  • Thanks! Was deliberating between the Xiaomi Mi Band 4 and the Galaxy Fit but at this price, jumped on the Samsung.

    • Only 2 Reviews on JB Hi-Fi. One suggest not accurate. Thinking between Xiaomi and Fit as well.

I don't know that I'd trust a review by a person who considers a heart rate app on their phone is an accurate measure to compare this band with.

androidauthority review suggests HR is not that accurate in exercise. Otherwise good for a basic band.

A review said it is very slow to fully charge @ 2:45hr!
Reviews say Xiaomi Mi Band 4 takes 45min.

I bought mainly for better sleep tracking than current basic Fitbit.

        • +1

Mi Band 4 is better in every aspect, I have one atm.

Only issue id say is the Mi Fit app isnt as good as Samsung Fit, so when I was purchasing my mi band for $31, i would have gone for the Samsung Fit just because I like the ecosystem.

          • @thriftysach: That's what the reviews say. Will consider down the track.

Unlike most people, I mainly want this to monitor sleep states - which seems better in Samsung app.

Have been using basic (free) Fitbit Flex & Flex2 for 4 years - which have no HR. Just shows length of sleep & waking times etc. HR can be useful in determining sleep states.

            • @INFIDEL: Mi Band is ok at sleep tracking, its not 100% accurate and for some reason, doesn't track sleep at all if you first fall asleep after 5:30am or something, which I find a bit annoying.

Also, MI Fit App UI feels a bit too cheap and unfurnished.

              • +1

@thriftysach: Each have their strengths & a few weaknesses.

I started years ago with a Mi Band 1S! The module fell out & a bird flew away with it…

Very basic Fitbit Flex correctly recorded I went back to sleep at 5:32am (after 3 hours awake during night catching up on Tax matters) & slept in😉 Sleep tracking is very accurate, but limited as far as states of sleep.

Have a HR band called mioSlice - gives only total hours slept, but uses a Personal Activity Index of exercise. Good for encouraging exercise, but poor for sleep data. Poor battery life, but may improve if I bothered to change settings. (Was free in a university exercise study last year.)

              • +1

@thriftysach: to be fair I have a Garmin that cost what about 8 mi bands would cost and the sleep tracking is shit.

Fitbits do a much better job on that end.

            • +1

@INFIDEL: I bought a Mi Band 3 and use it with Sleep (as Android). Works great.

              • @Imitation: Good idea. Have used Sleep as Android app over years - but never had a band that paired.

Mi Band seems well integrated. Hopefully will work with this Samsung.
First tried & failed with Mi Band 1s😉 Fitbits are still listed as experimental!

                • @INFIDEL: Yeah you need an app to be able to pair with Sleep. I am using Mi Band Tools but there's another one as well.

        • First night of sleep stats - very happy with reporting in Samsung Health, except how it presents sleep time.

Had only used Fitbit Flex & Flex2 for years - recording basic sleep length, awake / restless /asleep stages, etc.

Comparing Fitbit Flex & Samsung - times were very similar, which is good. Have verified Fitbit time with actual sleep times.

Overall sleep length is reported differently. Fitbit reports total time asleep, whereas Samsung reports sleep time (on band & first in sleep stats in app) including time awake during night. So need to view "actual sleep time" in app for better estimate.

As I was awake for over 1 hour during night (shown in both apps), the sleep time shown on the band display was over 1 hour longer than actually slept.

The implication for that is - graphs of sleep times over time will be over-estimated by Samsung app - based only on time went to sleep & woke, whereas Fitbit graphs show actual time slept during that time!

Stages of sleep are nicely shown in graph, plus percentages against normal levels. Helpful stats for me.

As has been shown in my overnight sleep studies over last 10 years - my REM & Deep stages are low compared to normal range.

I have a severe sleep problem. Saw a sleep specialist for years at a sleep clinic, & tried different approaches but sleep quality deteriorated - especially with CPAP which was useless in my case. Just started with a new Dr to examine this problem.

Hopefully this small investment will guide me to improve my sleep! Can experiment with different sleep hygiene strategies to get better nights sleep - and compare with the stats.

