650
WMFREE

*$12 TAS/VIC/WA; $13 Elsewhere
**Free membership required

This is a pearler of a deal that’s not appearing on Dan’s web site that only shows up when you login to your My Dan’s account (thanks sween64). I only noticed it by chance when I saw the Member Offer label on the shelf ticket.

The 6-pack is normally $18.49. Buy 4 and it beats the per case price of $54.99!

This is an excellent beer and is the standard by which all other Pilsners are judged.

I thought it was maximum of of 3 six packs per transaction with the member specials. I might be wrong nowadays… but I get your drift . Cheers 🍻

    • +3

It is indeed a 3 6-pack limit. But if you're a nice enough sort I've never had any problems with asking and getting them to add another onto the order to make it a carton.

  • 'The original source' of mass produced beer copied by everyone since.

    • No. It was a new method where they figured cold crashing the brew early during fermentation gave a unique crisp beer. Conditions in Czech republic were perfect for this back in the 1800's; basically the first "lager". This style of beer was popular because it's refreshing rather than weighed with flavour… Ales by comparison have been around forever.

  • +3

A Czech friend gave me this. Bloody amazing- for people who love the bitterness. Apparently it’s one of the most famous beers in the Czech republic

  • +4

Very nice brew to enjoy. One of the best. Good spotting. To think you can buy this for about ~90 (Euro Cents) for 500ml in supermarkets around Eastern Europe.

    • It’s a really good way to taste what it was like to live under the Soviet Union

      • +2

The recipe dates back to 1842, so good to see that the Soviet era managed to preserve something good.

        • +3

Oh, you misunderstand. I mean you get to taste the soiled mattresses of a Soviet gulag through every sip.

Perhaps the recipe was based on the urine of malnourished, dehydrated Slavs on a diet of vodka and potato

          • +1

@ausmechkeyboards: On behalf of Ozbargain, thank you for going the extra mile by tasting a soiled mattress to give us a first hand point of comparison.

Oh wait … I see further down you have also tasted horse shit.

Do the Mods have a special badge for that?

Thanks OP! The premium pilsner from the best (& original) pilsner producing country! The brewery tour is worth a stop if you find yourself in Pilsen, CZ.

    Small bottles but..
still work out slightly better, have been getting a few 4 x 440mL Ghost Ship pale ale's - still $11 till the end of the month.
John Boston summer ale 10x 375mL tins for $20 is good too.
    $2/tin is the price :P

    • Ghost ship pale ale was extremely disappointing. There were pirate life sours on sale for the same price I should have bought more of.

      • does the job maybe the after taste different, fairly fruity still

    • Cricketers is $11/6 pack at the moment. Get lager and summer ale though, their pale ale is a bit meh.

  • Used to love this beer about 15 years ago, might give it a try again see if my tastes are the same.

Tastes like horse shit. I have two regrets in life: one is telling a woman I didn’t love her and the other is buying a six pack of this fermented buffalo sweat. This beer is singlehandedly the reason why I hate the Czech Republic.

That said, it’s a great beer to figure out whether or not you’re really dead inside, or whether or not you’ve recovered your tastebuds after years of smoking rollies without a filter.

    • +8

Lol, not that I agree with you on this beer, but plus 1 for the write-out.

    • +1

Beauty is in the eye of the bottle holder…I don’t necessarily agree with what you wrote but it sure was an entertaining read! Everyone has different tastes, and it seems pretty obvious this one’s not for you. I’m curious: what do you like? What’s a top drop in your opinion?

      • -5

My favourite beers on would be the Stone & Wood pacific ale or Young Henry’s natural lager. lord Nelson three sheets have also been going down well lately. In the fridge right now I have cricketer’s arms summer ale (their only decent beer) as well as a couple of Molsons and a couple of peroni reds.

I lean towards pale ales and have been flirting with sours lately but with caution knowing full well I’m on the path to having a man bun and carrying a metal straw

        • +1

So no Pilsener style beers then?

          • -2

@Stewardo: Ugh I bought a six pack of four pines Hefeweizen/wheat beer and that’s probably the furthest I’d go in that direction.

            • +1

@ausmechkeyboards: Hefe isn't even close to the same ballpark as a pils. One is an ale and the other is a lager - so YH natural is about as close to a pilsner as you can get without being one.

        • Plus one for three sheets Chazzozz

        • +2

+1 to the Stone & Wood Pacific Ale. I use a grain bill of pale malt & wheat for making my own that’s based on a clone of it, but also lends itself very well to messing about with different hops. I tend to lean towards crisp, refreshing beers with a bitey hop so Urquell is right up my alley. I like a good pale ale at times, but I do tend to steer away from sours other similar styles.

          • +2

@Chazzozz: It’s funny how competitive beer tastes are, if it isn’t the style of beer I like or I’m familiar with it must be horse/cat piss etc, even if it’s exported globally and enjoyed by millions. Same could be said about Oettinger Pilsener, biggest seller by volume in beer loving Germany. But mention it on Ozbargain and lookout.

      • Agree, not a fan of the pilsners, the original Tooheys were good, these are probably donkey's piss anyway.
Have to not automatically buy everything on OZB :P

    • -1

Totally agree. Loved this beer 15 years ago, but now wouldn't drink it for free. I regret buying a single bottle 3 months ago. Went down the drain nicely. Rubbish.

    • +3

Beer snobbery is the height of boring, blowhard tryhard-ness. And while I do hate you, I loved this comment.

    • that said, it’s a great beer to figure out whether or not you’re really dead inside, or whether or not you’ve recovered your tastebuds after years of smoking rollies without a filter.

Sounds like your tastebuds are still in withdrawal mode.

      Czech here.
You're absolutely right. Not only is Pilsner Urquell the most bitter tasting beer in Czechia, but also due to the Czech tradition where you want to hang out, have fun, drink some nice tasting and refreshing beer while getting slowly hammered, Pilsner would not be on your choice list.

Not only is Pilsner Urquell not refreshing and super bitter, it's way too strong in terms of contents of alcohol to be enjoyed throughout the night.
Brands that I would mention that are by far the best beer brands I had and enjoyed are Svijany beer and Gambrinus beer (the most common brand).
Heck, even the watered down beer brands like Kozel or even Zlatopramen beer is way drinkable than Urquell.

I remember smashing these for 1 euro in prague

    • +1

Ah yes, the good old 70s

      • +2

Wow. Czechs used euros in the 70s?

        • +2

Czech still use the koruna. It was about 1 euro when converted in 2016

          • @mrjames: Can still buy pints in Prague for $1.50 AUD

            • @Stewardo: Indeed, and apart from some overseas yobs (mostly UK), drinking beer seems quite civil in Prague.

              • +2

@Redmarz: Yeah if you get away from the tourist centre the beer gets cheaper, the working class beer pubs with the communal seating and grumpy drunk servers are great fun. Also enjoy Kozel beer and a warm Becherovka.

          • @mrjames: Don't tell Trump fans. There's already an epidemic of pandemic conspiracy theories.

The old Steve Urkel. Top drop.

  • $13 a pack for me (QLD)

  • I think I would take this over a pale ale or IPA any day.

  • How does this compare to Budvar?
