Apple Watch and iPhone

Need to organise a couple of things:

iPhone for my wife - not keen on the SE but happy with an XR/XS or 11

Apple watch for the old man - Doesn't need cellular but needs the bigger screen as he's old :/

Saw the deal on the XS for $1149 but thought at that price my wife might prefer an 11. But happy to hear thoughts and bargains!

Happy for the phone to be on a plan too. 12 month perferable but no more than 24mth

Have you tried searching for them on ozbargain first? Or are you just expecting everyone else to do that for you?

Does the old man have experience with the apple watch and an existing iphone?

    • He has an iPhone 11

  • I assume you realise that the apple watch has a smaller screen than a phone; if diminished eyesight is a problem, I don't think an apple watch is the solution.

    • Absolutely. Hence why I’ve been looking at the 42 series 3 or 44 series 5

  • Harvey Norman have a 24 month plan with Optus. $65 a month with 80gb data and unlimited calls and text plus a $700 gift card for Harvey Norman.

    • This could be a goer for the phone! Can you port from catch connect (optus) to harveys though?

      • Ahh I’m not too sure. I know it’s for new customers but just give them a call to find out

        • Perfect - thanks for that.

Now just need a watch !

I’ve got an iPhone XS which I bought for under $1000 at JB. It might be worth contacting some stores to find out price and availability but it is late in the day now. I bought it so I could get an Apple Watch; I got the Apple 5 44mm because I might be a little lady but, dammit, I wanted the screen realestate. The man went for an iPhone 7 and the Apple Watch 3, 42mm because, frankly, he is the rational one.

Apart from telling the time, and date, we use the watch as:
    - exercise monitoring. The bloody things rule our lives. If we don’t get the 30 minutes of exercise, movement allocation and 12 standups a day we will lose our streak.
    - you can answer calls from your wrist, just like Dick Tracey. You need your phone within range or a SIM in the watch. We went for the phone pair option and it has been fine.
    - there are a number of apps like weather, SMS, messaging, email, calculator, calendar, Control music, etc that can be quite useful.
    - there is even a neat app where you can, remotely, see the camera view on your phone and take pictures. Good for taking pictures over the heads of crowds or “selfies”.

The bigger screen is nice, but if your glasses are good enough the 42mm is probably OK. Just be aware not only is the screen smaller but there is also a border on the 42mm
    - the other thing to keep in mind is the later models will be OS Upgrade compatible for longer.
    - the Apple Watch 5 also has the fall indicator in case that is a consideration for your father.

Since I got my watch the phone is barely out of the bag. Mainly for synching my exercise stats to my Qantas app, taking photos and acting as a hot spot. Then again I’ve also got an iPad 11” Pro which is what I use the most.

There are websites that discuss the iPhone 11 vs iPhone XS. I’m happy with my XS. I would avoid the SE because the button reduces the screen real estate.

It might be worth getting the phones/watches from Apple, or Costco, because if you don’t like them you can return them for a full refund.

Hope this helps. If you want further info give me a yell.

    • Perfect! This is excellent info thanks for that.

      • No probs, it always helps if people have actually used the product they are commenting on. We got the watches, basically, on a whim but they have proven surprisingly useful. The trap is you need a latest version iOS phone to set up the watch and you need the phone if you want to mod the watch faces, etc. The ability to answer the phone, on the wrist, is great. No more charging around the house trying to find the damn phone only for it to stop ringing just as you go to answer it. Find a good site that compares the watches, there are some differences that might lead you one way or the other. Best of luck with the hunt.

My wife got an iPhone Xs Max 64GB (paid $446, new) + Telstra 60GB $65/month plan from The Good Guys in SA with 12 month contract. iPhone Xs Max is older and slower than an iPhone 11, but it's still pretty good? Maybe give your local store a call and see whether the promotion is still available? All up for $1226 is pretty good!

In the end I decided to go iPhone 11 due to the A13 chipset and nightmode for photos.

      Xs was tempting though…
