Portable HDD Recommendations

Hi guys

Looking for recommendations for portable HDD 2GB USB 3.0. Are there any particular brands or models I should be avoiding?

Looking to purchase before the EOFY.

Thanks

  • I presume you mean 2TB. There aren't any specific models to avoid. Seagate are generally cheaper and will be perfectly fine. WD are slightly pricier in general but some prefer them. For occasional storage use, there'll be no real difference. Just make sure they're USB3 and don't need external power (i.e. 2.5 inch).

You can buy the Iomega 31191 Jaz 2 GB External Hard Drive but it is a SCSI device.

    • Sorry I derped out HAHAH

DON'T buy WD portable drives. The USB port is directly integrated into the drive motherboard which means any damaged port is throwing away your data. By comparision, the Seagates have a SATA to USB adapter inside the case which is easy to swap out if/when your child drops the drive on the cable while it's still plugged in…

This Seagate is my go-to for value for money at $33 per Tb. 2Tb drives are not much cheaper.

    • The exact reason why I got a Seagate one to backup my WD drive

    • Bing Lee on eBay have the 4TB for $128 shipped, there's an AfterPay code to knock $10 off.

Not $99 like the good old days, but eh.

      • Do you have a link to that?

          • @D C: Unfortunately, that's a desktop drive and i need a portable one. Thanks anyway.

            • @TheFBIGuy: Ah right you are.

Well, the 3TB @ Officeworks for $99 that Switchblade88 linked to is probably about as good as you'll get, actually cheaper than the 2TB version.

They're the 2.5" (laptop) drive version.

  • can get a portable ssd if speed is important.