Honor Band 5 is also a consideration if you want to look into that and don't mind Huawei.

For me, I prefer the Samsung Fit app and the supposedly better sleep tracking.

        • I have an Honor Band 5. Got it two weeks ago. So far so good. The sleep tracking is interesting, and the Samsung description sounds very much like what the Hauwei health is showing. 4 different sleep phases, plus it gives advice on sleep and I get scores each day for overall sleep quality, deep sleep, deep sleep continuity, breathing quality, and # of times awake. Seems pretty good.

Steps tracking isn't perfect, and doesn't sound like it is with the Samsung one. It's just too easy to fake these bands into additional steps, or not counting some steps if there's minimal arm movement. I always use it as an outdoor walk when I go outside, which uses the GPS on my phone and connects via Huawei Health. I trust the GPS a lot more than the steps, so this should be a standard thing for any wrist-band tracker.

I debated the Mi Band 4 vs the Honor Band 5. It was the vast reviews saying the sleep tracking is better on the Honor Band which made my decision. If that isn't important to you, then I don't think the Samsung would be better than the Mi Band 4.

          • @bk1973: The price difference is only $15 and I get a much more refined app+option for an always on display+a 2 year warranty in Australia so I figure that's more worthwhile to me.

          • @bk1973: Sorry this is a bit late but how's the Huawei Health app if you don't mind me asking. I'm considering getting an Honor Band 5 but the reviews recently have been saying the app doesn't work through Google Play/ Apple Store and you need to download it externally through Huawei?

      • I've used a mi band 3 before and they do an OK job but they're pretty damn limited in the information they show. If you just want a step and HR counter you're OK but for anything more you're going to be looking at additional applications like notify and fitness which while extensive is a bit fiddly to setup.

Calorie count is pretty misleading for all activities, show's your expenditure in the form of 'total calories consumed during an activity' inclusive of your TDEE.

Can't comment on the Samsung. I now use a Garmin which gives some better metrics but nothing groundbreaking. Kinda can tell the difference between activity calories by looking at 'active calories' but it still could be better. I'm a bit of a data / fitness nerd though so most people might not care.

  • Combine this with Westpac credit card offer, save another $10

  • thanks just got one for each of the family :) hopefully pick up later today.

doubt they will last long at this price, looks like many stores already sold out. dosnt look like officeworks stock them was thinking a price match would be cool and closer.

    • got ours on charge now.

  • Thanks👍 Bought.
Bonus - remembered had a $20 egift card from an old Groupon Deal. So why not!
Upgrading from free Fitbit Flex from UTAS Deal 4 years ago.

Battery life Up to 6 days

Whenever I see these bands I just look at my mi band 4 which only needs to charge once a month and just feel underwhelmed by all other batteries.

This does look interesting though but always makes it hard to make the jump.

    • I have to charge my vivoactive 3 every 5 days or so, definitely miss the battery life on the mi band 3. One of the better things I found about that watch.

That said, the always on display is nice.

      • +1

        Amazfit Bip

Over a month of battery life, always on display, GPS, all the usual fitness bits, etc.

        • Eh, they look OK but don't they also use the same app as the mi band 3 / 4? Mi Fit. Used to have one and really wasn't a fan of it, Garmin connect is a lot more polished.

Would love the battery life though.

          • @knk: Multiple options on the app front, plus connection through to the usual suspects for fitness.

Recharging becomes not an issue. When it alerts you that you only have 10% battery left, that's still about 4 days of use.

            • @sane: Yeah but the same average unpolished apps as the mi bands yeah.

So mi band tools or notify and fitness?

  • Didn't need, grabbed 2. Thanks OP

  • Samsung Galaxy Fit Activity Tracker looks good!

  • +1

Anyone can give some feedback in regards to the Galaxy one please ?

    • Love mine and would recommend especially at this price however some may not be aware of the following;

      1. Does not do gps tracking even when paired with phone - only if you start the exercise from your phone.
      2. Battery life of 4-6 days is assuming the default of measuring heart rate every 10 minutes (you can still set it to always measuring though).
      3. Can't listen to music just off the band if you want to leave your phone behind (don't think other bands do this anyway - only smart watches).

