Cheap and reliable GPS

My sister just got her licence, and I'm looking for a cheap and reliable GPS that is easy to use. I'd prefer to buy it at a store, but if it's cheaper online then I'd be interested in that too.
Thanks

  • alternative suggestion: if she has an iphone take a look at Metroview app.

    • Metroview on iPhone is a great alternative. I have mentioned below the Navig8r GPS (which also uses Metroview), but after using that and the iPhone version it's a close call.

The iPhone is great because of how well it handles tunnels, and the fast (immediate) lock due to triangulation with GSM towers. For the interface, the iPhone wins too, with pinch to zoom, etc.

Downside to the iPhone app is that you really need a windscreen mount. Which is easy to get but they never allow you to use a phone case.

  • another alternative, if sha has a samsung galaxy it comes with navigon, free.
You can also use it to make phone calls ;)

  • Thanks for both of those ideas, but she doesn't have either of those phones unfortunately.

    • A good condition used iPhone 3GS is about $250 on ebay.

  • another alternative, if she has a BMW X6 then it might come with pre-installed GPS…
Check whirlpool http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum/83?g=169 or other gps related forum for more useful suggestions.

  • Go to target. They have this for 99 bucks http://www.navig8r.com.au/products/Latest%20Models/GPS-T43B
Bargain. It is in their latest catalogue.

    • I was going to recommend the Navig8rs too - the mapping and support is awesome.

And that Target-only model is great - never seen that before, gee it looks nice.

Only thing is - you may be better with the I series or another model that has lifetime map updates. With a GPS the mapping needs to be updated A LOT… and that is something that you don't really want to have to continually pay for.

      • The T series a target lok just like an iPhone 4

  • Okay so is it worth her just upgrading her current phone to an iPhone?

  • Just get the acer liquid metal from jbhifi for $128 . Android phone with tons of good mapping options .

    • Thanks for the suggestion.
She is not going with an iPhone 4 (maybe S, depending on price) as she needs a new phone and mp3 player, so it will all work out nicely.
      Thanks for all the suggestions!

  • I think a gps not in the phone is a much better option. My Tom Tom can work while below the dash, no need to have it on the windscreen. In fact it even picks up satellites while in the centre consol - true.
The gps map option in my android is a poor cousin to a real gps.
