  • when is zen 3 coming out?

    • People reckon october.

      • I get the vibe refresh in July/aug zen 3 announcement in Oct but release next year. It's just not a good year for anything

        • I wouldn't be surprised if they delayed for that reason, have heard talk the Pixel 4A is in that situation too.

          • +1

@scuderiarmani: Also no need to rush as Intel havent exactly brought their A game.

            • +1

@PlagueistheCheap: True, but I reckon the 10600k is the best thing they've done in years.

              • @scuderiarmani: If only the MB wasnt so expensive.

                • @PlagueistheCheap: Yeah that's the kicker…. will be interesting to see if that changes, the lack of PCIE4 is another too.

But having a $500 CPU that matches the $1k one is impressive.

The Boards are the big thing stopping me upgrading a HTPC. ITX is really really expensive.

        • No foundries have reduced production AFAIK. Chip foundries are highly automated and very hygenic.

  • Not sure if they have stock, but if you're in Sydney try ccpu

  • pity they've stopped doing pickup

It's been $299 @ shopping express for like 2 weeks.

  • Can someone confirm if this is currently the best bang for buck king for general use and casual gaming?

    • +3

Best bang for buck currently is probably the 3300x. Pair with a decent quality B450 board (like MSI tomahawk or mortar, not any random $100 boards) then you have an upgrade path to 8c or 12c ryzen 4000.

      • +2

Yeah second the 3300x otherwise if spending a bit more a 10600k if gaming is your main focus.

TBH, any of these 3 chips are all great IMO.

The 3300x is basically the 7700k which was 2 to 3 times the price and the 10600k matches a $1k 10900k in gaming.

        • Thanks guys.

Am upgrading from my ancient i5 6600 and hope the 3300x is worth the upgrade!

          • @mg_k: Just think of the 3300x as the 7700k without the premium.

Definitely a nice jump for the price, and board features too (along with potential CPU upgrades later on).

        • 10600k is no doubt an extreme performer gaming wise. I'd advise this CPU if you're (or will be) rocking at least 2070 Super and a 240hz monitor. You do have to pay a hefty price at ~$800 for CPU+Main+Cooler compare to ~$500 for 3600 or $400 for 3300x.

          The 10900k pricing in Australia is silly, 500USD = 1000AUD. Seriously…

          • @Kingduytan: Yeah absolutely, the 10600k really makes the i9 (and i7) look terrible this time around.

Good to have the i5 back to being all you need for gaming again.

Maybe 8 core consoles will change that though…

          • @Kingduytan: I watched the Digital Foundry comparison and 10600k doesn't seem to worth it over the 3600x?

            • @mg_k: As I said, the 10600k is an extreme gaming CPU, you pay the hefty premium to be the top dog. With proper cooling and OC, it will pull ahead of everything else both Intel and AMD in (this is important) 1080p 200+fps gaming. It's worth it if you really really really focus on competitive gaming and have $1k+ GPU AND 240hz+ monitor to even remotely feel that different. BUT, even a pro esport gamers have a hard time telling the different of 144hz and 240hz (search on linus tech tips channel).

So, for the common folks the 10600k makes no sense over 3600x, or even 3600 especially when factoring in the premium mainboard to support OC, and top-of-the-line cooler (280mm+ AIO) to maintain the boost. Btw 3600x isn't worth it over 3600.

              • +1

@Kingduytan: "Btw 3600x is not worth it over 3600."

Yes that's my understanding as well since there's negligible difference.

                Guess I'm back to 3300x vs 3600…

                • +1

@mg_k: 3300x vs 3600 is interesting! What's your total budget, do you already have a GPU that you will reuse? If you're buying a new GPU as well, then go for 3300x and put that $100 to up the GPU to next tier. If you just looking to upgrade CPU at this time, I'd go for 3600 personally. 3300x will be maxed out in CPU heavy games , leaving little to no headroom for any other background apps (chromes, discord, skype, documents, mail, chat apps etc.).

                  • @Kingduytan: I'm currently using a Raedon RX570 which I do think I should upgrade alongside a new cpu…

Also need mb, ram the lot.

I'm a casual gamer and always look for best bang for buck, so I'm leaning towards something like a 1650 Super (unsure if I can justify the 1660 Super as it's a good ~$150 more) or whatever Raedon equiv?

                    • +1

@mg_k: So it looks like you're on a tight budget, then 3300X is pretty much no brainer. 1650 super is not that powerful compares to your X570. Pair the 3300X with RX 5600 XT for serious gaming improvement. The 5600 XT is a bit ahead of RTX 2060 while cheaper as well, now that's bang for bucks. So how about this https://au.pcpartpicker.com/list/WFKCPn assuming you'd reuse your case/ssd/hdd etc.

Based on all the online reviews none of Intel 10 series seem worth it at the moment. Based on the following:

          1. The platform is a dead end and will be replaced by Rocket Lake next year, which will need a new motherboard.
          2. You have to pay for expensive cooling to get decent performance vs the good stock coolers provided with the Ryzen 3600 to 3900x.
          3. You will only benefit from gaming if you are using a 2080ti and playing competitively at 1080p in games which need maximum FPS. Otherwise you will not notice the difference.
          4. On average with a 2080ti, the performance difference is only 5 to 7% vs a Ryzen CPU at 1080p.
          5. If you chose a 2080 or below, the performance difference is so negligible, that it's not worth the price difference.
          6. Once the resolution goes up to 1440p and 4k then difference is almost zero in gaming, even with a 2080ti.
          7. You pay more to support the whole Intel Eco system, where you could spend the money on a better graphics card.

if you're not concerned about the best fps and like tinkering then should check out $100 8 core xeons:

    • Oh btw. If you're planing your upgrade now, it's probably worth waiting for the B550 boards to go on sales next month.

      • B450 will now support Ryzen 4000, I think its still the price sweet spot.

        • The B550s will probably support more gen though. They are replacing B450 and has to sit below X570 so probably be priced ~$200 or less. At the very least, B450 price will start to drop, even better!

    • I have mine paired with 2080. Minor bottleneck on some games.

you can get a 9600kf for around $300

    • The old i5s before 10 series have been slaughtered by Ryzen, there is no reason to buy them.

Also getting grid of the iGPU for 40 bucks is just not worth it IME but YMMV.

      • yeah i meant to reply to the 'CPU for gaming' comment above. the 9600kf beats 3600 in gaming ? i don't see how getting rid of the iGPU is bad if you are recommending an iGPU-less ryzen

        • It only wins at gaming if you have a 2080ti and game at 1080p. Once the resolution goes up or you have a slower graphics card it makes no difference. Plenty of reviews out there on the Web indicate this.

  • I need to stay off this site. Just bought this a few days ago from the exact same listing but $30 more, what are the chances they can refund the difference?

      never

    • Don't stress the small stuff, you'll make it up on the next one…

You paid retail? Please hand in your membership badge..

  • I swear this price drop only happened a couple of hours ago

Lost I saw it was still $350

Does anywhere still have the Ryzen 5 1600AF for about $175ish ?

  • Apparently AMD are lowering prices to compete better with the new 10th gen Intel CPU's.