Everything else is great though :)

      • +1

Is the sleep monitor function correctly ?

        • +1

Yes it works well, however only with the Samsung Health App. No integration with Sleep as Android (or other sleep tracking apps) as that's locked down by Samsung for this band last I checked.

      • Thanks. About to pick up mine.

Infrequent HR measurement may explain why there are comments about it being inaccurate in reviews. Just an issue of not setting up correctly.

  • Maybe my googling skills need some work but does anyone know if the Galaxy Fit will be any good for casual bike riding tracking (given that it doesn't have a built in GPS)?

    • I think if you take your phone with you and can sync this to Strava (or if the Samsung app can use your phone's GPS) it will do a perfectly fine job.

That said the HR value from a wrist sensor while bike riding is going to be trash. It'll be similar to weightlifting where contractions in your forearm cause inaccurate readings. It'd be OK-ish for running.

  • What's the battery life like on the galaxy?

    • I've had mine for almost a year now, it's about 4-6 days (depending on your set brightness, how often you check etc.).

  • Can see some videos on youtube, anyone got experience with the Galaxy Fit with an iPhone, looking to get one for my mum but shes a iPhone user.

The other thing is, do you need your phone with you all the time to track the steps? Or once back can sync with bluetooth I assume?

    • +1

Can't comment on iPhone sorry (in theory it should work fine though). Yep, it will sync back steps and other data with your phone whenever you reconnect. Keep in mind it doesn't do gps tracking at all, even when connected with your phone (unless you launch an exercise manually from your phone).

I bought one (not on sale) in late 2019 for $84 at JB HI FI.

It's a great band, good for the price (altho not as cheap as the Mi Band 4). Realistic battery life is about 4-5 days. However if you do a lot workout tracking and having the display on more often expect 2-3 days max.

  • What's the heart rate accuracy/drop outs like ? My Gear S2 is flaky at measuring heart rate.

  • I'm still saving my pennies until a decent fitness band/activity tracker is actually released. There doesn't seem to be a model yet that is highly accurate in both heart rate, sleep monitoring and step counting.

  • This or wait for mii band 5? Missus wants a fitness band.

    • Haha was thinking the same. Got announced though with everything going on might be delayed?

Get both? 😎 Then give old one to family member?

  • +1

Jbhifi web site sucks. It doesn't let me proceed to payment even though the item is in stock and all details provided. No errors, button click just doesn't respond and do nothing.

    • I have the same issues.
Tried with multiple different browsers too.

    • Just tried - working fine for me on Android phone.

      • Interesting, a friend of mine has tried on mobile and it has worked too but not on the computers.

        • It happens with a few sales systems - often working better on a mobile. And experience may differ by browser.

First noticed this when booking Jetstar flights years ago - quick & easy on mobile, while others complained they couldn't get through on computer.

  • First night of sleep stats - very happy with reporting in Samsung Health, except how it presents sleep time on band & in graphs over time - the reason I bought this.
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/8784724/redir

    • Sleep stats are so inaccurate!!
It added 1.5 + 2.5 hours of sleep today while I was watching movies - wide awake!! It reported REM & light sleep both times.

As I only bought it for sleep measurements - it's totally useless for me.

      Disappointing!

      • It depends on what you were watching.

        • Are you saying Rapid Eye Movement sleep (dream) state may be due to the movie :-)

In that sleep state you can't move your muscles!

          No it's faulty.
          Will contact support.

          • @INFIDEL: It depends on how boring the movie is.

            • @Anonymous User: Movies weren't boring, otherwise I might have got up & done something else - which it might have noticed.

      • +1

Reports of Samsung having problems with inaccurate sleep tracking!

it often reports far longer periods of time, as it mistakes my early nighttime period of restlessness as “light sleep.”
        https://9to5google.com/2019/08/03/galaxy-fit-review-samsungs…

It could be fooled by us lying in bed on the weekend and reading our social media feed for half an hour or so
        https://www.techadvisor.co.uk/review/activity-trackers/samsu…

Also an issue with Galaxy Watch
It records that I'm sleeping even I'm just resting and awake, it records more sleeping time and hours.

