yourself.

Its about your coffee/espresso machine, you need to determine how fine of a grind makes the best pour for your machine. Therefore unless you can get pre-grounded coffee that's perfect for your machine its always better to grind it yourself because that way you have the control.

If your coffee isn't tasting that great, there could be a myriad of reasons as to why…from your taste buds to the roasting of the bean..LOL. Try different blends of beans? Unless you're saying that if a cafe with a good machine and grinder uses your beans and they produce better tasting coffee…then there's a WHOLE OTHER WORLD of possibilities as to why your home made coffee doesn't taste good ;) but we shall not go there.

+1 on getting a good grinder.

      • My machine is some cheap Breville one :P.

    • A true ozbargainer question hahaha

Good deal if you like stale crap coffee

Dont buy these beans, go to an independent roaster. These ones have been sitting in packages for months and Vittoria is nothing special with regards to taste anyway.

My favourite coffee in Sydney is Danes or Di Gabriels and they have warehouses you can buy from.

    Is this fair trade coffee?

    • +8

Dunno, but it is unfair on your tastebuds

      • LOL@AntMan76….Gold :0)

Yes, sorry to be a PITA but supermarket roasted coffee is well past its best by the time you get it - even the whole bean.

If you're taking your coffee seriously try and source something local and buy in quantities you can consume within 2-3 weeks of purchase.

2kgs of already stale beans? I pity whoever drinks that last coffee made with it.

And if nothing else always grind your beans ON DEMAND, so literally before you make your coffee. Biggest and most simple improvement you can make to your end brewing.

Stovetops make good coffee for those on lower budget….also highly recommend the Aeropress (google it). Use it with a handgrinder myself. :-)

Couldn't agree more. It's not just a coffee snob thing. The difference between recently-roasted and stale beans is not subtle, and there are many roasters in Australia who can get freshly roasted beans to you within days.

Bought some Vittoria beans for $12.- recently at the Greengrocers. 250 grams extra in the 1kg bag. Goes through the coffee machine like all the others, coffee is coffee, as long as it's not instant. And yeah, I thought that was a fair trade, $12.- for 1.25kg of coffee :-)

    • Although no fan of stale old Vittoria beans, your comment is a good reminder that coffee appreciation is a journey and you are obviously well on that journey.

      • I would have finished the journey by now if it wasn't for the interruption by Beer, Wine and Spirits amongst other things.

  • Does anyone know the country these beans were sourced from?

  • Daily Roast is really good..

  • Morgans at Emu Plains is a coffee roaster (and yes-they are fair trade!) and also have a small cafe at their chocolate factory (Zokoko) which is also fair trade and only 1 of 2 places that make chocolate from bean to bar. I have never had a bad coffee there and in fact when I went to buy one of my fave blends they gave it to me for free as it was already 6 days post roasting and would only be "good" for the next 3-4 days! They are passionate about their product and quality control. Their coffee has a "roasted on" date rather than a "best before" Not cheap at $12 for 250g but worth it if you love good coffee.
If you don't care particularly, Aldi have Arabica beans in a mild or dark roast for around $13kg as one of their standard lines-best before of March '12 and no worse than most supermarket blends.

Given that the only local coffee producer's coffee isn't worth drinking, Vittoria is our choice of the store bought ones. It took me years to convince hubby that beans were better than buying it already ground, but once he tried it he won't go back - fine by me. :)

If you buy this special from woolies though, please, please check the BB (best before)dates on the packs - there were two dates on the stock in our local store yesterday: 13/ 09/ 12 and 10/ 08/ 11!!!!!!!! Given that there's a 13 month difference in the dates, (and one was already past the date,) it was a no-brainer on which to get. The people at the warehouse clearly need a refresher course in stock rotation.