      • This is a serious problem with this unit.

It can't distinguish between 1 handed typing (using hand without band), reading, watching a movie, or actually sleeping! Pretty useless.

I've never had this problem with Fitbits - used for 4 years.

I slept 8 hours (recorded on both this Fit - shown in actual sleep & Fitbit) but this Fit shows over 13 hours slept since last night.

5 extra hours in 1 day is a huge error.

Reported in a review (above) that reading social media also is recorded as sleeping 😴
Seems a common problem with some Samsung wearables.

      • [UPDATE] Problem (of incorrect recording of fictitious "naps") Solved!

There is a setting for your level of activity from Sedentary to …
        Set level to Sedentary.
That stopped hourly alarm to get active & the false recording of "naps".

As for where to find that setting… Good luck!
Wanted to change it. Searching online didn't help.

Unfortunately with settings across 2 apps, in different places - I stumbled across it but haven't found it since. That's poor design, Samsung!

        • There are at least 2 ways to set up your level of activity. This wasn't the way I set it up…

          Go into Samsung Health app.
          Under Menu - Profile
Select level from 1 (sedentary) to 4 (very active).

If set too high, sets off notice of inactivity & records a nap when you are reading etc!

Incorrectly recorded naps can be deleted in Sleep data.

      • +1

Sleep recording times are very INACCURATE!

Sleep length includes time awake during night!

Sleep time recorded includes time doing other things in bed before sleeping! (No, I was reading!)
        Has been discussed online.

        Night #2:
(setting changed to lowest activity level: Sedentary)
        in bed 10:30
        went to sleep 12:05
        got up at 7.

        Fitbit recorded: 12:06 - 6:57
Sleep time: 6:40 (includes time awake during night)
        That's spot on.

        This Galaxy Fit recorded: 10:31 - 6:59
        Sleep time: 8:28 22% overestimate!!
"actual sleep time": 7:41 15% overestimate!!
It added 88 minutes of non sleep as sleep. (That is what is presented in graph for daily Trends - so useless!)
& 61min to "actual sleep time"!!

        Highly inaccurate!!

  • A general question with Smart watches. When do you recharge them. I have a Fossil and need recharging every day. I recharge it when I sleep, which means it can't track my sleep.

  • I think it's expired, showing $119 now

    • Reported - now EXPIRED.

  • USELESS!!

Has twice failed to show display when button pressed & has reset settings.

Stopped recording steps & sleep yesterday. It was well charged.

Despite walking kms yesterday, it showed 0 Steps @6pm yesterday, but showed 56 min walking (4.52km) in Active Time during that time with graph of activity!

It did automatically sync other data with Samsung Health & connected with Galaxy Wearables.
But clicking SYNC NOW in Samsung Health doesn't work - shows last sync just before 7am yesterday morning, despite automatic sync of all data now.

Right on 7pm yesterday it started measuring steps again. A total of 150m walked (201 Steps) in the day! Recorded Sleep last night, but not the night before (0hr).

Along with inaccurate sleep data (includes time awake in bed), recording naps while watching movie or reading, recording REM sleep while awake, it's just not worth keeping.

Looks nice. Tried hard to like it.
But useless for tracking data reliably or accurately!!

I've used a basic Fitbit for years & never had any issues except for broken band after 3 years use.

    Returning to JB.

    • Refunded!
Showed staff band has been recording up to 14 hours sleep a day, while old Fitbit recorded under 7 - which was actual time slept.

For just sleep recording (my requirement), staff recommended the Withings Sleep Mat on sale @Amazon & JB for $134.

Small pad slips under mattress for:
      Sleep quality assessment
      Snoring detection
      Heart rate tracking
      Sleep coaching program
      Sleep Apnea Detection
      Health report for Dr
      IFTTT integration

      Considering purchase.

      • Correction:
        Amazon question
Q:Is this the newer “Sleep Analyzer” or the old “Sleep” device version?
        A: Old
JB & Amazon have the old version discounted. Link to Withings site above is to new version, with better data & reporting.
